I bought this to replace a Philips DVP5990 player which had quit working. This model plays USB drives, a feature I wanted.

I like this player a lot. It is smaller than the Philips, seems more solid, and accepts and releases disks more quickly. My wife thinks the picture is better. I think the sound is better. The remote is sturdier, and operates more easily and from a greater distance than the Philips without requiring that you point directly at the unit. The remote operated our Sony TV set without requiring any adjustments from me. I find this convenient sometimes for turning on the TV or changing the TV input to be our receiver. The remote will operate TVs from other manufacturers also.

The player is very small. You will probably not be putting another piece of equipment on top of it. There are controls and display lights on the top surface of the player, at the front right. I like this placement.

There are two negatives in comparison to the Philips: 1) there is no display, so you must bring up the control menu on the TV screen to know what track you are on and how much time is left; and 2) when you are playing from the USB drive, the unit shows only a single-level display of folders, regardless of what kind of hierarchy you've created on the USB drive. This second item is a significant issue for me. However I can't see deducting a star for this, in view of the major virtues of the drive and the very low price.

The package included two power adapters that work in U.S. sockets. Apparently one of the other reviewers did not receive these. It's too bad he rated the player so low because of this, when the problem was not with the player itself.

Since this is a Sony I'm expecting it to have a nice long life.

I picked this up from Worldwide Distributors, so I can't vouch for other Marketplace sellers.

In saying that, this DVD player is brilliant. The size and weight are smaller than I'd expect from Sony, but the quality is all there.

A snap-on North American power adapter was included in the box, so getting this set up was pretty simple. As someone else pointed out, the default menu language appeared to be Spanish (maybe Portuguese?) but switching it in to English only took a minute. From there, I was able to easily change the default 4:3 configuration to 16:9 and make a couple of other tweaks.

Since this is just composite-out, you can't really expect upscaling or a near-HD experience. However, I found that the picture quality was excellent on domestic discs, and absolutely trounced the older Philips region-free player I've been using. In fact, this is the first region-free DVD player I've had that displays R2 discs from the UK in what appears to be a "normal" framerate and without jagged edges or other quality problems.

I seriously would have been happy if I had paid twice the price for this. If you're in the US and need to play imported DVD's, this is a no-brainer.

Great little Multi Region DVD player. Simple to set up and comes with American adapter. Instructions and display is in Spanish but it doesn't matter because it is so simple to hook up and use. So far I have been able to play DVD-R's and Pal format DVD's with no problems at all. Highly recommended.

Toshiba Camileo H30 Full HD Camcorder - Silver/Black

Taken during a nice sunny day (but not the kind of harsh very bright sunlight) about 3 pm. As you can see, colors are on the high saturation side with decent dynamic range on contrast. This camera is okay for the price and IMO gives good value for entry level full HD camcorder. It can fit in your cargo pants pocket or hoodie pocket for convenience.

CONS: Before you buy this camera make sure your video editing program either works with or can concert 1080p in AVI format. I use Pinnacle Studio HD 14 and it works well with this camcorders files but only if I video in 720p. It can't work with the 1080p files and I have to use another programs to either render to 720p or convert to 1080p mp4.

Don't buy this if you plan to use the still photos. They are very average quality (if not below) and needs optimal lighting conditions for acceptable still photos. Compared to photos taken by this camcorder, I favor photos taken with my 10 year 1.2 megapixel Fuji than the photos this one takes. But hey it's an excellent value for a camcorder and it's just an average point and shoot if used as a camera. You'll get better photos by grabbing screen frames from the full HD.

To contribute to the the review stating the video looked horrible when hooked up to his HDTV, when hooked up to mine it looks great. No distortion or pixelation at all.

If your looking for a budget HD camcorder, this is a great buy with some great features at this price. The zoom is adequate but requires a very steady hand even with image stabilization on 720P mode. Red and blues look a little over saturated but not too bad. Stills look just as good as the video but also requires a steady hand.

I gave it 4 stars based on performance for the money. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone looking for a sub $300 HD camcorder.

this is a full hd camcorder with a 5x optical zoom for $180 so be too critical on it would not be fair! it is better than the standard def jvc everio i just got rid of. it strong point that it take 10 megapixel still photos that look quite good, if you can hold the camera completely still! if not they get blurry quickly. and one thing i do not understand is that if i take hd video and put it on my computer it looks really good, but if i hook the camcorder to my 42" hdtv to veiw it looks really hideous i mean really grainy and pixelated for some reason? i have not tried to convert and burn on a dvd yet to see how they will look, but that will be my next project. the software that comes with it is ok at best! but hey it is free and is usable! so my verdict is! for youtubing this would be an excellent choice. for a videophile or someone who make their own blu ray disc's look else where because this camcorder will probably dissapoint you? and like i said the photo's and video's look really horrible on an hdtv through the hdmi port. :o)

As soon as you take this camcorder out of the box, you are going to be scurrying around trying to find random things to film with it to test it out. When you consider this camera is quite a few years old and the incredible price for the feature it offers, surely the quality must be terrible. After taking the time walk around my house with it and test it on random things for the past few weeks I must say, I am really impressed. The camera is not going to shoot the same quality you would see in a professional movie which is to be expected. The image stabilization only works in the 720P mode and not the 1080P modes, however 720P looks just as good in almost all scenarios so this does not bother me very much. The fact that the camera comes with a mini hdmi to hdmi cable is pretty awesome. You could easily spend 20 bucks on one. I am using an 8GB sd card with the camera and it is working very well. The camera does struggle in dark lighting. It works in dark lighting but things like details on something that is painted black or brown are going to be lost. When using the camera in the middle of the day it really excells. The slow motion feature is pretty cool to play around with. If you have never owned a camcorder before and you are considering one, look no further.

I didn't buy this here on Amazon, just at my local Home Depot. Its seems like quality construction, metal around the sides and top; the bottom is plastic though. Long extension cord (8ft), good for extending an outlet and adding 6 more. Has lights for ground and if its protected; the switch is also lit. 4 of the 6 outlets are close together, the other 2 are far apart, makes room for those large boxy AC adapters. Its likely you will have to replace this surge protector after it stops a surge. I recently ran too much current through it and it broke.

I tried this camera during my recent visit to Seattle for Tulip festival. The recording quality is amazing. 5 channel recording is superb. I tried it in 16:9 and 4:3 fine mode with playback on HD Plasma TV. The quality was breathtakingly good. Yet to try photo (claimed to take 4 MP pictures) as photos can only be taken with a memory stick.

Cons:

-Limited Mini DVD space (20 minutes max in fine mode).

-Limited support for combining mini DVDs to a regular sized DVD. Bundled software requires double the size of DVD (9GB) free on the PC to make a movie

-Box contains just the camcorder without any memory stick or DVD. It has to be separately ordered.

This video camera is phenomenal. I bought it for the birth of my son but unfortunately he came early, one day before the camera arrived. I should have bought it sooner. So for the delivery day excitment I used by older Panasonic miniDV tape camera and after that used the Sony 408DVD camera. What a difference. I don't know why people think the miniDVs give a better quality image. In fact I know a profession who uses it and I do believe there is some credibility to that statement, but he also has very expensive professional video equipment. But for the average home user its a hassel dealing with tapes that play only in your camera or you have to capture it via your computer and burn dvds which takes hours to do and tons of hard disk space if you don't want to loose quality. This Sony is one of the higher end DVD cameras from Sony. I believe its exceptional video quality come from the fact that the lens is T-star (sharper) and twice the size of other cameras (1/3in vs 1/6in). I am extrememly happy with it. In addition I don't always have to carry 2 cameras. This camera takes 2MP video (very nice even on HD televisions) and 4MP still images with built in flash in still camera mode. This is enough to print clear 4x6 or even larger. So overall I'm very happy with this camera. You can either use rewritable miniDVDs and then transfer to regular DVDs via computer or do what I do. I buy inexpensive miniDVD -r or +r disc and keep then as "orginals". Later if I want to combine or make a special DVD I can do that. I almost bought a Hard Drive camera but it was this fact that steered me away. For the same price as a low end HD camera I got a high end DVD camera. Also I can finalize and play in anyones DVD player without the need for cables or computers etc. I also feel that every time you trasfer video data (digital or analog) there is a chance that the quality may drop based on the software your using the computer processor and the quality of the dvd writer and media used finally. Thus I decided to record on one time use DVDs as masters and make copies as needed. In point here is that what you do is up to you. Your not forced to to use a computer or forced to copy and free up your DVD-RW if you don't want to. Flexibilty means everything in electronics. I highly recommend this camera and if you can afford it try the 508 but if not the 408 is fantastic. Hope that helps you make you decision.

I had been to Portland & Oregon costal beaches. For the first time I am using a camcorder. My Sony DCR-DVD 408 captured the nature extremely good. Impeccable picture quality, 5.1 dolby stereo effect is cool. I recorded the music played by a person in the Rose test garden and it came out really well. The touch screen is another cool feature. The scene selection(Sunrise/Sunset, beaches, portrait etc) is excellent. Its worth the money.

Only negative thing is the Software is not that versatile to create your own movie.

I loved this camcorder, but I had to return it because unlike the DCR-DVD405 that it replaced, the DCR-DVD408 does not have analog inputs and will not function as a "VCR". This is an important feature if you want to record from another device to this camcorder. I bought one of the last remaining DVD305 instead, which is also an awesome peice of gear. I own five sony cameras and have had mostly good experinces. The one time I had a camera serviced, the repair facility in Laredo, TX performed very well and very quickly. There's really no other choice for me but Sony.

CONS (the "package"):

Alas! The package accompanying the camera is a bit of disappointment:

1. A $7 Memory Stick to capture still pictures is still missing from the SONY packages. Has to be bought separately.

2. The information in the User Manual is awkwardly organised

3. The accompanying software barely covers substantial user needs

Sony has created a very cute and affordable Video-Editing software (Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD) that will actually do the job! It will read the DVD directly from the camera or the PC drive, create the movies and save in a variety of readable formats (mpg, avi, mov, etc). Combined with DVD architect it will create an "ab-fab" final product.

Canon XF100 Professional Camcorder with 10x HD Video lens, Compact Flash (CF) Recording

Having had an XA10 briefly before buying the XF100 I was able to make some direct comparisons.

Bottom line is that the XF100 offers more hard BUTTONS, a huge advantage to any semi-pro user or above, because digging through the menu on site is tedious and time consuming. The codec is also MPEG2 50mbs 4:2:2 color, which means the color accuracy is MUCH better than the XA10 and editing will be much faster and easier to render. It actually meets minimum broadcast specs for the BBC which is pretty amazing for the price range. A more flexible but finicky image. At each shoot, you'll be spending a little more time getting white balance, lighting and picture settings just right vs the XA10's simpler use.

OUT OF THE BOX SHOOTING: No, don't do that. You'll want to do 2 things right away. Google "Custom Picture Profiles" and use the ones called XF1MOJO, HI-GAIN and TRUVID to start. They alter many different aspects of the picture to allow for great looking footage. If you don't do this, you're likely to get grainy footage even in good light and night shots will be unusable. You'll also want to set the LCD screen to BRIGHT if you want to see in in the sunlight while shooting.

LOW LIGHT/NIGHT SHOTS: Use a custom picture profile setup for this and most importantly DO NOT go above 9db GAIN. Auto mode will rocket up to 24db instantly and produce one of the grainiest pictures you can imagine. Keep it below 9 and you'll be pleased. I hooked my camera up to our HDTV and lowered the light while toying with different settings, this was very effective for me to learn what worked and how in that setting.

EDITING: Using both XA10 footage (H264) and XF100 (MPEG2), Adobe CS6, W7x64 still lagged badly and took roughly 2-3x as long for any renders using an 8 core system. The XF100 footage flowed easily and smoothly and rendered faster than realtime in HD on my system while the the H264 not only took longer but caused some odd glitches in Adobe from time to time.

SMALL POINTS: The build quality feels more solid than the XA10, which is also pretty good. The XF100 is very light and while that's nice, it also means you'll be relying on the image stabilization a bit more, which for the most part works well. Full size HDMI out. New firmware (which you probably won't need is out so make sure yours is up to date, do this 1st as it erases all presets). It adds some useful features and is worth doing at canon's website.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE: 60p in 1080 mode, as it is, you can get there but only in 1280x720, which is still a pretty good resolution, no other camera in the class offers it either at the present time. How about a wireless remote that doesn't require pressing TWO buttons to use, I couldn't believe it, absolutely useless in the field, buying a LANC remote for this need is pretty much required due to this. More Custom Picture Profiles would have been nice, they offer three hard presets, which I've yet to find a use for. SDcard options, currently no internal memory and you must buy the pricey Compact Flash Memory. The x400 Transcend works fine BTW, it's the cheapest so far. Adapters for SD cards don't work so don't bother.

WHY STILL GET AN XA10? If you're in need of XLR audio and don't want to step up to the XF100, I guess it makes sense. For my money, I'd just get the Vixia for $700 less and you'll have almost the same thing minus the inputs. If you are an AUTO type of shooter, the XA10 will please you, but if you need to adjust lots of settings, it WILL be a little frustrating. The OUT OF THE BOX experience with the XA10 is pretty good, the presets it offers are very usable and produced excellent quality with little fiddling, while the XF100 will require more setup and fine tuning.

I've spent only a week with each camera at this point so keep that in mind as you consider what I had to say about these cameras. Overall, they're both excellent, but just serve different needs. I make a living with my cameras, so what's important to me might not matter much to others.

UPDATE: Dec 7 2012: After a few months using the camera and shooting a half dozen commercial shoots with it, I can say it's produced very nice footage. Outdoor shoots on sunny days I've been able to go full auto and get outstanding results with absolutely beautiful color reproduction. Low light still requires the settings above but have also been very very good. Auto focus works fine but I've had a few instances where it wanders, can't fault the camera really but manual focus with the MAG button makes this a breeze in the field (thank you Canon).

I've since gotten a x600 card to go with x400s and they work together but you have make sure to set them up properly in the menu and that they have "green" lights on both or it won't automatically start recording on the 2nd card when you need it Pay attention the first time and you'll know what I mean and avoid losing any shots. I've learned the x600 is really only necessary for overcranking as I've had not a single error with any of the x400s @ 1920x1080 30fps, at double the price it's something to consider.

AUDIO: I use a non XLR Rode mic 99% of the time but the onboard audio is usable in a pinch under the right conditions. XLR is the way to go so if you're getting new gear look into it.

Finally, I picked up a 2nd battery, a larger Wasabi and it's been fantastic, I know some people said they didn't get accurate remaining times, but I had no problems at all and at a fraction of the price of Canon batteries, you just can't beat them. No little lights on the back of the battery but other than that you get a lot more juice for your money.

I spent about four months comparing the Canon XF100 to the Canon 7D, and several Sony video cameras. I used mutiple lens on the Canon 7d...testing for depth of field, low light comparisons, etc. For the Indy movie we are shooting now, the Canon XF100 became the perfect choice. Ease of use, 2-3 hours of battery use, double slots for the compact flash cards (one for backup), great low light, the ability to continue a shot for more than 12 minutes (Canon7d), the ability to chose MF or AF, and no need to purchase all the peripherals that you need when you use a DLSR for video. If you can find this camera, its incredible and easy to use. The only drawback is the editing. If you have a 32 bit Windows platform, you will have to upgrade to a new computer for 64 bit if you plan on editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, or the earlier versions of Final Cut Pro. FCPro X at this time is not set up for the Canon XF series.

I was looking for a camcorder to improve upon the image and sound quality that I got from my Canon VIXIA HFS10, and after a lot of research I decided on this one. I haven't been disappointed.

For me the most important feature was the dual XLR inputs, because for documentary shooting, where the voices of my subjects are critical, I can't rely on the onboard microphone. I need at least to add a shotgun on top, or on a boom pole if I have someone else to operate it. Additionally, it helps to have a wireless lavaliere set up and the ability to record both inputs to different channels, and control their levels independently. All that's possible, and quite easy, with this camcorder.

The image quality, also, is a serious step up. I can get good shots indoors as long as it's not dark, and excellent quality during the daytime and at night in a well-lit street. This will record up to 50Mbps, using Canon's XF Codec, which can be edited without difficulty and without the need for conversion using Adobe's Premiere Pro CS6 but should be usable in almost any up-to-date semi-professional editing program.

It records onto compact flash cards, and can hold up to two at once. It can be set to record sequentially, so that as soon as the one card is full it will begin recording to the other without any time lag. You can also remove and replace the card that's not currently recording even with the camera on, so you could keep recording for as long as you like. I use the SanDisk Extreme CompactFlash 32GB Memory Cards, and they work great. It also holds an optional SD card for recording photos and for storing customized camera settings, that can be selected from the menu.

The battery this comes with shoots for about 3 hours, but you can pick up an additional battery that will keep it running for over 8 hours. They've done a good job with providing custom buttons for commonly used functions, and there are ten additional buttons that can be customized to a wide range of additional functions that you'd otherwise have to access through the menu. You can set the focus wheel to manual focus, zoom, or iris and adjust its sensitivity levels to fit your needs. I set one of the custom buttons to the peak function, which shows me where I have sharp edges and helps me when I'm focusing manually.

There's an eyepiece for those who prefer to shoot that way but the LCD screen contains the menu features, and can be rotated in all directions. There's a removable microphone mount on top I found that my shotgun mike didn't fit in there snuggly, so I went to the hardware store and bought three rubber o-rings to place on my mike. Now it fits in there nicely.

I've been shooting with this for a couple of months now, and have gotten great results. There's a lot more that I could say about it, but most of what you need to know is available lots of other places. I wish it had better image quality in very low light situations, but it's better at that than any camera in its price and feature range that I've come across. Like I said I think it's ideal for the low-end and independent documentary filmmaker and other similar uses, such as commercial videos and weddings. Because it is light and has a smaller profile it would also be quite useful on a higher level production when shooting needs to be somewhat discreet and not call attention to itself or scream that a movie's being made. It's worked great for my needs as a low-end independent documentary filmmaker. I've been very happy with it.

Bottom line. Its a three thousand dollar camera with 422 and 1920x1080. Makes a fantastic cheap second camera next to my 5d. XLR imputs. Thinking about purchasing another. Its maybe too light, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. Shoots very well in low light situations. I just shot a video in a one room school house with no electricity at dusk and was able to get the shots without using the infrared. Ya it was a little bit grainy, but I got the shots and I got paid. Ya you can find things to complain about it, but its a three thousand dollar camera. Simple plug in to work with FCP7.

Just a plain DVD player. Playes traditional DVD-R discs. Does not play DVD+Rs and DVD RWs. It played my home made DVD burnt in a DVD-R. It plays my Netflix DVDs well. Picture and sound quality is not more than just okay. It is region free so you can play other region DVDs here. I have a DVD full of MP3s and it does not detect half of them. No support for Divx, Xvid, WMV etc. Supports MPEG-1(VCD DAT files) and MPEG-2(DVD VOB files) only. Takes around a minute to detect a DVD when you insert it.

Bottom line is: spend $10-15 bucks more and get a decent DVD player , specially if you play your home movies. If you are not very serious about quality and if you just play the movies rented from DVD libraries then you may consider buying it.

I don't know what is wrong with the other reviewers units, but MINE works perfectly. (some people MIGHT just need to clean their DVD's once in a while, ya know!?!) I've given it a workout with every DVD and CD I can find....Mainstream manufacturers, home-recorded cd's, and even "dollar" type cheapo DVD movies. ALL WORKED PERFECTLY. Easy to setup, easy to operate, and the remote is great. Larger buttons than many DVD players I've seen and had. Cheapest electronic purchase I've ever had (...) and works BETTER than many expensive ones I've dealt with. A+ all around.

This DVD player will play some DVD's but not others. It is very frustraiting to bring home a new dvd and it blinks blue the whole time you use it. I would not recommend anyone buy this.

I should've known better. This player didn't even last 6 weeks. Kept on getting a "bad disk" error. Luckily, WalMart allows returns for up to 90 days. Don't waste your money.

It's compact, but works as good as many other brands, plus it's compatible with HDTV. Great buy!

Cons

The ir LEDs are not very powerful at all compared to some of my other cams with less LEDs.

The ir coverage are is very narrow like a tight cone.

The adjustment screw covers are cheap rubber and if in a completly exposed are (direct sun and weather) they will fail in a year or two which will let water into the camera body.

Image was a bit disapointing considering it is supposed to be 600 lines but I need to check the focus again as it tends to change over time (adjustsment creeps?)

I have it on a dvr card with only cf resolution and via 175 foot cat5 run on a telephone pole so it might be that combination that's giving me less than spectacular images but the 420 line qsee all weather cam that this one replaced had a sharper image and much better ir illumination.

Been up and running for six months now directly in the direct wind, rain, snow, and minus 27C weather with no problems so far

The camera was purchased because of the high resolution, zoom lens and night vision features and it was a good decision. I needed a camera to cover my driveway and steps leading to my home. The zoom feature allowed me to tailor the coverage area to exactly what was required. There are two adjustments a zoom and a focus that you have to work together to get a perfect image. This camera allows you to put a text ID in the image and select its location on the image. You can also set the shutter speed, brightness, back light compensation, AGC, white balance, mirror image, day or night mode, motion area, privacy areas of the screen can be blacked out, contrast, sharpness and color gain. The controls are on the back of the camera to set it up so depending where you install the camera you may have to set it up before it is in its final location. I use the default settings and they work just fine. It comes with a 2 amp power supply and the specs do not state how much current it draws in the night mode with the IR on. I feed the power to the camera with 18 gauge solid copper wire to limit the voltage drop which would dim the IR lights if a smaller power cable were used. Color images are good and what I expected. The IR images are good but not as good as the color. I do not use the motion detection feature of the camera but use the one in the Mini DVR VideoSecu Mini Security CCTV DVR Recorder Motion Detection Overwrite Schedule Videos with Audio Recording 3UAwhich it works great with.

Issues: The only issue I had was very minor. The template provided to drill the mounting holes for the camera mount was wrong. Two of the holes were out of location. So check it before you use it. It is a pain if you are drilling in thick steel and they don't line up, ask me how I know.

I love this Spy Camera Pen. Product arrived really fast in only 3 days. The packaging was good and the directions were clear enough to understand all the functions. I even got a follow up email on using the pen.

It's very light to write with and carry around. Takes good video and photo when the pen camera is not moving really fast or standing still. Takes a bit of time to get used to it but its worth the price.

Very convenient when I don't have my phone around to take pictures and does a decent job of taking videos of documents and tests.

This product is really awesome to say the least. I am not too good at anything and therefore would shun from making a purchase for something like this spy pen camera.

That was until last week my cousin got one of these and was posting his own videos online. I was amazed, I could not believe how easy and handy this spy pen camera actually is; lightweight, fits in your pocket and is lighter than a real pen.

The price is very affordable too. All the other products I've seen here are not as cool and promising as this one and cost a lot more. The fact that this spy pen camera is so comfortable to hold and ergonomically designed is a plus.

I'm really digging this little recorder. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and once I got past its limitations I'm really starting to use it a lot. I've tried a few portable multitracks over the past year (Micro BR 4, Boss BR800, & Zoom R8 to name a few) and they just didn't click with me. The R8 came awfully close to winning the battle I still have it and may hold onto it, but so far the more time I spend learning to use the BR-80 the more it seems to be the right tool for me.

Long story short: If you're looking for an awesome practice tool and something to quickly jot your ideas down with or simply just create a rough outline of a riff or song before it disappears from your brain completely, definitely check the BR-80 out. If you're looking for professional sounding recordings to share with the world or hoping this will replace your current DAW and plugins, go get your head checked! A $299 device that's slightly larger than an iPod isn't going to make that happen. At least not in 2011.

Pros:

The size. It's a no brainer when comparing to other units. I can keep this in my backpack at all times and have it out and on at a moment's notice.

I'm a long time Boss GT floor board user and have grown to despise the higher gain COSM models, but the amps on the BR80 aren't all that bad. Still very mid-rangey but if you lay off the gain, play with the eq, and dial back your guitar's volume knob about 15-20% the higher gain models can sound really good. Cleans are great.

Battery life seems great. 6 hours with regular batteries, about 3-4 on my rechargables so far.

Less is more. Having used Sonar and ProTools for years now it's nice to just plug into something, hit record, and go to town. Aside from the learning curve nothing really gets in the way of getting drafts of your ideas onto this thing. If you don't like it (I didn't at first) keep at it and READ THE MANUAL. Give it a fighting chance. Burn some calories. You might be pleasantly surprised. I sure am.

For what they are (remember this is a small little $299 rectangle running on 2 AA batteries), the drum sounds aren't all that bad. You have 8 kits to choose from and there should be something that is at least close enough for what most users will have in mind.

The onboard mics are great. I live in NYC and it's fun sometimes to switch them on when I'm walking around and capture random audio in the city. They're very sensitive to wind as well as anything that might be in their way at all (such as fingers near them if you're holding it while recording).

Eband is really cool. I'm not too crazy about the backup band stuff but there's a drum folder full of drum-only loops that are much more realistic sounding and fun to jam to.

Cons:

Scroll scroll scroll... we live in a world of menus and this device is no exception. You can pretty much get all of the essential operations done without too much scrolling, but when it comes to editing tracks or punching in be prepared to get your button pressing and thumb dialing on.

If you like odd meters (which I do) and want to use something other than metronome patterns for rhythms be prepared to invest some time importing your own midi loops to this thing. Also on the odd meter note, you can change up time signatures and tempos in the rhythm track in each song.. this is something I wasn't able to do on other units, at least not with a lot of extra effort bouncing tracks and whatnot.

You need to download software from BOSS (it also comes on the included memory card) to convert tracks to .wav if you plan on importing them to your PC (and vice versa). You can't just plug in via USB and drag-n-drop. Totally lame. Just like the total wankers they use on their painful demo videos, Boss is really behind the times with this aspect. Come on, it's 2011... go with the standard, man! I'm learning to deal with it but overall it's just another pain in the arse step getting in the way of creativity.

The reverbs are horrible. If you use it for anything more than a very subtle enhancement it's very sterile and sounds incredibly "pixilated" (that's the best word I can think of to describe it). This is disappointing but not a complete deal breaker if you're just using this as a sketchpad. If you're looking for lush verbs on your solo acoustic guitar tracks, fugeddabaddit. I wish I could take my Zoom R8 reverb and drop it into the BR80.

No power supply. Not a big deal if you have a lot of rechargeable batteries but be prepared to shell out more cash for that as well as a carrying case of some sort.

The little nubs on the navigation dial aren't the most comfortable on thumbs when you have to scroll through a large amount of data.

The only real issue I've had so far is dropouts while recording and getting a DRIVE BUSY! error message. I'm positive this was due to the crappy memory card I inserted (it comes with a 2G but I wanted more space). I bought a new higher speed card and have had zero problems since.

If you're going to be lugging this around a lot I'd seriously consider buying a case of some sort for it. I bought the BOSS sleeve/pouch kit and although it's a bit spendy it gives a really nice solid feel to the recorder and buttons (and protects the thing, of course). I've been using BOSS products for over 20 years and never had a problem due to their "built like a tank" approach. I'd like to think the BR-80 will live up to that but it's too early to make a fair assessment. Unlike any of my BOSS stompboxes I would be weary of knocking this thing around too much. Protect your investment and BUY A CASE. $40 seems like a rip off and it kind of is, but it's much better than potentially paying $299 for a replacement unit.

This BR80 is definitely a keeper in my opinion. If you're looking for a quick, portable, decent sounding solution to document the music ideas in your head you should definitely consider trying this out. If you're looking to cut professional sounding recordings, be realistic and save up more money for something else.

So I never get around to writing reviews about anything I buy but I'm so impressed with this little machine that I felt I had to get my 2 cents in. I was trying to find something that would meet 2 needs; a) to create live stereo recordings of live band shows etc., and more importantly, b) to allow me to quickly and easily get down ideas for songs, and then work on them adding more tracks, editing, and so on. The BR-80 has three modes, one of which (e-Band mode) is close to useless for me it's kind of a play along mode for practicing, and playing backup tracks for live shows or whatever. But the other 2 modes are EXACTLY what I was looking for. The "live rec" mode is just that, using the built-in stereo condenser mics to make pretty decent stereo recordings. The MTR (multi-track mode) is great for my #2 need, and I'm blown away by how good a job this things does as an idea sketchpad. Once you have the hang of it it's really pretty simple to use, and it gives you plenty of options to mix your tracks after you get them down. If you've ever used a DAW, this device will be completely intuitive and for me at least, I just kept finding more bells and whistles that I could use if I needed.

Here are some highlights of the MTR mode:

-8 simultaneous playback tracks

-64 v-tracks, so you can store multiple alternate takes etc.

-built-in drum machine with selectable drumkits

-COSM modeling for input effects (guitar amp modeling etc.)

-a remarkably useable 'bass emulator' mode for electric guitar (so you only have to carry one guitar around)

-editable parameters for all channels (level, eq (3-band, sweepable mid), pan, reverb, solo/mute)

-editable of input effects (e.g. control of compression, distortion, modulation, delay etc. for all modeled effects, and the ability to save revised effects as user patches)

-much more I'm still finding out all it can do.

Is it perfect? Of course not. There are missing features that would be great to have editable drum patterns (if you want to use other than the built-in patterns, you need to create them on a PC and import them as SMF files), send effects other than just reverb, and so on. And as other users have noted, it's in no way a replacement for a real DAW setup. But it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to meet 2 (or 3) very specific needs, and it does that extremely well.

It's amazing what this can do especially in such a small package. It's like having a recording studio in your back pocket. I'd get the AC adapter along with this. The batteries will last a few hours but may fail at the most inopportune time.

The dial stopped working after very little use. This is a major design flaw of this unit since the dial is used to control all functions.

This is an excellent product. Not only is it packed with features drums, effects, stereo high-fidelity condenser mics but the amazing thing is that for a really tiny (it fits in your pocket, for crying out loud!) menu-driven device, it is remarkably simple and straightforward to operate. All the features are easily accessed. What I'm saying is the user-interface for once, in these kinds of products is intelligent and intuitive and accessible. That means that the tons of features are truly usable. What's the point of having a packed unit if it's hard to use? Kind of a suggestive statement, now that I think about it, but I leave it as is to show I don't work for the company. I'm just really pleased with the product, the price, and I want to applaud whomever was the lead designer on it.

And to that person, my only peeve the rotating knob is hard to use, takes two fingers to operate effectively, but it can be done without any problem if you are just a bit more deliberate than you ought to be.

I was attracted by the low pricetag, and ended up with a product that doesn't work well enough to use.

What I needed was a simple voice recorder, for taking notes while on the road. But getting to the recording screen took several steps each time, and required that I focus on the unit to navigate to the right screen.

And the screen is very small… too small to see your options at a glance.

Then I found that you can't simply stop recording and resume when ready… you have to leave "record" mode to save the recording, and then re-navigate to the start point to begin again.

Playing back was just as awkward.

As a music player (or voice note player), managing the file system was just as difficult. If you want the device to simply play everything that's on it, no problem. But if want to select something specific, you'll have a hard time.

Unfortunately, the user's manual that ships with this player is for another product by the same manufacturer… a similar product, but with different menus and controls. I finally found out who the manufacturer was (the unit has no name), but their website has the same incorrect user's manual.

For playing back voice notes, you can use a computer and your computer's media player. But that defeats this unit's purpose as a media player.

To be honest, the unit performs as I should have expected for $8.99. Now, I'm using it as an awkward-sized flash drive.

I was hesitant to buy this record player because of the lack of reviews. But I wanted a 3-speed player and didn't want to pay over $100. And I'm happy to report it's a solid machine. I've had it for about 3 months now and have played hundreds of records and it works great so far. Has a nice, elegant look to it and is super easy to use. Being able to record to an SD card is a cool feature, so you don't have to bring over your laptop to hook it up.

The only negatives I have are I wish it had a tone control. The sound is a little flat. If you hook it to an amp you can adjust this, but there are no sound adjustments built into the unit. It also doesn't come with software for editing your mp3's. Again, if you have Garage Band or whatever, not a big deal, but if you don't have sound editing software, you'll need to get it if you want to edit the recordings. But those are tiny complaints, especially for the price.

Definitely a good all-around record player. Would recommend.

I got the Mutant MIG-MT210 to transcribe to digital 78 and 33-1/3 RPM records left by my father when he recently passed away. Some time before he died, his record player broke (he was always tinkering with it unnecessarily). I have a Realistic (yep, Radio Shack) LAB-310, not a great turntable, but adequate. But it doesn't play 78's, which is why I ordered the Mutant.

My copy of the Mutant has a very, very noisy motor. Even after I made adjustments, according to the manual, the noise was not only directly audible, but showed up on the MP3's produced. Filtering with Audacity, which should have been an unnecessary step, was not sufficient. I can't stand the noise.

The Mutant operated as described in the manual, no problems there. However, the noise is unacceptable.

Canon VIXIA HF M52 10x HD Flash Memory Camcorder

I was after a well priced HD camera for recording family events etc and came across this one. Did HD, good reviews and plenty of internal memory with space to add more with an SD Card. The camera has plenty of options but is missing some that other, cheaper, cameras have such as night vision recording.

Recording quality is as good as you could expect from a HD camera and the output is high quality easily sent to a computer through Wifi or the cable in the box where you can edit it with whatever editing software you might have including Windows Live Movie Maker.

Only real downside is its size which could be a benefit to some. However, for me it is a bit too small for my hands. Men might have trouble really holding this comfortably for any length of time.

Although this camcorder has a lot of functionality, I was still able

to start using it right away in auto mode. I am impressed by the

quality of the photos and videos.

After four outings with this camcorder, I can't wait to begin using

it in manual mode, and learning how, and when to use the

cinema filters.

Don't waste your time with the Pixela VideoBrowser editing software which is included in the package. It's the pits, and

there's no real support for it. Otherwise, I would have given

this review five stars.

I'm very happy with my purchase. The quality is fantastic. I've been filming indoors without any extra lighting and it comes out great. In fact the video looks brighter than the original space.

I bought an external mike which I need an adapter because it has a mini adapter on top of the camera. $20 for the adapter.

It is smaller than it looks online. I don't have a problem with that though. My hand fits fine and I have an average man's hand. Fit's in a small camera bag and easy to transport.

Love the built in memory. I may never need a card.

The next level up is probably the g10 and that is about $1,400. Not worth the extra money to me, even though I use this professional to video tape my magic shows.

It has a nice feature where the focus locks on your face. You walk around and it follows you. (not the camera, just the focus "box."

I haven't even got into the wi-fi yet.

I could rate this 5 star, but I'm thinking the g10 would be 5 star.

I would highly recommend this camera for the family and professionally.

For a very lightweight and simple camera, this guy gets the job done. We use this camera for interviews and needed something small, inexpensive and easy to use. We love the fact that it can record directly to MP4 in various resolutions to make editing that much easier. In conjunction with 128GB SanDisk SD card(s), we were able to record well over 40 hours of video without any issues. After 30mins of consistent recording, it will stop, but I am sure there is a setting for that. We've always been big fans of Canon and this sub $800 camera does a fantastic job. Well worth it.

I have ordered and used every brand of blank DVDs for making duplicates that are sold by Amazon.com, and these are the only DVDs that I have had absolutely no fails with. I have gone though 500 DVDs and so far no duds. Each of the other brands will give me at least five or more fails per 100. I have not used Verbatim for duplicating as I use them only for my Masters.

I use the best 11 tray DVD/CD Duplicator sold by Kingdom Tapes.

These are the best DVD's so far I have purchased. I make a lot of DVD's of sermons for a local church and weddings. The worry with putting a lable on them is some have logos that bleed through. Not these!! Now I can make white lables and not worry about some goofy logo. Burned about 50 so far and not one failed. I might add another shelf in the studio just to stock up on these.

First off, ordering and service from Amazon was impeccable. What I've come to expect.

On to the machine. I bought the machine based on price and brand name. I thought Toshiba would provide a quality product. I was wrong.

I have cable straight into the TV no box very primitive.

I hooked up the VCR no problem. The auto timer function never synced with the cable input. I go to manual set up.

When you go to manual to set up the time and other functions turn the volume down, or else you'll get very loud static.

I set the switch on the back of the VCR to channel 3. When going to play a tape you have to have the TV set on channel 3 AND that still won't work. Once the tape starts playing you get static you have to dial the TV up or down one channel, then go to channel 3 the tape then plays fine.

When stopping the tape, the VCR makes a lot of "gear" noise. Extremely noisy when rewinding, and ejecting.

No remote eject only manual. The remote seems extremely cheap.

All in all a very poor piece of equipment.

I would recommend that you look around at other reviews and find a better machine, consider paying a little more.

This VCR is pretty much a steal for only one hundred dollars. It has features that are absent from other VCRs in this price range.

This Hi-Fi stereo VCR, at only 99 dollars, incorporates features useful for home theater. It has the standard width of 17 inches, so you can easily stack it with home theater components. It has front styling that doesn't attract attention. It blends in very well.

The picture and sound quality are very good for the price. However, the pause picture was worse than I had expected. It has front inputs, a feature that is absent from most VCRs in this price range. Furthermore, a faceplate covers the inputs so they remain hidden when you are not using them.

One bad thing about this VCR is the playback noise. It generates a lot of noise at normal playback that can easily be heard when there is only dialogue during a movie, and you are sitting about 10 feet away.

The biggest fault, however, was the remote. It is absolutely ridiculous. First of all, it is very small. Second, the buttons are all indentical in size and shape. Third, the buttons are not placed very logically. You cannot operate the remote without having to look at it. I would reccomend just buying a generic remote for this VCR and throwing the old one away.

Overall, however, I find the pros, esepecially the price, to outweigh the cons. I would recommend buying this if you do not want to sped a lot of money on a good VCR. But if you are willing to pay at 150 dollars or more, then you can get a much better VCR.

The product does everything I could ask for a mid price machine. The product has little or no noise in operation, extreamly fast rewind and fast forward. The still frame mode is clear, and steps one frame at a time for those hard to catch moments. The auto tracking works well and the picture is clear. I am very happy with this product.

This Toshiba VCR lived up to my expectations, but just barely. It is reliable, relatively sturdy, and I havent had any problems in playback or record, but there are several small changes that would make it a better product.

First: the remote. The buttons are all small (and the same size) so you basically have to turn on the lights if you want to control the machine. Unless, of course, you memorize the configuration, but you would have to use it a lot, and it's not really a universal remote.

Second: setting it to record. The steps to record are easy to follow, but instead of being able to use the numeric keypad, you must use arrows to change the time, which can be a real pain. Believe me, you get sick of scrolling (slowly) from 6:30 to 11:00 when you have to do it several times. Also, it doesnt automatically turn on the timer to record when you turn the power off; you have to do that manually.

Third: automatic clock. It worked, but in the time it took me to get it to do so, I could have set the clock myself.

So, I guess I am satisfied, but if I bought a new VCR, it would probably be a different one.

Yes,Im an audiophile with over 15,000 dollars invested in audio-video components...No,this is not a component that screams top of the line features.....However,what you do get is a great second hifi deck for dubbing vhs movies or dual recording of different cable programs..The fact is folks,VHS recording technology is about as good as its going to get,unless you go superVHS..This Toshiba,though only four heads still gives you great resolution,about the max capable(240 lines),of this format..I have it mated with a top-tier Toshiba vcr that cost 349.99...And dub-edit, shows,sporting events,and home movies..The reason decks like this can be so cheap is not "poor quality",but rather,market saturation...So,even if your just starting a home theater system,this is a great simple machine that should meet most of your needs...Also,it looks pretty darn good for its price!!..Check out some of those "ICKY" looking machines from Panasonic,sharp and a few others and you"ll see what I mean....In closing,a great value and solid performer for its price...

I actually ordered the DVP 3560, an older and slightly more expensive machine. It was sold by a third party seller and Fulfilled by Amazon. Well, the seller had it listed wrong and I received the 3680. At first I was upset as it was not region free as advertised and PAL disks showed "Error" on the display (and no error message on the TV). However, after a brief internet search, I found a very simple workaround that can be done with the 3680's remote. The player now does a beautiful job with my European DVDs and, thus far, I'm very happy with its performance and features.

For those who are interested, here's an easy way to make the 3680 region free:

1. Power ON the DVD player with no disc inside

2. Go to the SETUP icon and press OK; next, scroll down to Preferences.

3. With preferences highlighted,

3a. Press NEXT CHAPTER (button above AUDIO, it looks like this: >|),

Not a bad "orphan annie" product at all and can't beat the price (under $50)solid DVD player, okay on screen menu. Limited output options for techies (really, for S-video, HDMI, and component output all in one, lay out over $100). The big issue is the USB playback option. Serious digging on the internet (not Amazon by the way) was required to find out that this unit will ONLY play very select kinds of video file formats avi yes, Xvid, some of them, MPG-3, maybe, and MPG-4, no way. Software updates, on the Phillips web site, stop in 2011 for this unit, so...set the wayback machine, or get a more expensive blue-ray player if USB is your input choice..

It is possible to find more than a few web sites that will down convert modern file formats to the older sorts, assuming you enjoy that sort of techno-torture and guaranteed dubious results.

I bought this for my teenager and was excited that he can play video files off a flash drive. He likes to download videos and instead of having to convert them he can just watch them from the flash drive.

What I Like:

The High Speed USB: Reads wma files and burn CD's to mp3's, I can use my IOGEAR 12-In-One Pocket Flash Memory Card Reader/Writer, GFR209A (White). I put a memory card in the IOGEAR and plug the IOGEAR into the USB on the DVD player.

Can fast forward or rewind 2x to 32x fast, also has slow motion (don't remember how slow)

What I Don't Like:

When I put the HDMI setup to upscale to 1080p it messes up and my TV (Samsung UN22D5003 22-Inch 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV (Black) [2011 MODEL]) said the mode was not supported. Then I had to unplug the HDMI cable, plug in the RCA cables to view the menu, and it only upscales to 1080i not 1080p.

The manual said it reads avi video files but it doesn't play my videos. I hear the sound with no picture only the message "Video codec not supported".

Also you can't select songs to make a playlist. It just plays all the song in that folder.

When I first got it the disc tray wouldn't come out and when it did open it wouldn't go back in. It finally did and it working without any problems now

Overall: Does just about everything it said it would and I want it to do. I bought this from Amazon during the Black Friday deals for 39.99. I am very happy with it.

Premium HDMI v1.3 Cable (2M/6ft.)

Cables are a topic that really gets me steamed. Just doing a quick scan of the 6-foot HDMI cables available here on Amazon, I found more than 50 offerings ranging in price from just over $1 ($.01 for used) up to $100. Why so many to choose from and why such an outrageous variation in prices? Well, if you've ever shopped for cables, then you can guess which brand costs the most. If you read that manufacturer's description, there's a dizzying mountain of mumbo jumbo that amounts to "you'll be sorry if you don't buy this cable." But look closely at what they DON'T say. They don't say, "Our cables work better." There's a good reason for that: HDMI is a digital standard. The cable carries a digital signal. Either it works or it doesn't. Period. You will never get a blurry, grainy, fuzzy, off-color picture with *any* HDMI cable. Either you get a perfect picture or you don't get any picture at all. If the cable is poorly constructed, you might get an intermittent connection, but don't buy into the idea that one HDMI cable will give you a richer or sharper picture. It's just not true.

Here we're looking at a $10 cable that, as of this writing, has many of the features of the $100 cables. It has 24 karat gold connectors, solid copper conductors, and is HDMI 1.3a compliant. It supports the highest audio and video formats. The build quality is high but the cable itself is on the thin side at AWG 30. Many other HDMI cables are AWG 28 or thicker. But for the length of this cable, 2 meters, that really isn't an issue.

Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so I spent an evening switching this cable out with a couple of others I have. No difference. I then used this cable to watch TV for a couple of days. Beautiful. The source I used was a DirecTV HR21. The TV was a new Panasonic 42" plasma with a top resolution of 1080p. I had no issues with this cable at all. The connectors remained firmly in place and the picture quality was what I expected from an HDTV. What more could you ask for?

Bottom line: Don't worry. Be happy. This $10 cable does the job.

First of all I'm an electrical and a software engineer so I'm generally not fooled by marketing information when it comes to electronics. In case you didn't know HDMI stands for High Def Multimedia Interface, and it is standardized. That is it's agreed upon by producers of the electronics they use this format to output uncompressed digital audio, as well as compressed formats, and HD video. If you use component video, a near equal standard in quality, you need 5 cables, three for video, and two for sound, and the sound is analog based. There are additional inputs that can be used for digital sound to go with component video, but they are not in the same cable like the all-in-one HDMI cables.

What's so good about this cable, and why the high rating? Well that rating would dive quickly if I thought the price were too high, I'm reviewing this Vine product without knowing the price. What I can say is the cable is very well made, reinforced on the plug ends so as not to become damaged, and has gold contacts that do not degrade. The standard is 1.3a, and essentially that is the latest, it supports newer sound formats, and something called deep color.

Why should you buy it? Well if you have the latest audio and video equipment, you may want something that supports the highest standards. You'll still want to gauge the price. I bought some HDMI cables on Amazon that were very cheap, only a few dollars each. They performed just fine for my HDTV connected to an up converting DVD player. I swapped the cable with this one, and put on an anime episode that I knew to be a bit grainy when blown up to 1080i. I changed the sound formats to the specialty ones the TV supported as well. I detected no differences at all, my previous cable was a 1.2 standard but it worked just fine. I really don't have any current components that can test the new uncompressed audio, and maybe in the future these will become popular. Then again, maybe they are only for audiophiles.

The danger is buying cables that process digital information is to overpay. Companies out there will immediately adopt the latest standards, so the price will get competitive soon. Remember this is the digital world of signals. You don't need an auto jumper cable-sized copper to transmit digital data. That's why these HDMI's can be made so small. Here is a quick tutorial on the differences between digital and analog. I have lamp cord sized copper going from my stereo to my speaker. The reason is the full amplified power up to 100 watts or more must be output to move the magnet coils in a speaker system. If the transmission were digital what would be done is the data bits would be transmitted on thin digital rated cables, just like from your USB drive to your MP3 players or computer system. Then there would be a decoder in the speaker which would decode the data, convert to an analog signal, amplify it in the speaker and drive the speaker coils to hear it. Unamplified signals do not need as much copper to transmit along wires. That means you don't need very big wires, or special quality to handle the digital signals, just enough to handle the rated volume of digital data.

Unless the cables are carelessly made they work, even the cheap ones do this if they are compliant to the latest standards. If your equipment is older you don't even need full 1.3 compliance. Electronics stores sometimes make a living selling expensive cables to make up for low margins on their component sales. This is a perfectly fine cable if the price is reasonable, if it ventures towards the half century price mark in dollars however, shop around!

This lower-cost HDMI cable works fine and is manufactured to last. The gold-covered connectors are encased by larger-than-normal oval rubber grips, which makes handling these plugs easier than the conventional square-edged HDMI grips. They are more comfortable to hold and to slide into, and out of, video components.

I tested this HDMI cable against the three existing HDMI cables that I have, and I found no difference in picture or audio quality between them. These tests were done between a Sony 1080p 46-inch LCD television and three components: a Motorola DVR, a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player, and an older Sony DVD player that is being unconverted into the Sony LCD TV. I also tested this cable from a Toshiba laptop that has an HDMI output jack, and again I found no difference in picture and audio quality between this cable and the existing, and more expensive, HDMI cables that I had previously purchased.

These lower-cost HDMI cables work fine, and they are manufactured to last, and they are made to move easier between video components.

When I saw this HDMI cable offered on Amazon Vine, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to ditch my component cable and upgrade to glorious 1080p resolution. After hooking up this cable to my Samsung 40A850 flat screen from my digital cable box I lost the sound. I tried this cable on the upstairs HD TV and had the same problem. Not to be deterred, I went out to a chain department store and brought an overpriced cable which worked perfectly. Judging from other reviews it could be possible that the factory in China that produces this item might have quality control issues. On a positive note: Amazon offers a 30 day full refund policy.

After reading some of the reviews I wasn't sure how this cable would function. Compared to some 1.3 certified cables I've used this cable is somewhat thinner. I found it had a good connection with my tv and receiver. Since the cable is lighter the weight of the cable itself does not pull so the connection remains intact. So far I haven't had any problems with it passing audio or video. If you have tight space in a component stand it will be easier to pass than a thicker cable. As long as the signals continue to pass without a problem then this cable is a good value.
