I am an American Soldier in the US Army Infantry. Our living conditions over here does not support the fragile conditions needed for most DVD players. This does not stop soldiers from buying DVD players, we need them to help keep our sanity.

This DVD player from Toshiba has been with me for 7 months. the only problem I have had with it is the cutoff button than shuts off the screen when you close the screen. That is an easy fix and a minor problem, all you do is pull up on the little button. That is probably why other people in the states say thiers cant't take bumps in the car.

Well I can tell you, I am in charge of an Armored vehicle and in a Bradley it is a very bumpy ride. I have had zero problems with my Toshiba while other guys keep buying cheaper DVD players over and over again. My Toshiba has been thru sandstorms, and keeps running smoothly. It has been in tempertures of over 130 degrees.

I am pleased enough with this product to take the time to write this to say good job Toshiba and thanks for such a durable product. I have seen hundreds of movies on mine and as for the battery, mine lasts up to almost 4 hours. No problems there and I keep my battery connected. I think the problem people are running into is they rely on outlet power and keep the battery connected while using the DVD. I rely on my battery. And charge it when I have electricity.

Anyways if you want a durable DVD player, this is your DVD your looking for.

I have now had this unit for 6 months and have put it through a tough trial of travel. The unit has held up very well in suitcases, backpacks, planes, cruise ships and a 4-year-old daughter. It has been dropped and banged around and god only knows what the baggage handlers do with our luggage.

The picture quality is great and the sound is what it is for those small speakers, with headphones you would think you were in a Boses surround sound theater. The only drew back is if you really want to use it for the car. This unit gets an F. Any small bump in the car and this is in a Volvo S80 the unit re-sets, constantly. It has no real stabilization for the unit to handle any kind of shock while playing. We actually put two down pillows between the front seats and sat the unit on top of these and it still re-sets itself on small bumps, very frustrating. In a stable environment it works great. But if you are contemplating using this in a car do not buy the SD-P1200.

So far I have owned an RCA5400P, a Mintek 1710 and the Toshiba SD-P1200. The Mintek unfortunatly started skipping on me and I would lose the right audio channel after a while but the price tag and the accessories such as the car adapter made it a great unit. I purchased the Toshiba today and it is going right back to the store. First off the screen is horrible compared to the Mintek, it is pixilated and dark, almost as if the contrast were turned all the way up and there is no way to turn it down. Also the dvd door is very flimsy and has to be completely shut all the way for it to operate, slight movements reset the player due to a bad push pin design and you have to start the disk over again. You would think that Toshiba would be making advancements in things like shock resistance and screen quality with a $499.00 price tag and not red rubber but right now I wish I just had my quirky Mintek back. :(

I was in the market for a portable DVD player for my 6 year old that he could also use in his room. After much research and window shopping decided to get the Toshiba. LOVE IT! Hooked it up right in the store parking lot (bought an AC/DC/airplane adapter) for my son to use it in the car, also use it at home, in the kitchen, chillin' on the hammock, as a DVD player for his bedroom TV...can't wait for our trip in Sep to use it on the plane! [definatly worth the cost]...doesn't even slide off your lap in the car since it's rubberized. Easy to use and good quality (sound is great with the []Sony headset I bought). What else can I say?...easy to use, good quality, DURABLE, fits in my pocketbook, etc. Worth the extra money! (you get what you pay for)

I had this unit for a couple of hours when I thought my Initial 1810 was going to go back to the store. I liked this unit very much. It was ultra-cool looking with it's rubberized outer skin, and the black and red theme.

It played everything I threw at it. Very surprising, given that no other Toshiba player I have heard of will play SVCDs. I tried VCD, SVCD, anamorphic DVD, full screen DVD, and widescreen DVD. Imation CDr and Sony DVD+RW worked fine.

You might not be thrilled with the aspect ratio for SVCD, though. I thought things were a little squished vertically, and I could not find a setting that would render it correctly and use the whole screen from left to right.

If this unit had an 8 inch screen for $500, then I would have returned the Initial 1810 and kept this one. In my opinion, anything under 8 inches is just too small.

This unit was obviously more solid than my Initial 1810, but it didn't seem to be worthwhile to me to pay $100 more and lose an inch of screen.
