Memorex MVD2047 Progressive Scan DVD Player, Black

Memorex MVD2047 Progressive Scan DVD Player, Black
  • DVD, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, audio CD, CD-R/RW, MP3 CD, and picture CD playback
  • Dolby Digital output and On-Screen graphical user interface
  • Zoom function and VFD display
  • Full function remote control and audio/video cables
  • 16:9/4:3 picture select

Terrible Purchase! I purchased the DVD player because it had an HDMI connection which I needed because my new 92" Mitsubishi TV had limited AV inputs. I tried the HDMI connection on multiple inputs on the new TV. The picture is fine, but there is no sound. I switched with another apparatus that was working fine and connected the DVD player to the same TV HDMI input---still no sound! I switched HDMI cables---still no sound!

I have made several purchases from Amazon and have always been satisfied. However, two purchases in a row were terrible! (This and a non-working Field and Stream Dive watch were both garbage!)

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD PLAYER IF YOU WILL BE USING THE HDMI CONNECTION!

I bought this dvd player roughly two years ago, and it just stopped working yesterday. For under $30, if you're just looking for something simple to play dvds on a regular basis, this is a great choice. We used it several times a day, every day and were pretty hard on it, but it was able to keep up. Now I am looking for the same one (they no longer sell it where I purchased it before, so I've been looking everywhere for it) because we loved ours so much. The low profile of this dvd player makes it attractive enough to leave out on our tv stand and is simple enough to use that young children can operate it (this is, of course, after it is hooked up). I am not sure why so many people had issues with it not coming with a remote as mine had the remote (although it was stuck in the packaging, so we spent some time looking for it). The remote is very basic, but as we only wanted to play dvds with our basic tv, it works fine for my family. Overall, this is a nice simple dvd player for the price---if you want bells and whistles though you'd probably want to choose a different one.

I have hooked this unit up several ways. Regardless of the set up, I was not able to get sound when I used the HDMI cable. I tried every variation on the audio settings and no luck.

I picked up this model at a local Radio Shack store for 20 bucks. For a DVD model with HDMI upscaling I thought I would give it a try. My intention is to use this DVD player as a backup to my other DVD player at my vacation home but I wanted to give it a shakeout. I hooked this up to a very high end 7.2 home theatre system with the HDMI cable plugged into an AV receiver. For a very cheap DVD player the upscaling video on a 52" HDTV was very good! Certainly not in the class of an HD Blu Ray player would produce but I was impressed. Best of all, the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound audio was outstanding, just as good as my Sony DVD play costing 3x as much. I then plugged the HDMI directly into my HDTV to test if there would be sound issues since others have posted problems with this. I found none. It worked just fine!

The 5 stars are for the value for what this player will produce based on the price point, even at $50. My only complaint is that this player will not stream DTS 5.1 digital audio but I don't think most people who buy this player would care anyway.
