GE 24116 Universal LED Backlit Remote Control, 4-Device, Infrared Black

I had first purchased a 2-pack universal remote made by Phillips; 1 was a 3-function, the other a 6-function. Thought it was a great deal and the 6-function remote was advertised as illuminated. Well, the illuminated part was only the number pad and because both remotes were black-on-black (black buttons on a matte-black controller)with small navigation buttons they were difficult to see & manipulate. Purchased this GE instead and was instantly pleased. The remote is a shiny black with large blue buttons (better contrast for easy viewing) that light-up automatically for 30 seconds when any button is pushed; or you can press a back-light button at anytime to light it up. I have both arthritis & farsighted vision so this remote is a lifesaver! Because the buttons are large and blue, the remote is a treat to use even without the back-lighting. Also like that the function buttons are laid out intuitively so that I don't have to search all over for oft-used buttons. In addition, set-up took only seconds on an 11-year old Magnavox t.v. using the code provided in the instruction manual (haven't yet tried programing my DVD player although this 4-function remote can also be used for DVD, DVR, & cable boxes). The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of five is that the remote is not as ergonimically designed grip-wise as the Phillips or some others, but that is a very small drawback when overall it outshines other universal & even OEM remotes.

Works goodfor the price a great deal. I brought it because it's lights up when needed. I brought it for a TV that I purchased second hand and didn't come with a remote.

I bought this remote tonight since it's a bit hard to see certain buttons on my other Sony remote. It lights up great but it will not operate the play and stop buttons for my Sony home theatre system. That is the only major bummer here, and it sucks in that respect. I guess I shall take it back and just forget about it!

I had one almost identical to this one for years. The backlight is bright and the keys are very responsive.

There is only one small drawback that prevents me from giving it the highest rating possible. The keys do what they are supposed to do, but the "Last" channel button doesn't work as the other one I owned did.

Hitting the "Last" channel button was very convenient, but this tiny drawback isn't a really important issue. The buttons are a little different because this model has icons on the keypad rather than text, which is a plus.

I hate it when I buy something that works beautifully, but when it finally fails, the original item is usually no longer available. I resorted to doing what I generally do when I find something I like. I ordered three of them and now I can have what I like for years to come without the item not being available in the future.

I bought one of these remotes about a year ago from a local store, rhymes with Lig Bots, for my Akai 42 inch tv. It worked just as it should, and still does. I was delighted. Then last month I ordered what I thought was the same exact remote from Amazon. When it came, it looked exactly like the one I bought earlier. I tried all the codes for my Akai listed in the manual, and only found one code that halfway worked, but it had many of the functions on the wrong buttons, and others that wouldn't work at all.

Obviously, GE has made changes in this remote while still maintaining the same looks, but changing the internal programing.

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and fork over the big bucks for a Harmony remote. I sure am sorry this one did not work like the discount store one does. Still, at the low cost here on Amazon, I'm O.K. with my purchase.
