So far it's worth the money. I previously bought the Kodak Sport and -as other reviews saidit just stopped working. The picture quality is very good on it's middle setting (which gives you over 2hrs. of recording). I don't know how long the battery will last, but there was plenty of life left after 2hrs.
I like being able to connect directly to a TV or recorder with the AV cords or HDMI.
Cons:
Trying to use the included software to edit or copy to a DVD drives my computer up the wall.
The DVD copy won't play on a DVD player, so I use the AV cable.
There is no time/date stamp, although you go to the trouble of setting it.As always received the package from Amazon on time and on target. Before its arrival I had already downloaded the Owner's manual from RCA. There are more pages of warnings and copy write ink than actual step by step guides of operations. Although I will say that with the video/still camera being as simple as it is...the actual instructions are probably on the mark.
The first thing you should do is make sure that the SD card you are going to use is one of the older SD cards limited to 2 gigabytes or one of the newer SDHC cards that have the little circle with the number 4 listed on the face of the SD card. They don't tell you this in the manual or RCA's online spec sheet but if you purchase the SDHC high speed cards (they have the number 10 in a circle on the label) you'll be a potential road rage candidate on your way back to the store where you'll stand in the return rage line and speak with the customer service anti-rage sloth! Not that I experienced this personallyI have a friend that said they experienced it and ...whatever....yes I did IT!
One thing that I should note right off the bat is that the viewing screen is 1 5/8ths by 1 3/8ths inches....someone is telling a story about size! UPDATE!I was informed that while the screen is the measurment I listed above...that the actual measurement is taken diagonally with would put the screen at 2.1".
As for the camera, don't get wrapped up in the whole 1080P HD hype. If you film HD through a pinhole...as Ricky Ricardo says," you'll have some splainin to do" when you show your not so Oscar worthy videos to your family and friends.
Being as lightweight as it isit's imperative that you pay special attention to keeping your movements down to a minimum when filming otherwise you'll see your lunch again when editing your masterpieces.
The 12 mega jiga wiga pixels taken through the pinhole lens are okay..just not like your dedicated pocket camera. As for the controls...WE HAVE A WINNER.
Easy to use but very unfriendly if you have hands like mine that are big and prone to over coverage. If I had to do it again, because I just don't return stuff that I don't like and have the manufacturer take a loss because of meI live with my decisions, I would just purchase another, newer pocket camera from one of the big name manufacturers and use it for the same purpose.
Again, it works as advertised but the quality of the video and still images lends itself to being second rate. I hope that in some small way I've helped you in your decision making process. Hooah! Go Army!
Buy RCA EZ3100 High Definition Digital Camcorder with 2x Digital Zoom 2-Inch LCD Screen Black Now
We bought this for my 9 year old son who needs a digi camcorder for his digital film editing class. We didn't want him to bring our full size camcorder to school for the danger that he might lose it. We bought this at a very good price. For $40, we got a lemon on the first shipment, but AMAZON took care of it and sent a replacement right away upgrading to next day shipping, and refunding our money back instantly without any wait. The product performed as expected. High definition movie without blur even if you move fast. Zooming in and out has no blur too. It takes very good video except that it can't zoom as far as you want. It's not for taking pictures though. It has no stabilizer for still images. Your hands have to be steady and gentle when pushing the capture button, or all else is blurry.Well, I understand some of the frustration this camera can cause. Mine does shoot in 1080p mode, it's just that it's not a standard 1080p. Instead of being 1080 x 1920 HD, it's 1080 x 1440 HD. Only my "FinalCut Pro" can use this footage without getting a vertical pillar on the left side. That being said, once I set the camera to 720p HD "Sports" mode, that's where this camera shines. It creates .MOV files I can import into iMovie easily. The camera is light, so I mounted it on an "Estes" rocket and launched it a couple hundred feet up. Well, there was a problem with the rocket, the parachute did not deploy and it crashed, but the camera kept videoing and saved the file. Very impressive. The impact would have destroyed most cameras, but this one not only was in one piece, it captured the crash on video in HD. Very cool video. The camera has told me there is a problem with the SD card that I knew was fine, but ejecting the card and reseting it solved the problem. The display screen is kinda dark if using it outside in direct sunlight, but did I forget to mention the camera was $23? I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 because of the dim display and the weird 1080 format and SD card error message, but I plan on using this camera whenever I need video but don't want to risk my nicer cameras. This camera is very cheap feeling and even cheaper in its operation. The thing just isn't useful for most situations. The firmware of the camera is bad and it often requires a shutdown/restart operation before it will start recording. You press the big red button, and nothing happens. You have to turn it off, then turn it back on, then you can record a video. But DON"T MOVE too much@!@ Any shaking of this camera can jostle the memory card. This causes the camera to immediately save your video or lose it all together. Finally, the cam often freezes up for no reason at all. When this happens you have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds before the camera will shut down.
Now, the video quality? Also horrible. I don't know how they get away with calling it "HD". I have several VERY cheap mini cameras (808 keychain cams) that cost me around $15. The video quality of this RCA is similar to those super-cheap cams.
So, save your money. If you need a really cheap cam, look into the "808 camera" or "mini-dv camera" styles. They have their limitations but they are more reliable than this RCA. I also have a Flip brand Mino-HD camera that is VERY nice, sturdy, well made, and reliable. That camera films in true quality High Definition. Good luck!
