We're happy with the video quality, the Xvid support, and the 5.1 surround sound audio over the optical connection. The only problem we've encountered with this unit is that the sound over the HDMI cable occasionally stops working for hours. We've tried checking the connections, switching inputs on the TV, switching cables, unplugging the unit for a while, switching discs, and redoing the audio settings, but nothing seems to fix it except for just waiting until it suddenly starts working again on it's own, which usually takes a number of hours. This problem with the HDMI audio has only happened two or three times so far (over the course of 6 months), but I would expect that sort of thing to never happen with a quality product. This DVD player is awesome. I was surprised to see how much it looked like the Blu-ray player I purchased a few months ago. Also it performs just as amazingly. No complaints at this time.Great picture quality, and unlike my Blu ray Sony DVD, the JVC plays all DVDs and not just some of them. A top choice if you don't need Blu Ray format. I use MKV files with the JVC to get Blu Ray quality.Don't believe a word of the hype. This device will not play European dvd's, but only those of the region for which it is set on arrival. Don't get cheated the way I did.
