Sony CCDTR517 8mm Camcorder

Sony CCDTR517 8mm CamcorderI had a JVC GR-DV1 digital camcorder in 1997. Unfortunately, it broke. And I didn't have enough money to buy another digital camcorder. So 4 years later, I decided to get the Sony TR-517.

This 8-mm camcorder doesn't have all the features as a digital does, but it has a whole lot more exciting features than the Canon or Samsung 8-mms.

Features: special effects(e.g. pastel, neg. art, sepia, black &-white, mosaic, solarization, slim, and stretch)

4 faders(black, stripe, monotone, and bounce)

6 Program AE modes( I don't know the names of them, but they make your picture look beautiful)

Pre-set titler/make-your-own titles

And don't forget about the XR(eXtended Resolution), which gives the camcorder up to 280 resolution lines. While the Canon and Samsung 8-mm cams make your home movies look washed out and grainy, the Sony TR-517 sharpens the look of your movies.

If you buy the Sony TR-517, you'll be buying:

THE GREATEST AND MOST SIMPLEST CAMCORDER ON THE MARKET!!!

I bought this camera 3 months ago. It's great to have it 2nd-hand... It is easy to use, stable, small enough to carry with convenience. I have focussed on the mid-noon sun with maximum exposure and everything turned dark after that but after a few hours of rest, it could work properly like before. One thing I don't like is that you need a tripod when in closest zoom-in because you can never have steady hands to keep the picture not shaking. It does not have an LCD so you have to keep your eye on the color viewfinder. However, it's worth what it is. With [the money spent], I can't expect to get any greater camera. So it's a good job for less and I am happy with it. If you have more money, better buy a more modern model which has LCD for example.

The Sony CCDTR517 Hi8 Camcorder, while not having the bells and whistles of todays camcorders, is good for playing your old 8mm up to your Hi8 cassete tapes. You can also convert your old tapes from anolog to digital if your computer has the right equipment and software. You will be able to save your videos to your PC or laptop, burn your videos to CDs for show or backup, and/or post them to your favorite media sights and/or media devices.

It doesn't have a side screen but the eye screen is in color. Also, it doesn't have a snapshot button to take a still picture. The only intro and exit effect is fade in and out. It does have a few picture effect. But, it is a Sony Handycam so it does have the nightshot feature. This camcorder is basic by todays standard but still sells over $100. Go figure.

In my opinion, the Sony CCDTR517 is still good for something, It records just as nice as the lighting provided and plays them back just as well as some of the other camcorders that are out today. I myself own one. I bought one last year to play back my own 8mm and Hi8 videos and it worked just fine.

The item I received was not a Hi8 and it didn't even have the correct cords to hook it up to my equipment. I returned it and purchased something from somewhere else.
