There had been several dashboard out there, but they were terrible they ran at 320x240 and were pretty unreliable.

This one looks great on paper, and on first sight, it seems perfect it's attached to the windshield with a suction cup, which is much more convenient than adhesive that most other products use. Luckily, there's no half-witted custom software to get the data you can either quickly eject the SD card and pop it into a card reader, or unscrew the entire camera from the suction cup mount and attach it to a computer with the USB mini jack, where it shows up as a USB mass storage device. Old files will be automatically deleted, so it's possible to keep the camera in the car until it's necessary to retrieve footage. There's a removable battery pack, and the camera can be charged with the included 12V cable.

Well... so far, it's the ideal dashboard camera but the problem lies in the actual purpose of the camera: Its footage. It is 640x480 at a solid 30fps, and the image is remarkably stable. Even on bumpy roads, there is no shaking. The image itself however is blurry and blown out. Even on sunny days, it is virtually impossible to make out license plates the very thing the camera is supposed to help with.

The nighttime vision is reasonable. Obviously, the quality is even worse and has a horrible bloom, but it's possible to clearly see what's going on. But again, forget about identifying license plates, even that of the car right in front you at a red light.

There are minor usability issues before every ride, the camera needs to be turned on, and then recording needs to be enabled. Why not have a mode where the camera records whenever it detects 12V current?

Other than that definitely a huge step up from the previous dashboard cameras, but the image quality just isn't there yet.

I am a truck driver who is subjected to alot of road rage. I did not buy it to prosecute people but to help me if the worst (an accident occurs). You cannot make out the license plates but it is for the price remarkably clear. I understand the human eye is much more acute than a camera.

It will allow you to for a small price have 2 minute blurbs to use and show the bad. If I wanted a top end item I would have paid the price. I bought something to more use to show what truckers are up against, not something to be admissible in court. I am not trying to arrest people just protect myself if it comes to a he said/ she said situation then I can have them take the card and hopefully they use it for investigative purposes (and that is a crap shoot legally).

Now the bad. The instructions are lacking and you must play a bit to understand how to activate the night vision part.

This is a nice little camera! We used it to tape our off-road outing and felt it did a decent job. The image is a little blurry but you can see what is going on. The thing we didn't like about the camera is the way it taped over some of our earlier stuff and how it taped in two minute intervals even if it was constantly on. We loved how well it stayed on the windshield and how smooth the taping was even though we were going over some pretty bumpy areas! I would recommend this product to our friends!!

Just an advise: don't make same mistake like I did, don't buy this DVR! In 4 month I had 3 cameras like that, and every time it kept breaking(shuting off by itself, kept beeping and flashing red light for whatever reason, stoped recording after 30 seconds). Video quality is good, but it is HIGHLY UNRELIABLE product. Three same model DVRs and ALL of them failed!

The image quality is usable for a 640*480 camera. You are not going to make out license plates, but can use the footage to show what happened. The battery lasts about 2.5 hours in daylight and 1 hour at night with the infrared lights on.

The camera has four buttons, power, rec/play, mode, and time.

The camera does not have any kind of display, you need to use a monitor (laptop with s video in will work) to position the device with any accuracy or to set the time for the first time.

The infrared night vision is pointless it WILL NOT work through glass. As this is sold as a car DVR thats a big problem if you want to record outside your vehicle. You cannot turn the night vision off. In periods of low light they will illuminate and drain the batteries. I opened up my cameras (2 screws) and cut the to wires going to the infrared board and took the board out to make my cameras day time only. This will void the warranty.

You must manually start recording every time, it will not start recording whenever the power is supplied for example.

Here is a time saver -

normally you would turn on the camera with the power button then press the REC button, and later turn it off by pressing the REC button again and then the power button to turn it off. HOWEVER, if you press the power button to turn it off whilst it is still recording it will instantly start recording again as soon as you turn it back on.

It has a standard lens, not wide angle lens. In my CrewCab pickup with it positioned in the middle of the truck pointing towards either side it would only capture the width of one of the side windows.

EDIT:

This camera has an annoying flaw. I recently hard wired the camera in to my pickup so that the power comes on when the truck is started and goes off whenever the keys are removed. Even if the battery is fully charged the unit will power down when the power is removed, and not switch to its internal battery you can manually turn it back on. It would be helpful if the unit continued to record until the battery died, instead you have to turn it back on every time you remove the power.

So if you pull the power cord it will power down and not switch to its battery automatically.

I have two of these and its a feature and not a fault on my unit.
