Coolerguys 120x25mm Rear Exhaust Blower Fan 5 Volt with USB Connector

Coolerguys 120x25mm Rear Exhaust Blower Fan 5 Volt with USB ConnectorI was looking for something relatively cheap to help cool some of my home theater components to make sure they didn't overheat in my TV stand. I tried a couple of laptop chillers but they were totally inadequate.

I found these exhaust fans and as soon as I installed the first two I realized I had found exactly what I was looking for.

They are "almost" perfect. With a couple of tweaks though they are outstanding. The two items I modified on them were, the feet and the cord. Instead of the included stick on feet, I used some 2mm drawer liner cut into small squares and super-glued it to the bottom. The included feet keep the fan about 5mm off the top of the chassis of the receiver. This is not bad but I thought perhaps having the fan just a little closer would increase it's ability to pull hot air out of the receiver.

The second item was the cord. It's pretty short. I used some AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable (3.3 Feet/1.0 Meter) cables to extend out to a small powered USB hub which is ideal. There's a little more cable to manage but it's almost all tucked away behind the TV stand. This allows a lot more flexibility in the placement of the fan.

Noise: I have six of these installed over several components and I can only hear them when I actually walk past the TV stand. It's about as noticeable as a standard PC. I used to have a HTPC in there with mostly passive cooling and this is about the same noise. They're 120mm fans so they don't make that much noise.

Performance: They work. I don't have any thermal measurements to tell you how well. But the temperature difference is definitely noticeable. I have two of them on my receiver, two on a zone 2 amp, and one each on my cable box and zone 3 amp. Prior to installing them I was a bit worried about the receiver and zone 2 amp overheating in the TV stand. Afterwards I can feel the difference when I place my hand on the top of the units. Plus the exhaust pushes the heat out and away from the components instead of it heading straight upwards.

So if you're looking for a cooling solution for your home theater components, look no further (with a couple of modifications that is). I still don't think that it's fair to deduct a star from the rating due to my tweaks. Others may find that the included feet and the standard cable are perfectly fine for their situation.

I've had this on 24/7 for over 4 months now and have not had any issues. I use it to cool an Apple Time Capsule router in my room since it runs too hot for me. It has good airflow and couldn't be any simpler to set up. The noise is somewhat loud when you listen for it, equivalent to an Xbox 360 slim. I sleep with it about 10ft from my head and it doesn't bother me during the night or trying to fall asleep, so it's not terribly loud.

This little gizmo is pretty cool. (pun intended.) It is well made and is pretty quiet. I especially like that it runs off the USB port on the back of DirecTV boxes and AV receivers. You will spend a bit if you need several of these, but they seem well made and ready to last a long time. Another really cool feature is that the USB plug has a throughput female USB connector. So, one USB source can be daisy-chained a few times.

This is a very quiet, high flow, usb powered fan, with many uses, with 4 stick on rubber pads. I have an in wall cabinet, with a framed glass door, to hold my media components. Though the back of the cabinet is open, with only a black mesh curtain a foot behind, heat remains trapped around the power amp. This fan was small enough where it can lay on top of the amp, and blow air horizontally, out the back of the cabinet. The fan has greatly reduced the heat within the cabinet, by probably 75% (estimate only). Since the fan is usb powered, it is powered by the amplifier, and turns on and off with the amp. Though the fan is not the best looking, it is black, and therefor, nearly invisible in a dark cabinet on top of a black amplifier. Though I assumed I would need 2 or 3 of these, I wanted to test the waters by purchasing just one. I have since found that one is enough to cool the space. I an imagine many uses for a fan like this, but I can guarantee it's usefulness in a media cabinet.
