.I use it in meetings where we have multiple participants and it's difficult to keep up by taking notes.
You can play it back later and make sure to capture what everyone wanted to say.
Of course, it can be misused and "spy" in the product title alludes to that but it can also be used to make sure you don't miss anyone's input and everyone truly has their voice heard. Used responsibly and it's a productive tool.
The sound is clear in most meeting settings e.g., 12x12 feet conference rooms with 5 to 8 participants. Larger rooms, or more noisy settings can affect audio quality. Not very helpful in "seminar" type scenarios unless you are positioned near a speaker.
Sliding the pocket clip down starts it. Sliding up stops it. Each new "start" begins a new audio file.
The charging light is right of the clip you'll see it as it charges (flashes when done). The OTHER side (left of clip) is the microphone. While the light is not seen when recording BE SURE, if you lay it down, the mic is UP.
The included management software is easy to use (Windows 7). As the product description says you get about 4.5 hours on the High Quality setting (select XHQ). All my comments are based on using XHQ.
UPDATE They newest version records longer and has a different interface. I have both. The older interface was easier. The newer records 3 times longer but takes more effort to set up. Once set up the new item works the same... charge, clip down is on, plug in to download files.
Also the mic has changed sides. Now, if clipped in your breast pocket (shirt) the mic is facing your mouth (before faced away to your left).
.The people who make Memo Q decided to change up the product. The original version came with a very important piece which they have decided to eliminate in the ones you buy now. The top of the pen is where you insert the earphone or the USB connector to your computer. The original version had a cap that fit over this gaping and very conspicuous hole when you used the pen. Now they don't send a cap. That means you walk around with a pen with a large hole in the top you are announcing that you are wearing an electronic device. It cannot be used to record conversions because in addition to the huge USB hole in the top, they also emblazened the name MEMOQ on the clip the piece you need to press down to have the pen record. In addition, because you need that piece to be pressed down, you have to be careful not to adjust the pen while it is recording. If you push the pen into your shirt pocket, it will cause the clip to rise, and turn off the recording.
This pen could have been the perfect recording device. Simple laziness on the part of the manufacturer of leaving out the cap renders it useless. I do not recommend it, though it actually records well. But what good is it if anyone who see it will immediately stop talking? All for a small piece of plastic. How cheap can they be. As an "executive pen" it needs to look like one. Without the cap it looks like something hotels give away. And you look like you use anything that will write. If they are more observant they will see that the hole is for an electronic connection and then they will see MEMEOQ on the pen clip. Now everyone knows what it is for, and now it cannot be used for anything. File this under "it would have been perfect if it weren't so stupid."This Spy Pen recorder is very incognito and has excellent reception. I have listened to the recorded audio from this device and it works great.Great design and recording quality. Undetactable that it is a recording devise. Slim, elegant look. I even use it to record telephone conversations on speaker phone and it works like a charm.I bought the pen and it does not work. Battery will not hold a charge. A complete waste of money!
