Well I also was pessimistic when ordered 4 of those to setup local backup on 4 SATA drives on a 30$ SATA controller using software RAID under linux... but now, when around 2 years left, none of the drives has failed, SMART diagnostics never produced any warning on the self-tests... and that is under quite heavy load (this box backs up around 6 desktops and 1 heavy server)

So I can't say anything bad about these drives. Surely it is up to the sampling luck but, make your own judgements

I knew that WD quality control has been going down in the last few years, but I was still foolish enough to give this a try. This probably shouldn't be a surprise, but the drive was DOA. It makes loud noises when spinning up, then seems to work fine for 5-10 minutes, then another loud noise, and it causes a blue screen. I'm waiting for the RMA now.
