The Q-see unit basically acts your DVR box for home security and I have it hooked up to some Defender external cameras. The unit is very easy to set up, automate and record. 500 GB is a nice size hard drive which will allows you to record quite a bit of video. You can choose which cameras you want recording, and receive email alerts.

The user interface is not as easy to use as say your cable DVR box but I was able to get it working with somewhat of a learning curve. The advanced motion detector recording was somewhat wonky and inconsistent with my setup but it was not a function I wanted to use so I didn't spend that much time with it.

Otherwise, you have lots of features to choose from and if you need a DVR surveillance recording unit, this could be a great choice.

I bought this Q-see DVR to replace my broken LTS DVR, I still keep 4 cameras. After opened box, I follow the quick setup manual to setup everything,it looks perfect, nothing difficult, and I download the Q-see QS apps to my smartphone and enter public IP address( not router address ) + port number, log in with ID and passwords, do it as well as the internet explorer. So you got a live view at your smartphone and PC. Once again, there is nothing difficult to setup, just do it step by step as said in the manual.

The DVR only recorded video. Other advertising claims they made are false. You have to stop record to playback effectively. "QS494" not "QS494-5"

i have cameras watching around my home and I bought this because another customer has the same cameras and said it would work with them. I don't know how he got his to work but this thing is an expensive paper weight for me.
