Olympus AS-2400PC Transcription Kit

Ended up returning this product because the files I needed to use were not compatible with the software, and the foot pedal is not compatible with any other software, so the whole thing was useless. The software only supports a few types of audio files and there is no capability to support video. I was working on transcribing focus groups with at least 6 people so I needed to be able to use the video for reference. Olympus does not even sell a software that supports video. Olympus uses proprietary coding to communicate between the foot pedal and the computer, so it is impossible to set up the foot pedal to work with any other program and no patches are available. When I called customer support to find out if there was a way to convert the files to a supported format, they told me that the format I had (asf) did not exist, which of course is ridiculous. I ended up going with an Infinity foot pedal and the free software ExpressScribe, which supports video and many different kinds of files. In the end I spent less than a third of what I spent on this kit. Quality-wise, the foot pedal was good and the headset was cheap.

The transcription kit works well. The foot pedals are a bit small, making it difficult to control. The software is great and user friendly. It definitely makes transcribing recordings much, much easier than trying to work from a recorder or computer media player.

We recently upgraded from cassette to digital in my office and this is the equipment I chose to use with our Olympus Voice Recorder DS-71. It works just as I need it to. If your pedal is backwards when you connect it, simply go to the tool bar in the software, click on device, and select "foot switch settings." You can put your rewind, play and fastward in the right order there. I also learned to connect the foot pedal and software first, then connect your voice recorder. Great product that does what it should...play dictations!
