Ur-08 4gb Digital Voice Recorder Pen Black

Ur-08 4gb Digital Voice Recorder Pen BlackHere is my experience with this recorder. I have a non-commercial website where I have more detail. Google "USB audio recorder review".

This audio recorder and USB thumb drive is simple, light weight, low cost and has very good audio quality. It weighs about 1/2 oz. The plastic construction is adequate but flimsy. This recorder can record audio for about 5-10 hours on one battery (LiPo) charge, and the flash memory holds about 47-70 hours. Charge the battery through the USB and a red LED lets you know it is charged. The audio format is WAV IMA ADPCM mono and most computer multimedia players can play that, but some music players can't. A bright blue LED is on while recording. Since there is no audio jack or playback controls, the only way to listen to the recorded audio is to connect the USB and play the audio WAV files on your computer. Also functions as a class 4 USB thumb drive.

20 Apr 2012 I am changing this review to let you know there are at least two very different versions of this recorder. The recorder is sold with different color cases (black and silver, white and blue, white and orange, white and green) but otherwise the cases are identical. The electronics inside are very different. Which one will be delivered to you? I don't know.

Version #1 records 128 Kbps for about 10 hours on a battery charge, and the 4GB flash memory holds about 70 hours. Each recording consists of one or more files and each file is limited to 240 minutes (about 230 megabytes).

Version #2 records 192 Kbps for about 5 hours on a battery charge, and the 4GB flash memory holds about 47 hours. Each recording consists of one or more files and each file is limited to about 126 minutes (about 182 megabytes). Version #2 is silence de-activated, that is, when the sound level is low it temporarily stops recording, then a sound will start it recording again. The sound threshold is not configurable. This pause does not change the 5 hour battery time.

PROS:

1. Low cost.

2. Very clear recordings.

3. Built in rechargable battery thrue USB port.

4. Simple controls (ON and OFF).

5. A single LED ready light for recording, charge, and low battery.

6. Records for up to 35 hours (but battery "only" lasts 13 hours).

7. Very small (it's a USB stick).

8. Records each voice message consecutively.

CONS:

1. No built-in playback AT ALL.

2. Must have a computer or smart phone with USB port to hear your recordings.

CONCLUSION

For me, it's worth the 15 bucks, but it would be a five star item if it played back too, but then that would add a few layers of electronics, cost, and complexity if you wanted to hear your recordings in a non-linear fashion; not to mention the small piezio speaker, audio amplifier, and extra firmware required.

Most importantly, however, this little device is so simple to use that I can now safely record messages while driving my car, since I don't have to look down at its controls to do so (much less face the dangers of using a pen to write in a note pad while on the road!!).

Very handy tool for recording meetings and conversations. Holds more conversation than expected and replay is easy. Each time you restart it shows as a new recording and can be renamed for organization. Lets you skip ahead or go back as necessary. Need to be set on a table rather than held in the hand because of very sensitive sound pick up. Delighted with my purchase.Ur-08 4gb Digital Voice Recorder Pen Black

The recorder is very easy to use. Turn it to the on position and wait for the green light to record. It powers itself by being connected to your computer's usb port. The only problem I have is that it makes your voice sound flat. I have to use Audacity to take the pitch up a half note to sound normal. I wasn't expecting to have to do that everytime I uploaded a file. But since I actually only paid $5 for it, I can live with it. I would not recommend this for professional use unless you want and have time to edit the sound at each upload.

I did a lot of research for a cheap voice recorder and I thought I had to buy a bulky one that costs about $50-$90, but I'm very grateful that I stumbled over to this little device. I'm a college student looking for voice recorder and I didn't want something that would be noticeable, so I am super thankful that this only cost me about $15. I worried about different versions (chucklohr's review), but after testing the one I received I am very delighted! (oh so very happy, that I purchased another one for about $11, which I don't have yet but hoping it is as good as this one!) It records really well from long distances and the play back is very clear. Sometimes I worry that it is not recording because there isn't a flashing light to indicate that it is recording. Then again, I trust it after letting it sit for a while and record the silent(just to see if it turns off on itself). It kept on recording, which I think is neat. No need to worry that it will turn off when there is silence. And the only down side is that you would need a laptop to listen to the recordings. So to sum it all up, I would recommend this to anyone looking for something that is small, unnoticeable, and doesn't mind listening to it later.

**IMPORTANT**

If you find that your UBS voice recorder has stopped recording you can manually reset it yourself. I found out that the little button on the back does not work, but if you go to "My Computer", right click on the icon that shows the USB voice recorder, click on "Format", the click "Reset Device Defaults", and click "Start" it should reset the device as new. Just be sure to move all important data out of the USB first before doing so. I also found out that if you deleted its original "RECORD" folder then it will lose it's ability to work properly. This is because the device needs a place to store the recordings into and it is automatically set to store into that folder.
