I love this thing, I am recording all my LP's and 78 rpm records onto SD cards with this you can play them back via headphones on the recorder itself, upload them to your computer, or play them on another device that uses SD cards. The recordings from the built-in microphone are great, too. Don't let the sound from the tiny on board speaker fool you the files are of excellent quality when played on good speakers through a line-out or with headphones. This will record anything I am a music/radio fanatic and this recorder is invaluable to me.I've been recording my teachers lectures with the Philips DVT5500/00 4 GB with no problem at all. I love the little remote control and its very useful. At the beginning of the class I place the recorder on the teacher's desk and I record/pause when necessary. It really helps when, like my teacher, people talks very fast and I can review or the mid-terms exams.Lightweight, clear sound quality, easy to transfer recordings to PC. Ideal for: 1) Recording conversations with the grandchildren, 2) Saving family vocal memories, songs, etc., 3) It's not an obtrusive item, and permits the recorded person to be "less self-conscious" about being taped. The packaging claims to give you "studio quality" recordings and well... it's mostly true.
If you use a good quality external microphone (1/8th in. jack only) you can achieve very clear WAV recordings.
The built in mics are weak and tinny but fine for normal speech recordings.
Simple to use, push the red button to record and stop to stop. A grandmother could use it right away.
It also has a few different mic settings for things like conversation, lecture, distance, speech recognition, etc.
If you're looking to attach pro XLR mics for recording music, skip this and get a Zoom H4N.
If you want clear recordings with VERY easy to use menus and instant set up go with the Phillips.this recorder is big so it can not be easily hidden on your body... the recorder does not give any indication that it is recording. Not unless you peek at it...
