Our FP tape player has survived almost 3 years of toddler hardships and our daughter still listens to a story tape (or more) every day. Seems to be in fine working order despite the dragging up and down stairs by the microphone, etc. Also, the batteries seem to last a surprisingly long time.I'm adding this bit on years later: the version we bought 6 yrs ago still works fine! Hope the manufacturing is still the same.My Parents got this for my 19 month old son and he loves it. Like one other reviewer said, it has my son talking. He has been dragging it around the house ever since he got it. He loves music so, I requested a tape player but this is much better. I think it would be a great toy for the budding singer or jokester of the family. Even the adults were having a great time! The voice warps are hilarious. The martian is our favorite! Great toy! Enjoy!

My 5 year old son has the earlier blue and white model. It has been used and used and is still running great. My 3 year old daughter wanted one, and her brother would not share, so we went searching. All we could find is this current model, so this is the one that she has. The voice warping is fun, but seldom used. The unit is very heavy for a small child to carry. The 2 side handles are awkward to hold.My daughter likes to listen to lullaby music at night. We have had trouble with the play button sticking. When we wake up in the morning, the batteries are dead. We have spent more on batteries than on the player! She likes to keep the player on her bed, so that she can turn her tapes over. We have never had a problem with this until tonight. I went in to check on her and found that the microphone cord was wrapped around her neck twice! She was fine, but just a word of caution, do not let your child use this on their bed.
Overall, a good tuff product. Heavy, and heavy duty. Uses lots of batteries.
Update: I contacted Fisher Price about the problem with the play button sticking. They sent a new unit at no cost. The very first night we used it, the button stuck. In the morning, the batteries were dead. It has been very frustrating. I guess that we will have to plug in with an adaptor. I still like the old model best.

My 2 year old just received this for his birthday and he loves it! My other son (who's 3) loves it even more. I'll have to get another one so they won't fight over it. So far it's been dropped off the sofa (onto hardwood floors) and dragged around by the microphone and it still works. Not to mention the tug-of-war between both my sons using the tape recorder. Even Dad and I enjoy playing with it! The only thing is the button on the microphone, my kids haven't figured out that they have to push it AND talk at the same time in order to hear themselves in the different voices. But that won't take long for them to learn!Update 3 years later: This recorder didn't last long. After purchasing another one for my youngest son, they both lasted about 2 months before finally dying. The microphone cord just couldn't withstand the tug-of-wars and the cassette holder lost the pieces that lock it in place during operation. It was fun while it lasted!Easy to handle, load and listen with headphones; bright and sassy colors;surface not slipperyeasy for handicapped to use
