I have been archiving my work on DVD-DLs for a while, but now my files have gotten too big so I wanted a Blu-ray burner for my 2011 MacBook Pro to Archive on. Had a hard time finding one as Apple doesn't seem to promote optical backups. Decided to try the Sony VBD-MA1 and to my surprise it worked on first try. The Mac recognized immediately. I use Toast to burn and it was easy and fast. I recommend this any Mac user.

I bought this cause I have a HD camcorder and the built-in 120 gb hard drive has reached it's capacity. Now I can record and save my videos to blu-ray discs. Before this product, I had to burn to DVDs and that nullified the HD quality of my videos. I highly reccomend this product to anyone that wants to burn their HD videos to Blu-ray discs.

I've read some of the negative reviews here but Sony's VBD-MA1 is perfection (and I'd be the first to pick on Sony). It's right out-of-the-box and operating within minutes and burning fabulous Blu-Ray 1080i HD.Carefully read the SPECS before you buy it. Some said it would not work with a Canon camcorder but mine did with ease. Sony's PMB quickly found the Canon, some quick device driver software added and then using Sony's PMB software, it took the files and burned them onto Blu-Ray disc. In HD from a AVCHD format camcorder.
It is a bit noisy as several have said here but nothing excessive. It's heavy enough not to slide around but as said it is just too easy to use right out of the box.
Too many of us are new to buring AVCHD 1080 HD format so I'd suggest you buy both a rewritable and once-use disc. They can be pricey! Use the rewritable first to be sure you are compliant with your camcorder, computer and the VBD-MA1 as well. Also keep in mind that some of the less expensive brands of discs are sub-par low quality disc. Sony's own label and Panasonic's label handled the deck well whereas Kodak and Memorex did not always.
Great item! It burns other formats as well and also worked with Pinnacle/Avid software with ease (if you are editing). It also features Direct Burns as well.
Well worth its $300.00 price tag but Amazon had it for $199 and Prime as well! That's a great deal.

I bought a Sony HandyCam HDR CX-130 Camcorder, the lowest priced Sony HD Camcorder. It's $150 less than the 160G unit. Well with a 16G Class 4 SD card I can record 2 hours of HD video. I used the $150 I saved to buy this unit. This unit is amazing. It can put my 2 hour HD video on a Blu Ray or DVD. Also i have the added extras. I can record from any source. I just transfered several VHS tapes to DVD at a cost of $0.25 per 2 hour video. Also, I can place a SD card full of photos iinto this thing and burn a 4.7G DVD of those photos. Great when traveling. This unit is very portable. I also tranfered several hours of my old miniDV home nmovies to DVD. I am amazed at the quality of the video transfers.Took it on Vacation and immediately burned my movies in the RV. Put the SD card back into the camera to take more movies.
It's exactly what I was looking for. Using the HandyCam's highest HD setting it will record 2 hours of video on a 16G SD card and then the Recorder will transfer those 2 hours of HD video to a Blue Ray.
The Good

2. Easy to use, idiot proof.
3. Portable
4. Works with any Video input. Composite, SD card, DV
5. Archives Photos in a snap to a DVD or Blu Ray
6. Can copy my 3D photos to DVD, I needed that option.
The Bad
1. no HDMI input
2. Can't record 3D Video.
