Avermedia UltraTV 1500 MCE MULTR1500

This is my second 1500 MCE. Truly a quality card for the price. Previously used an ATI All-In-Wonder that uses software encoding, and was a dog. This card provides affordable, quality hardware encoding. While the software looked decent, I use Snapstream Beyond TV, which allows for use of multiple tuners in the same computer and control of cable/satellite tuners with a serial cable, among many other great features.

Adding to my review, multiple tuners work great. Snapstream software differentiates between the two cards with seamless functionality that allows me to record one show and watch another -practically impossible with cards that encode with software. Pause/rewind live TV seems unaffected by the addition of a second card. I'm using two digital cable boxes, controlled by software via serial cables, which allows me to use a remote that interacts with my computer, not the cable boxes...very important if you're building a computer that does it all. My remote controls my software, not the boxes. The computer controls the boxes...and the software switches from one digital cable box to another intelligently so you can watch one show while recording another.

Hardware encoding is where it's at. I suffered with the All-In-Wonder for a year, with handicapped functionality on a pretty high-end system, due to software encoding.

I tried a tuner from Happauge first and the quality was so bad I sent it back. Not with this one. The Avermedia tuner was easy to install and the video quality is great! Designed to be compatible with Media Center from Microsoft which was a big plus. Was just a few dollars more than the Happauge but this unit comes with the ability to bring in more channels, has an FM tuner and an additional S-Video input. It was worth it just to get the better video quality. Would have given it 5 stars except it seems to freeze when working with Microsoft's Media Center. I haven't install the software that came with it yet and that may take care of the problem. Overall -very, very satisfied.

Great quality, easy installation, no problems at all. Granted, I'm an IT tech, but even my users could handle this! My ATI All-in-Wonder PCIx graphics card also does tv. I'd hoped to run the antenna signal from the closed circuit system to the ATI and run satellite on the Avermedia simultaneously. Turns out I can only do one at a time, but really, at this point I'm splitting hairs. Great job.

Nice software. picture is good when viewed small. Easy installation. Using this to connect my PlayStation2 to my monitor.

PROS: 1. Records excellent video files in the attended mode. If you put it in PAUSE, you end up with a file which is processed fast in NeroVision 4 (if you are converting the MPEG file to a DVD disc). However the file size cannot exceed 4GB.

2. In the unattended timer mode, the file has different characteristics and the NeroVision handles it OK but slow. But the file size can exceed 4GB.

3. The cost price is reasonable.

CONS: 1. There is a minimal time delay between audio and video, when you watch it concurrently in your computer display. But the recorded file is OK.

However, when you put it in pause and resume, the time delay is not present in any significance!

2. I like the quality of Nero Enhanced 7 a whole lot better than the Windows Media Center. But Nero cannot access this program in MCE. Luckily, I have a second computer with XP PRO and a linked "server" hard drive for sharing files.
