Also drum machine has a lot of patterns which I liked a lot.

If you don't need 8 channels of simultaneous recording this is a perfect machine!! (this can do 2 channels of simultaneous recording)

Really....WHAT'S to think about? $15 bucks more gets you more than started with this breakthrough device and package deal.

Granted: the headphones are about as entry level as you can get for "home studio recording" but, you'd easily pay as much for just ONE set OR,

an 8 gig SD card.

Just make sure Amazon's fulfillment department gets the "PACKAGE" right and just doesn't send the R8.

I haven't yet recorded on this device yet but, there's a Russian guy on YouTube who goes through ALL the motions, step by step on the drum sounds, the effects (HUGE amount of high quality effects for guitar, bass, keys and vocals....HUGE!....did I say...uh....HUGE?) and then, step by step song construction, recording, drum programming, etc. HE'S actually a major part of what sold me on this breakthrough box. He's a good guitar player but, not a "hired gun" for ZOOM...just a regular "Joe"...uh..."Boris"....

For this money: you could never find anything more powerful and portable....I can't get over how SMALL this thing is yet...SO functional and accessible. You could even just use it as an effects box for recording or, through to your amp with your axe. Sounds are stellar, bright...some great amp modeling and effects for whatever your music is...from acoustic to Metal, its all there.

Sounds seemingly-specifically designated for, let's say vocals or, mastering or drums (some truly great creative effect, could definitely be used on other instruments, drums or, voice. "AM RADIO" simulations....I mean...REALLY unique stuff....

LINE 6 could probably be designated as the guitar-amp-effect modeling masters, as could Roland/Boss but, ZOOM is NO slouch in this area at all. VERY competitive....

The manual is quite small for my aging eyes so, I printed out the entire manual for larger type and easier reading.

IF THIS R8 was the only recording item a person had for demo-making...IF you really "got in bed" with the device and the manual, there is no doubt in my mind that you could make VERY polished and presentable finished sounding works with it. UP TO YOU to master every nuance. It's all in there....

The unit is pretty cool, but it is so hard to just get a recorder that will record with a push of a button, give you a click track with the push of a button, playback with a small speaker....what was so difficult with the old technology where you could do all that and a little more without having to be a techno genius and have to remember "how did I ever do that?" when you were done. Using this machine is having to have the instructions handy at all times...when you get used to it and step away from it for a month, you need to re-learn it all over again. Now I have been in a hundred recording studio's all over the world and have used many different kinds of recording tools and to have something this small be so complicated is just too mind boggling....If you have the idea and remember how to use the recorder, you're all set, but if you have that 100 million dollar idea and want to put it down instantaniously......you better have yourself together or you're going to lose your moment of brilliance....jmho

P.s. A speaker and a cd burner would have made this product worth the money!

it is a all around excellent camera to have, good quality video and pictures, the sound oickup is excellent, the only flaw is hooking it up to a PC sometimes it doesnt read through the usb and have to try a couple times for the PC to read the sd card from the camera, other than that i plan on getting another one

This camera is great for my purposes.

I used it for finding wild animals at night, and it worked very well. The range on the motion detector is very impressive, detected a deer at 50+ feet. The infrared flash works to around 40 feet, and is very clear for night photos. The quality is good on images. Video was alright. The battery life was decent. The casing quality was solid and and easy to set up. The settings for the camera were very customizable and easy to apply.

Cons would be slow shutter speed, there were a few images with blurred photos because the animals were in motion. Additionally the video quality was not as impressive.

Great camera for the price, far exceeded my expectations.

Very good camera for the price. It takes excellent pics and video. The battery life is descent on camera mode but it really sucks em down on video mode. I have used it for a whole year in rain, snow, warm weather, and cold weather and i got excellent pics in all of it. Now, i just hope the monster buck i got on camera all year comes back next year because he gave me the slip this year!! Also, the camera is very easy to operate. It is the first one i have ever had and had no problem using it.

My first Stealthcam quit working after six months in the field. I called Stealthcam to try to troubleshoot it and at the third call, I was solicting to buy their latest and greatest direct from them. I explained that I had two other trail cams and specifically asked if there was going to be a problem interchanging SD cards as that was the problem with my first Stealthcam. Wouldn't be a problem I was told. The second week in the field the camera switched itself from the custom setting I'd programmed to time lapse and took 5,000+ pictures of grass and trees. I called Stealthcam to return the camera and get a refund. I got a couple of runaround questions before I was told the 30 day warranty had expired. In my experience, STEALTHCAM DID NOT STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCT. I have two Bushnells and two Leupolds which perform well.

My wife and I purchased this item to film our family events over the coming years. After a lot of research I narrowed it down to this and the Sony DCR-HC96 (in fact several online reviews compared these two as well). It came down to price, which was better at Circuit City. Unfortunatly I will be paying a 15% restocking fee now as we have decided to return it and go with the Sony. The Panasonic, I feel, is a really good camera. The colors are bright and crisp...during the day. However we felt that most of the use would be during the evening hours indoors. With all three lamps turned on in our living room, "Auto" mode showed faint images and shadows when not pointed close to a light source. After several adjustments in "manual" mode we managed to get a decently lit picture on the viewfinder (...the picture will not show up as bright on your tv). Poor lighting is a big problem with Digital Camcorders, so I was actually somewhat content with this picture quality. Where this camcorder falls short IMO is the lack of an onboard lightsource. It has a "cold shoe" on the top where you can add your own light. However it will have to run on it's own batteries since it's not powered by the camera (also the only lights I have found so far are on ebay). Knowing that this is a problem with every brand of camcorder, I simply don't understand why companies insist on not putting better, if any, light sources on their equipment. Oh well...at least the Sony has a "hot shoe" to add a light source if needed.

Overall I think that this is a VERY nice camcorder...if you plan on staying in well lit areas. Just my two pennies worth :)

I purchased this nifty little camcorder primarily for making

low-budget movies. I read the reviews and compared prices on

numerous models and decided the GS320 was the most affordable

and suitable model (GS500 was unavailable at the time). The

box arrived in the mail and I began some film testing and was

quickly impressed with the video quality, especially outdoors,

creating some clear, vivid images. It's true, the low lighting

isn't the greatest and the colors typically fade with the lack of

proper lighting. If you plan on filming a lot at night or

creating some dark creepy scenarios then this model probably

isn't what you want (The GS250 however has some great low

lighting capabilities, although, it too was unavailable at the

time).

The GS320 is very lightweight taking much stress off of the

arm and wrist, and the handstrap is also adjustable to fit practically

any size hand. You can purchase high-quality mini-tapes which

bring about an even more impressive looking picture (I've found

these to cost about $10-$12 per tape).The zoom is nice, although

you do lose some picture quality as already mentioned in several

reviews. This camcorder also has some neat special features, one

of which cuts down on that typically uncontrollable background noise

by concentrating its built-in mic on the speaker. The built-in OIS

works well in keeping the image steady for those distant, closely

zoomed in shots. Since I use Adobe Premeire Elements 3.0 for movie

editing, I only dabbled briefly with the 320's effects, most of which aren't very useful to my purpose. APE 3.0 is a great editing tool to

use with the 320; it's fast and simple and allows for much creative

freedom. I bought the APE 3.0/Photoshop Elements 4.0 bundle which

ran about $100 and is indispensable to a striving movie-maker.

For the price and quality, the GS320 seems to be unparalleled.

An unregrettable choice so far.

I just picked up this camera locally to use as a backup/crash cam for a AG-DVX200 prosumer camcorder. It works fine and by all means is a good camera for the money but there a few features that are annoying enough that some folks might want to avoid it (none of these points are a deal breaker for my purposes).

1) There is no audio input so you're stuck with the microphone that is in the camera.

2) The USB, DV and power ports are located behind the battery. This wouldn't be so bad except for the next point.

3) The charger will not power the camera and charge the battery at the same time. This is a good way to force us to purchase a second battery. We need a second battery anyway..

4) The hand strap position makes NO sense. It is far too low slung making the camera fit loose in your hand. Once you loosen your grip on the camera, it flops around in your hand uncontrollably. Not a problem if once you grip it again. Bah!

5) The hot shoe is actually a cold shoe so there is no way to trigger an external flash when using the still camera mode.

While those points are enough to sway away most users, this camera is about low cost high quality video, not the normal features consumers have come to expect. The camera is solid and produces a fine picture. The controls are usable with one hand so you can make adjustments on the fly fairly easily. Pressing the camera button during video recording or playback will cause a still image to be recorded to the SD memory card kinda neat. Finally, it works with Linux so dvgrab just pulls down video on demand.

I'd give this camera a 7 overall and a 9 on picture quality. For the price, it's probably the best picture wise. You have to decide if the negatives are a show stopper or not.

I think for someone who is interested in a low cost high quality SD (standard definition) camcorder with picture quality being the number one requirement, this little camcorder is the ticket.

This camera works fantastic with our iMac & Macbook. It is a breeze to get video from the camera into iMovie. I accomplished it on my first attempt & no documentation was required.

You make the connection via Firewire, turn the camcorder to "play" mode and iMovie will detect the connection. You just click the "import" button and watch your video be copied over. The video quality is fantastic. My wife was really impressed.

We made the mistake of originally buying a JVC Everio (hard drive based camcorder). While it was possible to get the video onto our Mac, it was by no means easy. After going through about 300 different procedures, you would finally be done. But then it was complicated to manage the files. It was a giant waste of money & time.

This camera worked easily right out of the box. I am highly impressed. And of course, because we own Mac's, we didn't have to waste time by installing stupid software onto our computers (the unit does come with a CD-ROM for PC's).

We paid $365 for this unit. All in all fantastic camcorder!

I've had a Canon Z45 for over 5 years and it has provided me with reliable performance and decent quality for home and vacation video. When we purchased our 42" widescreen TV and began taping in 16:9 aspect ratio, we found during playback that the image quality was definitely hurting. I thought I should replace my Canon with a HD Camcorder, however, my research failed to convince me that the time is right high cost, various recording media, difficulties editing and unknown capability to transfer to a standard DVD. I am amazed at the quality of the video and sound it is absolutely phenomenal to quote others `crisp image, true-to-life colors'. To my eyes it's close enough to HD for my videos. My wife was skeptical of the need for a new camcorder but when she saw the first video, she was astonished at the difference. My wife and daughters enjoy the playback with the remote for slow motion and freeze frame. It is a great tool for critiquing my daughters' swim strokes.

Great price, received in 3 days. Easy to set up and use. My 10 & 12 year old daughters have no problem taping, playing back or using the joystick. Others have criticized the lack of a microphone input and the quality of the digital camera. I believe the internal microphone is excellent and I have a good digital camera for taking still shots. I own this DVD player/recorder and it has been very reliable as a recorder and a player. My first recorder was an RCA that took only DVD+RW's ( The most expensive of the lot). I stress this in capitol letters BUY-SONY-DVD's. Both my RCA and this SV2000 record every time with the white Sony DVD recordable discs ( The SV2000 records perfect on SONY DVD+R 16X DISCS). I have had very little, to horrible, to no success at all with Maxell, Memorex, and TDK brands in all varieties of recordable DVD's. when trying to record on both the RCA DVD recorder and the SV2000. If you look closely at all of the brands you will notice that the Sony discs have the recordable surface much closer to the center on the disc as compared to the others. Maybe the laser can't detect the reflective recording surface at the beginning of the formatting cycle??) Bottom line BUY SONY they always work. Something else to point out, always try your disc a couple of times when recording. I've noticed with both recorders often times I had to press stop after getting a ' This Disc Is Unable To Record' message, and pressing record once more it recorded fine, but press stop first. I suggest experimenting both Writable and RE-Writable Sony discs. It took me two weeks to figure out that you can set your record time by pressing the REC MODE button on the front of the SV2000. Watch the bottom corner of the screen as it goes from 1 hr up to 6 hr's when pressing the button. A usb computer interface would be nice, although these days you can get tuner cards for your computer that have coaxial or S-video plugs that you can easily use with your on board DVD burner ( 'My crow sinner' $30

This card is very rich in features. The one thing that is important to know is that if you connect 16 cameras to it, and plan to view video history over the internet, ensure that you have a capable quad core processor in the PC.

The card uses the PC processor to render the video streams. When viewing video _history_ over the internet, if you don't have a quad core processor, the video history will be choppy (frames will be dropped.) This is not a negative point for this card, it just needs to be matched to the proper equipment (in this case, a capable processor.) If you don't plan on viewing video history over the internet, you can get away with a dual core (though I would not recommend it.)

Obviously, sufficient upload bandwidth is also required to view the video over the internet. The more cameras you have, the more bandwidth will be needed. To get decent FPS over the internet, plan on having at least 32KB/s of upload bandwidth per camera. For a 16 camera setup, that translates to half a megabyte per second of upload bandwidth which is more than what you get (by default) with most internet providers. 32K really is the minimum per camera. If you can get more at a reasonable cost from your ISP, don't hesitate to get it.

Also required is more than one hard drive in the PC. Have Windows on one drive and the cameras storing their video on another drive. You can get away with using only one drive (provided it is really fast) if you are only using a few cameras (say 6 or less) but, even then, there will be occasions when frames will be dropped.

The PDF manual that comes with the card is adequate (not great but not too bad.) Demonstration videos of the card capabilities are included in the CD. Plan to spend some time going over the manual, there are lots of nice features, some of which you will likely find very useful.

Conclusion: This is a very capable product, works very well when installed in a capable PC and offers lots of features. A short review like this one cannot make justice to it.

I will never buy anything from Amazon and its affiliate sellers. This company I bought the card from never responded to my concern about support for this card. Second, this card and the software included don't work. I couldn't download the driver for it. It always gives me (download fail) message. I called other Geovision websites, and they charge $39 per hour to help fix the problem. I don't recommend buying anything from this company.

I own three other DVD players and am familiar with a friend's, and none of them have performed for me quite so well as this one. Its sheer number of options in almost all aspects of DVD (and CD music) enetertainment along with flexibility in terms of control and viewing make this a great deal all on its own. Having had so much experience with other players, I had soon put this one through its paces.

The remote control is large and solid, its weight comfortable to the hand and reassuring of the quality that went into its making. The buttons are intelligently placed rather than just shoved on where they would fit and the are all of high quality and comfortable to press. After only two days of use I can already find most of the options without having to search for them, which is good since there is no sort of backlighting or glow in the dark plastic.

Advancing to different tracks on the DVD is very fast, no slow down when trying to access the next scene like I have sometimes seen with cheaper players. The rewind and forward buttons are part of the flexibility I previously mentioned. There is the option to SCAN the disc with multiple speeds x3 as well as a push and release SEARCH for when you just want to scan back a few seconds. This way you aren't bothered pressing the SCAN button then rushing to press the PLAY to stop it. Just press and release when done.

I won't go into all the features, but it includes everything you'd expect a DVD player to have. Slow motion with multiple stepped speeds similar to the SCAN in both forward and reverse. Angles and subtitles and audio options along with shuffle, repeat, and programmed playback for listening to CDs. Time and chapter searches, noise reduction (for DVDs that tend to pixilate) and a picture sharperner/softener. The only oddly lacking feature would be the absence of a zoom button.

A nice feature that my previous DVDs didn't have is the automatic saving of settings for the DVD you're viewing. The player will save your settings for up to 50 DVDs automatically. Once you get past 50 it just overwrites the oldest one saved so that any you watch on a regular basis will always be set how you like. This way you don't have to mess with menu and audio/picture options everytime you sit down to watch a movie. There is also a 9 screen splitscreen option that you can use to speed up searches during playback, view scenes from each chapter if the DVD doesn't offer this on the menu, and view all the different angles available at once.

Audio options are many and varied, allowing not only for the selection of the number of speakers and types (front, back, center, subwoofer) but also for the size of the speakers and the distance of each from the viewer for optimal sound performance. In addition to this there are various sound setups for theater quality sound in a variety of styles. There's even an option to make your music CDs sound like you're in the best seats at a concert hall in Venice. There is even a setting for viewing DVDs at night which will keep you from having to constantly adjust the volume during the loud scenes.

There is also a DTS converter of some sort, I haven't figured out the logistics of it yet... but apparently you can achieve DTS sound without the need of a receiver that will supply such. There are also S-Video hookups for ultimate screen performance as well as YPR connections for an even better picture and more accurate colors.

There is only one thing I can really find against the player. The menus are big and rather ugly. The saving grace here is they are very easy to manipulate to do what you want quickly and get them off of your screen.

All in all this is a great DVD player, and I am very glad that the folks I talked to got me to buy this one instead of the one I had in mind. I haven't even begun to touch on all of the other keen things this player can do, but if you're not convinced by now... well, there's nothing I can do but invite you over to see this thing in action in person. You won't be disappointed.

I just replaced my SONY (DVP-S560D) for this model which is the new player that replaced my last years model. They are almost the same except for this one looks more futuristic plus a few little extras nothing major. I am a SONY guy and i can truly say after researching other DVD Players in comparison to this SONY model, This one blew the competition away! The first thing is the Built in Dolby Digital Decoder which gives your surround system that Awesome Movie Theater Sound, if you have a system with 5.1 Dolby Digital outputs. Now be sure your surround system has DOLBY DIGITAL otherwise you are spending more money on a DVD player that can only experience true Theater 5.1 (Dolby Digital) Sound with a DOLBY DIGITAL Receiver. For those True MOVIE DIE-HARD Fans who are wondering if this has DTS outputs for the best possible and that exact theater sound, Yes it does. These are just some of the stand out features that i really appreciate! This is my first DVD player, but could never justify buying one to play on my 25" TV. I finally bumped up to a Sony Wega 32", which is also SWEET. This Sony DVD player is packed with features and tweaks. Having a built in Dolby Digital decoder is great, but what makes it stand out is that you can actually tweak all the six speakers. I already had a digital ready Sony receiver so the setup was pretty simple. The sound and picture that this player produces is amazing and sometimes scary. I picked up the phone a couple time, and I swear my doorbell rang:) With excellent sound production and an amazing picture, makes it a great buy at a good price.

I've had this dvd player for about 2 months now. In my opinion, this is an excellent choice. It works beautifully, the remote is easy to figure out, and hooking it up was simple. I'm an electronics idiot, so you know it had to be easy (I just figured out how to set the time on my vcr). I just can't say enough good things about this model. I've yet to come across anything I don't like. This is certainly not the only dvd player in the world, and I'm sure that many of the other models are just as good. I looked at several models (all were about the same price) and I selected this one. To be fair, I picked it because it was a Sony, no offence to any of the other fine electronics brands. It's a sweet deal, it works great, it's easy to use and of course the picture and sound are simply stunning. What else could you ask for (within reason). I'm sure that I haven't put this player through the paces and tried everything on it. All I do is watch dvd movies, and it does that perfectly. Don't hesitate to buy one of these sight unseen. I think that this is a popular model so if you want to see one in real life just go to an electronics store. If you buy one, you won't be sorry.

My wife and I were recently given a "hand-me-down" Nakamichi receiver. The receiver is in good shape and has great sound quality, so it was too good to pass up. Unfortunately, it is about 4 years old and lacks Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding. The logical solution was to find a DVD player that would decode the audio before it gets to the receiver, and after a bit of online research we converted part of our tax return into a Sony DVP-NS400D.

We have had this unit for almost two months, and have watched a number of different movies and listened to many CD's on it. So far, the results have been impressive in terms of video and audio quality, as well as ease of use. However, there are a few things anyone looking at this unit should consider:

1) This DVD player is a great match for anyone who has an older receiver that lacks Dolby 5.1 decoding, but the decoding feature is basically useless if you have a newer receiver that already has decoding capabilities. In this case, a cheaper dvd player without this feature would probably work just as well for you.

2) This DVD player WILL play CD-R's and CD-RW's, but it can be picky. For best results, use decent media and do not try to burn them at full speed.

3) This DVD player does NOT support SACD's or mp3's. Since there are almost no SACD's out there yet and the poor quality of most mp3's is even more apparent on a good sound system, these do not seem to be very important omissions. However, consider yourself warned.

If you have a high-end television that would benefit from progressive scan or a newer receiver that can do it's own Dolby decoding, then you should look elsewhere. Otherwise, I highly recommend the Sony DVP-NS400D as a good performer for a reasonable price.

Wireless Infrared Motion Night Vision Network Color Camera Pan & Tilt, 2-way audio

Software to set them up is pretty cruddy. If you do anything beyond the standard configuration, you're in for some frustration. You need a college degree in computer science to get these cameras to work through a home router's firewall so you can access the camera via the internet from anywhere. (I gave up trying.) You can't use it outside as any bush that moves in the wind seems to trigger the motion detection. Although I don't understand the motion detection as it will trigger video capture 25 times in a day, but it won't capture me walking directly in front of the camera and waving at it?! When I was setting it up, it seemed to work much better inside the house with the wireless camera unit much closer to my wireless router. So it you have simple requirements (watching a dog play during the day?) it would work for that.

I received this camera Mustek DV326l a couple of years ago as a promotional gift from my bank, Bank of America. I didn't have a camera or the money to buy on so I was quit pleased at first to get it. And things got better from there. I have become a photographer. The camera is simple but effective. I have a large capacity chip in the little card slot in the bottom of the camera and can take literally thousands of pictures and hours of video. I bought a lite weight tripod for it for about 10 dollars that improves stability but I don't use it unless I am doing staged photos or videos. I have also used it as a webcam for my computer and can down load pictures to my computer this way or by removing the chip and downloading from it.

I joined a local photography club. I appologized for the humble little camera I have and was told that the eye of the person behind the camera is more important than the type of camera.

I could prase this camera more but I will leave off now.

the only thing that's a disappointment is it runs off of batteries but i geuss it doesn't matter depends on how often you use this. its a great size for small hands. for my husband it barely fits his hand. i bought this to record major events in my childrens lives so that they have the memory when they're older. love it.

First of all, let me say that this unit is very well worth the money. As "just a dvd player" I give it FIVE over FIVE points (or ten/ten if you wish).

The unit comes locked for Region 1 DVDs, but can be easily unlocked (just google for the asnwer) to make it region-free. I have tested my unit purchased on amazon.com and unlocked with Region 1, region 2 dvds purchased from Britain, and region 4 DVDs purchased in South America. It just works.

The unit's COMPONENT-VIDEO output is superb, even if you use an CRT TV. I recommend you get a quality component video cable and use that instead of the "composite video" output.

When playing MPG and AVI files, the component video output shows pixelation and artifacts on low-quality or low-resolution avi/divx/mpg files, but when playing back the same files and switching the tv to component video, these problems go away!.

Component video, it should be noted, is superior to "s-video" (which just separates color information from luminance), as each basic color (Red-Green-Blue) travels on a separate shielded cable.

Now, the "extras" besides basic DVD playback

1. DIVX and XVID are supported. But some .avi files will play back with NO SOUND if the original file was encoded with a "codec" (compression algorithm) that is not supported by this unit. Just because a file plays back ok on your PC with "Windows Media Player" it doesn't mean it will playback in this unit.

2. DVD-R media *IS* supported. You might need, however, to update the firmware (it's available for download from the philips.com web site. You have to download a .iso image, burn the data to a cd-r, press a key combination on the remote and then insert the cd-r disc).

Now the problems:

1. Even while DivX is supported, mpeg4/divx files compressed with the Divx Pro software using the "QPEL" (advanced motion optimization and prediction) will NOT PLAY on the unit. The unit will display an ugly "QPEL CODEC NOT SUPPORTED" message and stop there. There's no way to play back QPEL encoded files on this unit (it would require a much faster processor inside).

2. ZOOM LEVELS ARE INCONSISTENT. On DVD movies, zoom levels featured are 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 4x. However when you are playing back ".avi" (mpeg4/divx) files, you will find that often the only zoom levels available are "normal" (no zoom) and "2x", and that's it!. There is no 1.5x zoom level when paying back mpg and divx files! So forget about watching that wide-screen (4:3 format) movie in full screen by switching to 1.5x zoom mode. If it's a DVD movie you can. But if it's a DivX/MPEG4 movie you can't!.

3. A-B loop doesn't work most of the time on DivX/AVI files. Sometimes, when it does work, after you selct an a-b loop, you turn the feature off by pressing the a-b key once again, and when you want to create another a-b loop, the feature no longer works! (unless you press STOP and PLAY the file once again). VERY annoying.

4. PHILIPS doesn't seem very interested in updating the firmware. The last update is dated May 2004, and there has been no update since then, even while the number of bugs is high (see above).

However, even after all this, I think that for ~$70 dollars or less including Amazon.com's free ground shipping, you can't go wrong with this unit, as DVD playback is superb, and the ability to play most (but not all!) .mpg / .avi (DivX/MPEG4/Xvid) video files is just a nice extra to have in there as a "bonus".

Burning .avi and mpg files to DVD recordable media also works.

This review is for Philips DVP642 DVD Player. It is the same as DVP642/37 DVD Player. It is also the same as DVP642/37 Code Free DVD Player, or Region Free, or whatever else you want to call it. Philips has ONLY ONE DVP642 model, but it may come with different firmware versions, depending on when and where the player was purchased. It doesn't matter though. I repeat, it is the SAME player. So there is absolutely no need to pay extra dollars for something you can easily do yourself. This review highlights some of the features of this DVD player, as well as provides instructions on how to make it Region Free (pay special attention to Format Support section). So, read on...

Let me just start by saying that if this DVD player was anything over $100, even $80, then I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But it's definitely worth $50 that I spent on it. I bought it on sale at CompUSA. I believe Walmart is the cheapest place now, where you can buy it for just under $60. But back to this player. After using it for over 2 months, and having it compare to my other three DVD players (Sampo, Cyberhome, and Oppo), I have come up with a short list of Pros and Cons. So, without further ado, I give you Philips DVP642:

PROS:

Format Support This alone probably worth all the "stars". It supports virtually all formats, including Divx. And it DOES support DVD-R's as well, although it's not documented anywhere. MP3's, Picture JPEG's, original DVD's, burned DVD's with AVI's, MPEG's, etc. I have tried it all, and it handled everything without any problems. Add the NTSC/PAL conversion capabilities to that (simple "7 8 9 OK 0" remote control hack with an open tray will make it "region free"), and you've got yourself one hell of a DVD player. "You have it, we play it" is the slogan of this player, and it is, indeed, true.

Design I like the nice and sleek design of this DVD player. It's thin, and the nice matte silver color nicely compliments my Sony Wega TV that I connected it to.

Price Just as I mentioned before, I bought this player for $50. I think it's well worth it, especially if you have a lot of "homemade" DVD's.

CONS:

Picture Quality One word to describe it Average... at best. My 5 year old Sampo produces a better picture using S-Video, and without Progressive Scan. Cyberhome is better too, when using component connection. I'm not even going to mention Oppo.

Support One of the worst I have ever had to deal with. First of all, Philips website has very minimum information about this player, and not a word about firmware updates. I've tried to contact them by phone, but only wasted my time pressing buttons and holding for "available representative". I finally decided to send them an e-mail, but have yet to get a response back after two weeks of waiting period.

Summary:

If picture quality is what you are mostly looking for in your DVD player then this one is not for you (if you own or planning on buying an HDTV with DVI or HDMI inputs, then I strongly suggest you check out OPPO). On the other side, if you are not too picky about picture output, but do care about various format support, and don't want to spend too much money, then this player certainly makes a good choice.

This is not the best DVD player ever for picture quality etc, but it is Region Free. It will play PAL discs to my NTSC TV. I got it as a Christmas Present and I immediately ordered Blake's 7 from Amazon.co.uk and it plays just fine. You can tell that it had been opened and adjusted, but it was put neatly back into the box and I have not had any problems with it. It also plays all my other Region 1 disks as well (including Region Code Enhanced disks) so if you aren't too particualar about the quality (which is not terrible) you could probably just use this player for all you DVD playing. For me it will do to play my non-region one discs, but I'll keep my Sony for Region 1 stuff. I am very pleased with this product.

Just tried out this Phillips player with DVDs ordered in France and from Hong-Kong. Works great, good picture and no problems. Can't understand why reviewer Susanne Heidt of Los Angeles said she had problems -in spite of what the manual says, this player works fine on other Region/Code DVDs.

I bought this player about 6 months ago for our bedroom as a backup player to the Sony in the den. We have played less than 10 DVD's on it and it is now dead. When I put a DVD in, it comes back with the "No Disc" message. I have tried numerous DVD's and they all give the same message. It will play CD's. I did some research on the internet and it seems this is a fairly common problem. I also read somewhere that you could bump it while loading and it would play. I tried that and got it to work once so I am guessing something is just out of line.

Anyway, I called Philips over the weekend and after going through their standard troubleshooting script, they informed me it was out of warranty but could be exchanged for a fee. As I discovered, the warranty is only 90 days free replacement. From 91 days to a year, there is an exchange program for a fee. I guess I should have known the warranty was only 90 days but I never even looked at the warranty. In my experience, if electronics work out of the box, they don't fail in 90 days. I now realize that is true for quality electronics but not Philips electronics. I asked how much the fee was and the lady said the fee was not listed on her sheet. She gave me a claim number and told me to call back on Monday. I called on Monday and went thru a similar experience. This time the lady put me on hold to call the RMA department to get the fee. After three attempts (the line was busy), I asked to be transferred to a supervisor. The supervisor came on the line and I explained the situation to him and asked for consideration on the warranty. He said there was no flexibility or exceptions with the warranty. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the product and lack of consideration. I then asked to speak to someone higher up in management. He flatly refused to provide me with any other contact information. He said it was his department's job to "give the bad news to the customer" and not to pass them on up the chain. He then asked if I was interested in paying the fee or not. I asked him how much it was. He said they had still not gotten in touch with the RMA department because the line was still busy. He seemed oblivious to the significance of a long wait for someone in RMA. He told me he would try to get in touch with them by at least tomorrow. Obviously they are having more product problems than they can effectively handle.

From the other reviews on here, apparently this is a pretty good player when it works. I wouldn't know since I only played a few DVD's with it. My advice is to avoid any products from Philips, especially this one. With their short warranty and lousy customer service, it's obviously a gamble doing business with them. Electronics should last years, not days.

PS..Almost forgot. When I was talking to the Philips customer care representative, he asked me where I bought it. I told him Amazon. He then went on to tell me that when you buy Philips products online from places like Amazon and Overstock that you are buying refurbished units. I told him it was advertised as new and that I knew Amazon would not misrepresent the product. Amazon had also shipped it to me within 2 months of the manufactured date so I didn't believe him. He just repeated his statement. I called Amazon after getting off the phone with Philips. The Amazon customer care rep was very friendly, professional and assured me the product they shipped was new and she did not know why Philips would be saying that. I also must add what a contrast in customer care experiences between Amazon and Philips in the span of 10 minutes.

If you are using any other Tivo remote, you owe it to yourself to get one of these. Tired of fumbling with your old Tivo remote's soft spongy buttons that don't seem to quite do the job even when you are super careful to press the buttons firmly? I thought so. (And if your remote's buttons haven't developed that spongy feeling yet, just wait. It will.) This remote beats the old ones hands down. When you press a button there is a tactile click to let you know that contact has been made. The remote feels great in the hand, although not substantially different from the older models except for a texture on the bottom of the remote that lets you know which end you've got ahold of. This is a great feature. The backlight is great too.

There are a couple of issues with this model however. First of all, they switched the position of the "Thumbs" and volume/channel buttons, which was a pretty dumb idea. Volume and Channel were much better positioned on the old remote, just above the pause & play buttons. They are still within reach on this newer model, but this seems like a pointless change. The intent was to make the thumbs up/down easier to get to, but honestly, once you've had a Tivo for a couple of months, how often do you really use the thumbs?

The other nit with this device is that it uses 4 AAA batteries instead of 2 AA's like the older model. Not such a big deal in and of itself, but battery life seems considerably shorter. Not that you'll be running out for batteries every month or anything. I'd say they last at least 6 months for a heavily used unit. (When the remote starts responding intermittently, change the batteries). But compared to the older remotes that could go years on a set of AA's, the new model is a step backward, albeit just a little one.

Despite its faults, this is still a great remote. It works perfectly with older TIVO models. I have not tested on the Series 1, but the Series 2 remote works with the Series 1 and these work fine with Series 2, so if you still have a Series 1, you're probably in good shape. This remote also works perfectly with the Humax and Toshiba DVD burner Tivo's.

Works perfectly every time. In addition to controlling my Series3 HD TiVo, I use it to drive my Sony CRT televisions throughout the house. It looks so beautiful next to the other remotes. So finely weight balanced and light, you almost can't feel you are holding it. Love the "big pause" button in the middle. I am going to buy two more of these for around the house.

One nitpick.. The Glo remote is not very bright -But much better than no glow at all. I also wish I could control my TiVo with RF instead of I/R.

This is a great product for a great price. The Glo remote is great in a dim or dark room. The buttons are better than the stock remote as well. Better placement, better quality, and better feel.

I finally purchased one of these and couldn't be happier. I've been a Tivo user since they first came out and am on my third box now. As such, the standard Tivo "peanut" remote has become like an extension of my hand. I never have to look at it, every button is right where I expect it to be.

Last year I bought a new television and home theater system that didn't have remote codes for the standard Tivo remote.

I bought three different universal remotes and they all worked, but I didn't like they way they feel. I don't tend to return items, so they're all just sitting in an end table.

After unboxing the "Premium Glo" remote and finding 4 AAA batteries to throw in it, I had my TV's power and input as well as my receiver's power and volume programmed in literally under a minute. I programmed my receiver's power to the mute button on the Glo remote. I still need the receiver remote around, but I don't have to touch it to turn everything on and start watching TV/Tivo. Excellent!

The buttons are spaced slightly different than the original Tivo remote, but I got used to that in a few days. The button feel is also a little different but I like it. Yes the buttons glow after you touch one when it's dark. I could care less and I'm glad you can turn that feature off.

If there were Cons, this would be them: I don't have that many gadgets that take AAA's so I tend not to keep those around, now I'm going to have to. The shiny rather than textured surface of the plastic attracts fingerprints, not that I care, but maybe that's important to you. The button placement and feel might be a negative to someone who REALLY, REALLY doesn't want a change from the original Tivo remote. It's @ $50, which is expensive for a non-universal remote, meaning, it doesn't fully replace all my remotes.

I like it, it nets out to taking one more remote(TV) off the coffee table, and I get to keep my Tivo remote shape, size, and feel. That's worth $50 for me, and if it's the same for you, you'll like it too.

I don't expect an electronic item to last forever but I certainly expect more than one year. I purchased the complete 4-Camera QSee Package from a local store in Trinidad, after 10 months two cameras failed. The option to return only the cameras was not available from the supplier, and it was too much of a hassle to pull down all the wiring to return the entire unit. So, I chose to buy two replacement cameras at Amazon.

The replacement of the defective cameras were a snap, and I must add that the picture quality of the ones I bought were far better than the ones originally supplied. But here I am after 16 months writing a (poor) review of their life kaput goes another camera!

I would not recommend this product to anyone who is thinking about a camera system. It is cheaper the most other security systems and that is exactly what it is ... cheap!

I give 2 stars one for each year of service!

When I received these cameras, I already had two wireless security cameras installed at my home. I really did not think having wired cameras would be much of an issue. I was so wrong! Wired cameras are such a headache to install and do not offer the versatility of a wireless camera and though these cameras come with 60 ft of wiring... for my house that was not near enough. Moreover, the picture quality was not what I would call high quality and the night vision was disappointing as well. Needless to say, if you are looking for inexpensive cameras with sub-par video quality for the sake of perhaps deterring a potential criminal then these are the way to go. If you want a security system that creates a picture or video where you can actually identify all in it, this is not the camera for you.

Emerson EME-NR303TTC 4-in-1 Vintage Classic Turntable Real Wood Stereo System with AM/FM Radio, CD,

I liked its design (appearance) and the fact that it could play just about any media I own, from vinyl to CDs. I plugged it in and turned on the radio sounded good and got good reception, even of hard-to-get stations. Put in a CD could not read three out of four discs. I popped in a tape noticeable deterioration of sound quality. Ah well. I put on a record sound quality plummeted! At that point it sounded like distant music broadcast from a tin can. Since I'd bought it primarily to play records, I returned it to the store the next day.

The turntable sounds tinny. The CD player worked great for the first day, then the "Open" button wouldn't work on the second day. Returned it to the store the third day.

They don't make them like they used to they just make them look like they make them like they used to.

Come to think of it, I've bought a number of Emerson products over the years, and I've regretted every purchase but one. No more for me thanks.

This little unit is a nice find. The radio and cd play nicely and the sound is good. I have yet to play a tape in my unit. The record player sound isn't quite clear and sharp but at least it plays my records which I have been purchasing on Ebay. Previous reviewer ELENDEREL sums it up pretty well, "I put on a record sound quality plummeted! At that point it sounded like distant music broadcast from a tin can." Oh my God, I am still laughing because its somewhat true. But didn't all record players sound like that? I have an IPOD and a speaker system hooked up but I wanted this little unit to remind me when I was a kid and jamming to my 'Funkytown' & 'Girls Just wanna have fun' records. My only complaint is, (and I have yet to call Emerson to ask them) is that it cuts off a few songs before they are done like my Stevie Wonder 45, "I just Called to Say I love You." That 45 is over 4 minutes long so I don't know if that is the case when the needle comes up and returns to its stand. On a shorter song it played the whole tune. I pd 89.99 and got 10% off with a coupon so I think and hope it was a good deal. The records I guess do sound like it was coming from a tin can but I was a kid so I don't remember how great the quality was back then and I doubt I had a high quality system even then. Hope this helps.

Love the product!

What I like most is that it has a HeadPhone Jack (which most others don't have) which I can plug into my computer (in-line) port and capture Vinyl, CD and Cassette music to convert to MP3 format.

It works great! The sound quality is what I expect from both cassette and vinyl.

I use my computer CD player to capture CD's for better quality, but it would work if it's all you have.

Sony 50CDQ80RS 80 Minute 700 MB 48x CD-R 50 Pack Spindle

I must admit. I ignored the previous review by Jon in Florida, and went ahead and bought these CD's thinking Sony is a quality company, so they can't ALL be bad. Well, I think I topped his 65% failure rate. The first 8 CD-R's I tried all had errors! I've gone thru hundreds of competing brand CD-R's with maybe 1 or 2 failures. This is ridiculous. I've used cheap CD-R's before, and you pay the price. I would classify these as cheap.

I'm only writing this review for a couple reasons... One is to balance the negative reviews and shed some light on CD-Rs, but first to clarify an issue that had me concerned.

I have used Sony CD-Rs for years with no issues. Pretty close to 100% success, so I was concerned when I saw these RED & BLACK packages when I was used to the YELLOW wrappers. I checked on the reviews on Amazon and read all the negative points, I thought maybe Sony had changed their CD-Rs. Well, I'm happy to say, they just changed their packaging. The CD-Rs inside appear exactly the same and perform just as well. So if your questioning if these are the same Sony CD-Rs you've been using all along, they are... I just burned music on 5 discs in a row without a single reject.

Now, I have a thought as to why there are so many negative reviews. When I bought a DVD recorder to add to my TV and VCR, I remember reading that they recommended certain DVD-R manufacturer's for recording. Not all manufacturer's worked for all DVD recorders. I've been using Sony CD-Rs for several years now in MY burner with darn near 100% success. The music I burned back in 2004 sounds as good as the discs I've burned yesterday. And yet, I tried a couple other CD-R manufacturers in the past with about a 60% success rate. I've tried Maxell, Staples, Maxwell and some others. None worked as well as Sony. Many of these manufacturers have been rated very high by the same reviewers that are hating on the Sonys. Could it be Maxell works better in THEIR brand of CD burner? I think so. My suggestion, stick with the name brands. When you try a name brand for the first time, buy in small quantity. Once you learn of a brand or two that works, STICK WITH them. I love to bargain hunt as much as the next guy, but I can't afford the $$ and time to mess with reject CD-Rs.

Now I only buy Sony, not because I'm a Sony homer, but just because they are the only brand that works consistently FOR ME, IN MY BURNER. It may not work as well for you, but they are worth a try.

I am furious how many Sony's CDRs I have replaced. They are the absolute worst product out there. I don't know how such a great electronic company would leak such low quality, unreliable CD-R. The problem I have with Sony is overtime the CDs become unreadable. It said not MS-dos error or something when you try to copy the data, basically it become unreadable. The surface of Sony CDR is a smooth pearl. After 1-2 years they start to fake off on the edge like watermark. Not because of careless, but of the CDR surface quality. Other cheaper CDR I have for 3 years (storage in the same location as the Sony's CDR) are still readable and don't fake. I lost some important data with at least 4 Sony's CDR. The files at the outer edge are affected the most.

I though the smooth pearl color of Sony was very pleasing compare to other ugly blank CDR. TDK is now my CDR of choice now. It has a clean look and it CDRs are more readable on any cd-rom then Sony. I am in a progress of reburning all data that are on the Sony to TDK. Again, Warning: Do not buy Sony's CDR.

I bought the exact same spindle at office depot, for only 5 dollars (I now know why they were so cheap). I have a 32x burner and tried to burn several at that speed (the cd's are supposed to be 48x compatible) none of them were readable. I had to burn at 4x for any of the cd's to work! I would suggest instead buying Memorex, I've found spindles of 50 cd's for $10 in some stores, and I've never had a single bad cd. I'm surprised by the quality of Sony's cds especially since I've read elsewhere that they are supposed high quality.

I go through a spindle every few weeks, so I've used just about every brand. I bought these Sony's for the first time a week ago, and I can say without a doubt I have never had more discs error during the burn process. Approximately 65% of my burns have failed with these. This is not at all what I've come to expect from this company.

I am mildly computer saavy, and this product seemed fairly easy to setup. I wasn't getting a video, and once I contacted the seller, they set me up with amazing customer service. He walked me through everything, and we realized that my cameras came unplugged. Loving the quality and the help!!!! Very satisfied!!!

I initially had a kguard dvr and camera set and the quality was pretty bad on the recorded and streaming video. I took those cameras and put them on this dvr and it was night and day. Crank up all the quality settings and bask in the glory of this thing. It's got all kinds of great configuration options and the motion masking tool is easy to use. My only complaint is that the hard drive was not well secured inside the unit. Other than that it's an incredible deal. I'm going to pair it with some even better cameras and really go nuts.

The camera is very well built, weatherproof, has a movable sun screen and works as expected for 420 TV line resolution camera. This camera is a great value for the money and the price just came down to boot. It is mounted in a high exposed location where the coverage of the 3.6mm lens provides a semi wide angle view. The 28 LED provide adequate illumination for a distance of about 35 feet. It may work at a greater distance but that is distance in my installation. The cables exit the camera out of the center of the back so there is no real way to protect them from vandalism at this point. The camera comes with a 100 foot cable 1/8 of an inch in diameter and a power supply. This cable was used in initial testing of the camera and it worked OK but I would not use this cable in the actual permanent installation because it appears too fragile. Too many bad reviews of small cables even though his one may be OK I will not take a chance. It takes hours to install the cables in my installation. If the cable fails because I stepped on it or bent it wrong it would be a major job to replace. I used full size RG59 Siamese cable with 95% shielding and 2-18 gage solid copper power lines. Camera gets a 5 star but as a set with the cable it is a 4 star.

Though I've odered many times with Amazon, this is the first time I have been excited enough to review a product! I'm an adult who wants to learn guitar for fun and didn't want to play "Mary had a little lamb" and scales for months. I have only used the software for about an hour, and have already been playing parts of songs I actually like! I have been playing guitar for a total of one week prior to receiving this (without any instruction).This is perfect if you don't have the patience or desire to learn the traditional way. I wish I had this when I was 14, I would have loved it.

I can't vouch for the whole thing yet, since I've only played with it for an hour, so I give it 4 stars instead of five. From what I've seen I have no reason to expect that it will let me down and highly recommend it.

I found this to be a very good teaching tool to learn to play rock style music. I have never played the guitar before only the violin for eight years while in school. Now I am in my thirties and thought it would be too difficult to learn to play. I have been through the first four lessons and so far it is great. I can work at my own pace, repeat sections I find difficult and play actual songs with lyrics. It is great to play real music not just practice the chords and riffs (although practice is required, it is just more fun). Great piece of sofware. I combined this with a couple of books to study when not at the computer and this worked great for me. Great job eMedia. I look forwrard to additional eMedia song books for rock music.

I picked this up for my twelve year old son. He is a beginner and has been glued to his electric guitar and eMedia Rock Guitar Method for the last two weeks. The program is a great starter, just in case the kids don't stick with it. It's better than $45 bucks an hour once a week, for now, at least.

I began with eMedia's beginner CD-ROM and next moved to the Rock Guitar. One of the things I enjoyed most about the former was that it taught lessons with entire songs. However, in Rock Guitar, you only learn bits and pieces of songs--and fewer ones at that. Many are not titled songs, but something like "a Nirvana-like song." So if you loved the amount of music on the beginner CD, you may be a little dissatisfied. Additionally, some chords are taught with different fingering than in the beginner CD.

All in all, I learn very quickly with emedia. I really enjoy playing along to their riffs and pieces of songs. Putting the voice to the songs to play with is probably my favorite feature (don't tell anybody that I sing along while playing in the privacy of my room).

This is certainly a really great step towards learning the basics of rock guitar, but should not be your first eMedia CD-ROM (buy the beginner one first!).

This is way better than the eMedia Guitar Basics CD-ROM because you actually know what the songs are supposed to sound like when you play them. They have rock songs that you've heard before, unlike the "folk" songs and spirituals that Guitar Basics teaches you.

Unfortunately this does not work with Windows Vista, so I have to use it on a computer that uses XP.

Contrary to the experiences of a couple of the other reviewers, I have had no trouble getting this unit to hold my 7" Lilliput 668 monitor. In fact, the exact ballhead comes with the monitor. The Lilliput 668 might be 2lbs at the most, and regardless of the angle, this ballhead has held fine. Perhaps the other reviewer's monitors were heavier. Also note that the 7" monitor is the heaviest thing I use this item for. Everything else are 160 LED panels, flash heads, mics, or field recorders, all of which don't exceed 1lb. I also purchased Giotto's mini ballhead that is rated for 4+lbs. In comparison, the Giotto might be a little heavier duty, but for very lightweight uses, the ePhoto is much smoother and easier to adjust. I purchased these to replace the crappy ballheads that came with my Chromo 160 LED Panel. An otherwise nice light panel, just comes with a very breakable ballhead. The ePhoto has worked brilliantly as a replacement.

For the price of this I was expecting a cheap plastic unit, but this has weight and performs without issue holding my monitor easily and providing no issues what so ever. I had the IKAN version of this and it was much worse. This is just proof that ephoto does have some very worthwhile products, just do your research before buying. Highly recommended.

I use this to replace the plasic hot shoe mount for my LED light, works great, the ball can be moved even when tightened down but I don't think it was meant to hold much weight any way.

PERFECT for holding a lightweight flash and softbox attached to it, but nothing more. It does exactly what it is supposed to and does it well!

I second the experience as expressed by some other users. Does not hold my Haier monitor over the camera at an angle. The monitor starts to slip and eventually goes flat down to an unwanted position. Presently looking for a $20 "Vello" Adapter holding up to 4 lbs to see if it will work better. this was specially needed for a 550D which does not have a swivel screen built in, to use an external Haier monitor. It did not work out well.

These things should have a lock to lock in position
