I had each player for around 2 weeks, starting in late December. The first player could not be used out of the box immediately. I had to update its firmware, which I found was impossible to do on my Mac, since the only updater found online for it is an .exe . After updating it on my bf's computer, it was smooth sailing until a week later when the screen died out on me while I was walking to work. (My theory is that it was caused by the static electricity in the wintry air, and the fact that the outer casing is metal.) The player still worked, the only problem was that I could not see what I was navigating through.
I returned that one in hopes that it was just a fluke.
My second player was more hopeful in the way that I did not have to update it to get it to work. However, it too died out about 2 weeks later as I was using it outdoors. I could not even reboot it.
One other nuisance that I discovered that I did not pick up from reading the description online is that the headphone jack on the player itself is not the standard size, so you cannot use your own headphones unless you plug in the extra accessory that comes with the package. This adds for more wires to mess around with, which became a nuisance after a while.Being a fan of swiss army products and mp3 gadgets I wanted to check this one out. I buy most of my items here at amazon but this one was an exception.
I bought this at a shop near my home(in Chicago) for 215$. I dont know why amazon is selling it for 259$ !!! The mp3 player works fine ... fell down a couple of times ...still works fine ... the battery charge retaining time could be better ... jus comes for 7 to 8 hours.
The FM Radio option is a kewl option ... goes one up against ipods and other mp3 players ... The multiple file format support feature comes handy.
The knife and scissors are of standard swiss army quality but just a couple of them makes one feel handicapped after using the regular swiss army knife.
Could be a nice 'techy' gift to someone you like.

Well i have had mine, a 2 g, for about 4 years-no problems, no issues-battery seems to need more frequent charging as it does not seem to last and hold a charge as when new. Batteries do have a limit to recharging, and this one must be tiny!what i like..its beautiful and feels and looks like a high quality product, compact, a rahter unique size knife as SAKs go, 74mm, has a useable knife, scissors and nail file, mp 3 unit can be entirely removed from knife shell, which makes it feather light; i like the back light-which is adjustable in duration as well as brightness, the single 4 direction toggle press on/off-i love the ear buds-great sound, comfortable and stay in my ear better than most, and the only ones i have which dont get tangled due to the design of the sliding retaining rings (there are rings that hold the ear bud wires close to the necklace when no in use-quite clever design imho-sound is very good, fun to use in low light, has fm radio which was a big point for me
what i dont like as much...menu, not too bad but you have to get the timing and number of presses right , and the 'on the fly recording'-say like capturing a radio show-is a bit of a pain -and perhaps im inept, but i still sometimes inadvertantly go into this when all i want to do is switch from radio to tunes-but its not often nor a big problem at all, AND as another reviewer noted, the micro input on the body only fits the supplied ear buds, its too small for standard mini plug and ear buds, headphones, and you MUST use the external volume/toggle swiss army clip on 'badge' to use a standard mini pin plug-not a big deal-unless of course you lose it or break it (went to radio shack to try to get a converter plug and wasnt able to find one-but they may be out there)
-and actually great for skiing and keeping the little brute tucked insde a pocket; in bright sun the screen is hard if not impossible to read, despite its variable brightness; fm radio is ok-i live in a radio shaodw, and sometime i must hld the unit in order to use my body as an antenna , and simply putting it in my pocket on on the belt will result in weak reception-(it is the radio that made me want this more than any other feature
i find it sturdy, reliable, and ....fun becuase it does so much with so little in the way of buttons-and, you can say my swiss army knife has a radio aand tunes!! In its own way, it it a thing of beauty, clearly engineered as it sound good, is easy to use and carry, and is nicely finished-it it the only 'stick' storage ive ever seen with a fully lighted sceen (it has pale blue lighted letters against a black screen-)
however, i paid $59.00 new for mine-(2g) , ($39.00 for my 1g version) and i thought that was a lot given what the original apple shuffle sold for
now this is really a dinosaur in terms of storage, but its still fun. i love being ale to have something not much larger than a pocket knife that i can use , or not, to isten to tunes in a quiet moment or unexpected wait
in all honesty its more of a fun toy/gadget -but as i am a swiss army knife enthusiast, it has value, and you dont see all that many of them which also makes it fun. at current prices there are clearly far superior offerings, and you can simly carry a small swiss army knife separately along with your tune player, both of which will be far superior and more practical. Never the less, i like mine a great deal and use it almost as much as my new shuffle. Its great for running and using the mp3 , as not only is the toggle easy to switch songs but also volume-and this is the same using other ear phones or the like with the control badge i described above.
