Philips Digital Voice Tracer Recorder 612 (LFH0612/27)

I've had this for over a year now it still works fairly well so I thought I'd write a review. The buttons seem stronger and much more durable than my old Olympus DS-30 (which isn't saying much) which I loved, but like all Olympus voice recorders, it didn't last long. The soft touch buttons stopped working one by one and it's now junk. Not so with this recorder.

I Like:

The durability.

The sound is clear enough.

It has 4 files that are easy to access as is the menu (which I rarely use)

Decent display with battery strength icon.

It also shuts itself down to save battery life if left on. (It's best to shut it down yourself and put on 'Hold' though....see below)

I dislike:

The fact that it didn't come with any manual.

I don't like the position of the record button...I prefer that to be on the top on the side.

This must be carried around in the 'hold' mode since the record button is in a bad place and will surely

turn on in your pocket if you don't.

I don't download files to my computer so I've never tried that feature.

As for the lack of a manual....if you buy this, the way to delete files is as follows:

Press and hold down 'Delete' button...(it's the 'Stop' button too and will only stop if you press it lightly)

Press center button and file will flash that you want to delete.

Press it again and it will read 'No'.

Press the 'FF' button just to the right and it will read 'Yes'.

Press center button again and the file is deleted.

Or follow the instruction on page 7 here where you can delete the whole file:It took me forever to figure this our myself since these dolts don't include a manual that actually tells you this. I found the PDF file months later. For that they lose a star.

I also would like to know why this 1G recorder is more expensive from this vendor than both the 2G & 4G stereo

recorders from Philips (the same model) at Amazon?

I absolutely love this. I am glad I bought it. The sound quality is very nice. If you are speaking and there is noise in the background, your voice will be at the forefront. There is LOTS of time to record on this device too. Very happy with this product.

This thing is a little hard to get started on in operating it but once I got it figured out I absolutely love it. The recording quality of music is very acceptable. Recording quality of voice is of course great.
