LG UH12LS28K LightScribe 12x SATA Blu-Ray Combo Internal Drive, Bulk (Black)

I bought this from another online retailer back on 7/9/2011 (for $12 less I might add). In short, it exceeded every expectation I had for it. It is the fastest reader I have (and I own 6, including Plextor, LiteOn, etc). It will read discs perfectly that other readers just give error after error trying to read. As a burner, it is certainly at the top of the speed list as well. Just one caveat: This is a great DVD & Blu-Ray READER but will ONLY BURN DVD's (not Blu-Ray's)!

This drive has AACS, an added level of copy protection that makes it inconvenient, unusable in some configurations where it can't get a digital handshake.

The copy software makers have already broken this encryption, so it doesn't stop them from making illegal copies, but it might stop you from being able to play DVD's.

Likely the people who say it doesn't play DVD's are trying to play through VGA or some other analog format or have an older video card that has compatibility issues.

I was under the impression this bulk drive would not include the player s/w but it did! It's definintely faster than my other 1 year dvd drive when I did the windows 7 install twice using the new and old drives.

I has a groove design to the front panel, slightly glossy finish. Different from the regular ones with matt finish and flat surface.

If you're considering this drive to play Blurays on your PC or HTPC, STOP. I picked this drive because it came bundled with bluray player software. However, the included software, PowerDVD 9 is JUNK. It will not play any bluray produced after 2010, even with updates, unless you pay an extra $80 to upgrade to Power DVD 12.

Read reviews on the Power DVD software. This is a continual cycle that the software maker profits from. Every year they come out with a new version and require you to 'upgrade' to keep playing the latest blurays.

Save yourself some time and money and just pay the extra $$ for a stand alone bluray player now. It's the only option until microsoft sorts out the legal issues of playing blurays in media center.

If you are planning on using this drive to "rip" BDs then be prepared to have to reflash the firmware with a custom BIN to turn off the RipLock on the drive. Before I was getting 2.4x rips and now I get 8x+. So far it has been reliable at reading all of my BD discs I have thrown at it. Even a couple that gives my Asus drive fits.
