This is exactly what you need to connect a modern Mac to a digital optical input on a receiver. It's well under the maximum length limit for this sort of cable.Macs have an audio out that supports analog and digital (optical) output.I was a bit skeptical buying such a cheap product but it works perfectly. What else could I want for the price?

This cable works just like I expected. If you have a MacBook or other computer with optical in/out this cable is perfect for connecting it to a receiver or other digital speaker system. Initially, I thought the cable may have been no good, but this was due to a dirty optical port on my computer. If it doesn't work, try getting a toothpick or something to clean the lens inside the port.Product arrived in a timely manner. Saved me from having to buy one more thing, and allowed me to get full sound with my Tritton headphones in my macbook pro. I also am able to use it with my ipod and basically anything else that uses 3.5 mm (standard) headphone jack. Works well. Worth the buy.Bought a pair of these, one goes from my bluray to receiver, the other from computer to receiver. They fit nice and snug. Optical is the way to go if your receiver doesn't do hdmi.
