Hahnel Mk100 Uni-Directional Microphone for DSLR & Video Cameras

Hahnel Mk100 Uni-Directional Microphone for DSLR & Video CamerasI tried a Audio Technica PRO 24-CM and SMG-10 (supposedly) stereo microphone on the Canon T2i and neither were able to give reasonable volume levels as an external mic to the T2i (or T3i), mostly I read due to the weak external mic pre-amp in the Canon camera. The SMG-10 was much more a made-in-China model and didn't actually seem to feed stereo (more like dual mono) whereas the Audio Technica PRO 24-CM was actually beautiful and noticably stereo when plugged into a laptop mic but it just didn't deliver loud enough levels for the Canon camera.

The Hahnel MK100 was battery powered and had some different dB levels so I was hopeful, and didn't want to go to the giant gawky Rode VideoMic (Pro or not) and didn't want to have to buy a separate audio recording device.

This little unit delivered reasonable audio so I'm satisfied. The bump dampening isn't that effective but at least has some effect and the mic overall seems less prone to damage than the Rode models.

I've been a Rode VideoMic user for a couple of years and have been consistently happy with the performance of that mic, but as my selection of "on the road" gear has expanded, the amount of space available in my carry-on case has diminished.

Looking to save space, I decided to try the Hahnel MK100 mic, even though there have been almost no real-world use reviews of it.

My first true use of it happened recently at my son's band concert where I wanted it to pick up audio from the stage. It actually did a good job of targeting the sound I wanted, but upon returning home and reviewing the footage, two things stood out instantly.

The first is that there was consistent radio interference (the staccato crackling one sometimes hears with mics). I heard it frequently throughout my recording and is a problem I had not experienced with my VideoMic. The Hahnel was plugged directly into my Canon Vixia HF S100, so the cable run was pretty short.

The second thing is that the Hahnel picked up an unacceptable level of camera handling noise. Don't believe Hahnel's hype about their blue suspension/isolation system. It is simply too rigid to dampen handling noise. It looks fancy, but looks don't cut it with audio.

I'm quite disappointed, but perhaps I shouldn't have expected much from a mic in this price range. Could be there's a reason the Rode VideoMic Pro is that much more expensive than the Hahnel offering.

Under the right conditions (no intereference, not having to move the camera), perhaps the Hahnel does well, but it failed the first time I used it, so I'm really not of a mind to give it a second chance.

Horrible Quality, stick with Rode VideoMics if you are looking for a good DSLR mic. Returned after using in all different settings and still getting a hiss and horrible quality.
