It replaced an older Olympus unit that served me well for about six years then died a sudden death. I like the VN8000PC much better because its screen is clearer and it has five channels instead of four in the old unit. I also appreciate the PC compatibility.I do miss the calendar function of the old unit, but with cell phones having that function available, it is not a major issue.
I use the VN-81000PC primarily as a reminder type, as I am old enough to have become forgetful. It is a wonderful tool and I recommend it heartily to anyone who has a need for a reminder or even to record meetings. Its sound pickup features have been much improved over the years. I like the pouch that comes with it, it allows me to hang the unit around my neck so I will have it always with me even if I am not wearing something with pockets.Olympus VN-8100PC Digital Voice Recorder 142600 (Silver and Black)
