Duracell High Speed 8 GB 600X USB 2.0 Compact Flash Card Card UDMA DU-CF6008G-C

Duracell High Speed 8 GB 600X USB 2.0 Compact Flash Card Card UDMA DU-CF6008G-CI purchased two of these cards to use in a dual CF to SATA adapter setup as a RAID-0 (striping) drive. It was intended to be the boot disk for a headless unattended Linux file server and the goal was to have a small but FAST boot disk.

The cards worked with the SATA adapter, but I wasn't getting the speed I was expecting. I have many other CF cards in UDMA / 300X rating and I know how fast they are. I expected this new RAID-0 drive to be at least 4 times faster (600X vs. 300X and striped vs single drive).

Well, I think a floppy drive (remember those?) is faster. My first thought was that the CF to SATA adapter was causing the slowdown. So I tested these cards in Linux using HDPARM and also compared them to my other CF cards.

I was surprised to find that these new "600X" cards were actually performing at around 250 to 266X speed! I have a 32GB Transcend UDMA 600X CF card in my DSLR and this card tested very close to 600X speed, so I know my test results were valid.

So... maybe I had a bad one? No. Both of them tested virtually the same. S-L-O-W.

I guess I should have known that the price these were selling for was a bit low for a 600X card. Now I know why.

If you want a nice, generic compact flash card for your digital camera or whatever these will do nicely. If you expect 600X speed, look elsewhere because the Duracell "High Speed" 8 GB Compact Flash cards are not really all that "high speed".

I Saw a few good reviews for this card so thought I would give them a try. I am very glad I did. I use them in my Olympus E-5 and whether taking bursts of RAW shots or shooting HD video, the cards are fast and reliable. They also download to my PC in a fraction of the time my old 8gb 133x cards did. Awesome value on a very fast card.

Perhaps like many, as a professional photographer, I'm searching for faster, but cheaper CF cards. (I own a Canon 1Ds Mark III and Canon 1D x.) I have found with many of the cards, such as the Duracell, that their performance isn't really as stated. It says 600X. It isn't. And if it's close, it's in read only. Write speed is no better than a 300X, if that. Read speed, in a USB 3.0 card reader may be closer to 400-500X. If you want a reasonably priced larger card and don't care as much about peak performance, than this may be for you. For me, I'm already looking for something else to replace it's mediocre performance.

I bought this card because the capacity was good for the price, and speed typically isn't a big concern for us. In my wife's Rebel T2i, just about the most common DSLR on earth, this card worked OK for about a month before it started corrupting files. Eventually any kind of burst shooting or even single shots in quick succession led to corrupted files, and error messages from the camera saying the card was faulty. After some confusing back-and-forth emails with an overseas customer service agent, Duracell did send a replacement I had to ship the faulty one back at my expense, and the process took about a month. Now we have a new card that we don't trust at all. I guess you get what you pay for.
