Bought this because it's 720p and takes batteries (I'm tired of charging Lithiums.) It's quick and makes good video in bright light. No zoom except digital. No optical stabilization digital only. When the light changes, the iris' adjustments are sudden and noticeable in finished video. Controls are confusing but give you enough choices. No way to plug in microphones; you're stuck with the on-camera mic which will pick up every hand twitch. Battery life (4 AAAs) is roughly two hours before it quits. Software very confusing and limited. On a PC you can burn AVCHD DVDs which play in some BluRays that's nice. If you want to save video as files for editing in software other than that provided, you'll be working hard to find ways to convert them. Basically a box camera that shoots HD video but requires some effort to prepare to edit. For the price, I'm satisfied. (Includes NO software for Mac.)
The macro function (a switch near the lens seems to move the lens a little to change the focus depth) works pretty well for close-up shots of small objects, although with the fixed-focus lens you have to move the camera closer or farther from the object being photographed in order to get a good focus. Thanks to the zoom, however, you can keep the object framed just how you like it once you get it focused.
The 8x digital zoom is impressive, and the stabilization feature comes in very handy when you're taking still shots at full zoom.
The OS list in the description above is just for the included software, not the camera. I plugged it in to my Ubuntu Linux computer, and it worked just fine. It appeared in my /media folder, and I was able to access the videos and images in the camera. The camera appears as one external drive whether you have an SD card loaded or not, only the size of the external drive changes depending on the SD card. One downside, when you plug the camera in to your computer, you need to open the LCD screen to turn on the camera and set the connection. A separate button or something would have been better in my opinion. I like that the videos are saved as .AVI instead of some weird proprietary format that requires the included software to work with.
The camera ships with 4 AAA batteries, yet it has contacts in the battery compartment for an optional rechargeable Li-Ion battery (NP60, pretty cheap here on Amazon) for longer life. It does not appear that plugging the camera in to the USB port on your computer will charge the battery, yet it does provide power to the camera when the batteries are removed.
The menu for changing settings is pretty basic. Almost everything is displayed as icons. You will need to consult the user manual to decipher what each icon means.
There is no flash on this camera, yet there is a light under the lens that you can toggle on and off as needed in both video and still modes.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with this camera so far.

We were given this camera as a wedding present and we totally love it! It takes way better pictures than either of our cameras, even when you zoom in really close. It's only downfall is that it doesn't have a flash when taking pictures, just an illumination light in the front. But, the intent of this camera is for video, the still camera is just a bonus. Most of the time, it can draw enough light to where you don't need the flash. The video quality and features are nice, but the reason why I'm giving this camera a 2 star is because of the annoying squeal when playing back a video and the amount of energy the camera drains from the batteries, which takes 4 AAA's. I hear the squeal when I play a video from the camera or computer. I have Ubuntu Linux, so editing HD videos is easy for me since the file is compatible with my editor. I also couldn't find a firmware update for the camera to see if it would fix the squeal.Save 37% Off
