I was very apprehencive when I bought one of these, it just sounded to good to be true. I could not find any reviews on it, so I just took a shot in the dark. When I got it I put there CD in my PC, and plugged the device into my USB port. To my suprise, within a couple of min. it was all downloaded. One of the easiest setups I have ever had. Within 5 min. I was sending voice E-mails.It goes right to your E-mail and you can send it to anyone you want, just like a regular E-mail. Whoever you send it to does not need anything special,Windows Media Player works or any Media player they have as a default player. Everything seems to work just as stated. I defenitly had some suprised friends when they herd my voice on a E-mail attachment. They thought I was some kind of computer whiz. I have a buddy of mine who worked for IBM for many years before retiring. I sent him one of these and evidently he was on his PC at the time, 5 min. later I got a phone call, his first words where ( How the heck did you do that). Love this product.I'm using this device on a fairly new Dell Studio 1747 laptop running Windows 7 Pro and Outlook 2010. The device does work, but there are some caveats to be aware of before purchasing. The software application that comes with this device is on a mini CD, so if you have a computer that can't read minidiscs, such as with Dell and other trayless DVD/CD drives, you'll need to copy the software installer to a full-size disc or flash drive to install. Also, big caveat, this device does not have a system driver than is always running to enable it all the time, it has a software application that must stay open and running at all time in order to use the device. Although the hardware has an LED light on it that would appear to indicate when the device is recording or not, in fact the LED stays on always, so apparently it only indicates that the device is powered on. Only the software interface indicates when recording is taking place, so to actually record a voice message, the app must not only be running, but visable on screen. If the app is not visible on screen and you press the record button, recording will take place, but the app will not come to the forefront, and you cannot send the email until it does. To stop recording you can only press the send button, which will give you a screen to cancel or send. Not intuitive, but faster for sending vmails.Another big caveat: the microphone pickup is poor, so even with the Windows input level set to max, your mouth needs to be about 6 inches away from the mic to get a clear recording with good volume. My other mics don't have to do this. This device is designed to sit on your desktop, yet it won't sufficiently pick up your voice from that dstance. At the proper distance, sound quality is good.
One thing it WILL do is easily save your recording to your hard drive as an MP3 file so you can quickly make MP3 recordings.
I'm surprised at the glowing reviews of this device, apparently these people have not looked at software that does the same job with a regular computer microphone, or perhaps they are not using it for business. I bought this to speed my business email responses rather than writing lengthy replies, and I think this will be too inconvenient in the long run. I don't want to have to pick up the big bulky desktop microphone and keep it 6 inches from my mouth every time I want to record.
To get it to work, I had to set the device as the default mic in the Windows sound control panel, and the instructions do not tell you that is required.
The US distributor of this device is a novelty and gift company, not the actual manufacturer. Not sure if their support is any good, but they do have a web site with very limited info and voicemail, no software, drivers, or specs for this device. The documentation that comes with the recorder is poor and doesn't have any advice for troubleshooting if it doesn't work for you, and I highly doubt the distributor can help since they're a gift/novelty company.

I received a Vmail Voice Recorder (VM-1) as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, the package did not contain the software disk. I have repeatedly sent requests to Tech Tools (DBA Princess Gifts) to provide me with a copy of the software or to let me know where I can download it. So far, no responses other than one from SpamArrest making sure that I was legitimate.Since I don't have the software, I have not been able to test the unit, so take my rating with a grain of salt. If I ever receive the software, I will update my rating.
