I'd been a Sonar/cakewalk user for about 8 years now. when I last updated to Sonar X1, I was so displeased with the stability and overall "unpolishedness" of everything... So I started researching other DAWs and found Cubase 6. I was so impressed with its new features I went ahead and bought it without even trying it, could've been a ridiculously stupid thing to do, but in a day, I was already fluent with it. It does everything Sonar does even better, Cubase looks and feels more polished, it offers deeper customization and control over your audio at your finger tips.

The only thing I still miss about Sonar is its drum maps, other than few remaining collaborate works, I'll pretty much uninstall sonar. I'm certainly pleased with Cubase stability, no more blue screens at crucial times.

Do yourself a favor and at least try Cubase 6.

I started with Cubase SX, upgraded to Cubase 4 and recently upgraded to Cubase 6. First of all every DAW software has a steep leaning curve mostly because of the immense features. I can say that Cubase 6 is dirt cheap from the perspective of what you get. 5 years ago a drum loop library would have cost as much as just the CB software, same goes for the convolution reverb. Now its included along with a very valuable tutorial DVD. Steinberg has made a greater effort to provide assistance to the user via youtube, Cubase club and blogs provided for free. The basic functions are very easy to setup and use, but it must be noted that you will have to learn the more advance features, that are much more user friendly than before. The pitch correct, convolution reverb, variaudio (edit audio like midi files), drum loops, Halion SE ( realistic keyboard sounds ) and the Amp rack (as good as amplitube imo) are all super high quality and now included and eliminate the need for pricey plug-ins that you use to have to get, saving thousands. I can not think of any thing this software cannot do. Its a massive improvement over CB4. As far as the apple Pro Logic 9 vs Cubase 6, I had to think it over really hard. I have a MAC but its in the family room where I have no privacy for recording, on the other hand I could use CB6 on an affordable dual core laptop for just a few hundred vs a mac 17" pro laptop for a couple of thousand. I would like to use PL9 especially now that its very very reasonable, but do not regret CB6 on my dual core 17' laptop with the superb focusrite 2i2 interface all for under a grand. Overall an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up!!!

Again, I would like to separate the 2 truths about this product.

First truth: I received Cubase AI 6 with the yamaha MM6 I purchased. Installation of all of the software elements went smoothly. I like the user interface and I was up and running in minutes. Completely satisfied, I then went to register the product to get the permanent activation key. This is when it all went down hill. This package works as intended and works very well.

Second truth: They make you jump through hoops to get a permanent license for your software and customer support is behind a major firewall.

For some reason yet unknown to me, I was able to complete the registration process on the steinberg.net web site until the final step, which mentions an email to activate my login. Unfortunately for me, the email never arrived. Steinberg's website indicates to check your spam inbox. Nothing received there. The unfortunate thing is without it, I cannot log into the site to follow up and get an activation key for my software, given I put the eLicenser ID in during the registration process. Any attempt to do this again, now gets me rejected with the error that I've already registered and that the eLicenser ID is in use (I know it is, by me already).

So I think, no worries, I'll just contact Steinberg. This is when I notice that there is no phone contact for US customers. Even worse, in order to contact technical support, you must use your login you created. That's right, the login which I cannot access the site with because I never got the confirmation email. So my login shows up in the database enough for me not to be able to register again, but isn't available to the point where I can attempt to reset the password and try to complete registration.

So no login, no access to technical support, and no phone contact. I would be even angrier if I had purchased a full version of this software outright and didn't receive it as part of a bundle. I feel in this case I was purchasing a synth, so I'm not as ripped-off, I guess.

I have since used another email address to get a login so that I can open a support ticket, which has yet to be answered, and I have my doubts and am not very optimistic, because my new login cannot never be associated with the eLicenser ID of my software.

I suppose I will have a few more days before the required registration must happen and I'm no longer able to use the software again. At that point if I still haven't had any resolution, I will simply move on to another software provider as I certainly have lost trust in this company.

Again, The software works flawlessly on my system, but it will expire if I cannot get them to resolve my registration issue with their web site. Unless this gets resolved, I would suggest never to use any recording software by Steinberg until they update their support system to include issues with their website.

UPDATE 1/04/13:

I was very surprised by the swift response from the support staff. They moved quickly to resolve my issues with registration at the website. I was able to get a permanent license for the software and able to actually log in. I'm still concerned about the remote only technical support as I feel it would help not trading email responses to get issues resolved, but at least I know now that I can count on Steinberg to support their products. I'm leaving the review in place, but I will raise the number of stars.

Never buy a Steinberg Product.

At some point, my Cubase program got corrupted. What a shocker. I had to UNINSTALL their software from my Mac. I encourage you to look up how to do this. They ask you to go into your hidden Library files and start deleting files from your Audio folder. Your system won't let you do this explaining that those are required system files. Then they ask you to open up the SYSTEM TERMINAL, type some code into it, find a HIDDEN file and start deleting .bow files related to their product. Well. If you find this folder in your system terminal, as I did, you will quickly learn that there are THOUSANDS of these files. They write, "Delete all Cubase related .bow files." That's the dumbest technical advice i have EVER heard. It's clearly imperative that you don't delete sytsem files or files for other programs.

This uninstallation process is poorly written and dangerous to anyone working with a computer that they would like to continue USING.

I hate you Steinberg. I hate that I can't find your email address or phone number until I register my program that won't work. I hate that I have several licenses to your product and none of them work. I hate that after typing in my product license, I have no idea if it will work again once I'm on a computer that will actually run your OKAY product.

FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME STEINBERG. I can't F*****G contact you so feel FREE to contact me. georgealister@yahoo.com. I want you to FIX this.
