The base is rock solid. The arms. . . not so much. The arms move in tandem, which is nice, but I could not line up the gears to have both arms to come straight out. The extensions are loose. The plastic linings don't fit nicely. Over all, not exactly precision built.
The strap is just long enough to go around my VCR, then I set the DVD player on top. They both weight nothing. Seems to be fine, but I wouldn't dream of putting an A/V receiver or an old Betamax VCR on it. The rated 20lb is optimistic.
Having said all this, I may still buy another. 3 1/2 stars. The electric and cable outlet for the flat screen TV I mounted on my patio were five feet high by design. I needed a small shelf to put the cable box on under the TV and this item met that need perfectly. It was easy to install and very versatile making it easy to adjustment to the size of the cable box. It also comes with a strap that secures the cable box to the shelf. I was very satisfied for the price which was considerably less than most of the shelving I looked at.It's a clever idea but I had trouble fastening my cable box in a secure fashion to the apparatus. A better system of either straps or clamps would be helpful.very sleek and simple design keeps everything neat looking. I had my carpenter install it, though I could have done it myself. I would recommend, especially for the price. Its sturdy and strong. I bought 2 one holds a very heavy and large DVD cable box, the other a blu ray DVD player. Very well built and secure. Arms are great at handling the weight if the box. Only recommendation I would have is to make the arms so they don't move as easily as they do. But, you don't even need the straps that come with the shelves.
