Memorex MB0035 Digital Voice Recorder

Memorex MB0035 Digital Voice RecorderI occasionally do some freelance writing, and I wanted a relatively cheap voice recorder for the rare occasions when I interview people.

The memorex is fairly slim and light, which is a good thing, so it can easily fit into pockets. The controls are a little unwieldy, as changing features and modes involve frantic pressing of a couple of rather unyielding buttons. As has been mentioned, the display is rather hard to see as well.

The recording quality is good if you hold it right in front of the person speaking, but if you are going to put it on the desk while you sit there and chat with someone, you'd have to strain to hear the words upon playback. The inbuilt speakers are pretty crap, and I have to plug in a pair of headphones in order to hear the playback properly.

However, by far my biggest gripe is this: there is no way to fast-forward or rewind througth a message. Imagine having recorded 20 minutes of a conversation, and then wanting to listen to something that was said near the end of the conversation: you'd have to sit through the whole playback! This drawback is the reason I'm giving such a low rating.

Of course, this recorder is way cheaper than most other digital recorder, but there are a lot of tape recorders that are in its price range. I suppose if you're getting this to take short messages, its size and weight makes it a good choice, but if you're planning on recording long conversations or messages, then you might want to look at something else.

the price is great. it's fine for my purposes. i use it instead of a notebook to remind me of things i have to do.

My main issue is that when I purchase something NEW it comes in a box or package. Not shrink wrapped with the instructions. Makes for an embarrassing gift.

This is a very basic unit and has good features for the price. I'll mention some useability items that aren't covered in the product description, maybe help someone decide if it's what they need.

Pros

--------

"One-touch record" feature: This is an important plus for me, since I use the unit for making quick voice notes when I'm driving or otherwise occupied; so it needs to be simple to use without taking my eyes off the road. The unit is in an "Idle" state, displaying the time, whenever it's not in use. From this state, you can press the Record button and hold it in for two or three seconds, and it will turn fully ON and start recording (with a little beep to let you know recording has started). You can then release the Record button and it continues recording until you press the Record button again. At that point, it goes into a Standby state (ready to record another note, play back, etc.) and, if you don't press any other buttons, will go back to the Idle state after about a minute. This is an alternate method from what's mentioned in the manual, i.e., press a button to turn it on, wait until it initializes (two or three seconds), then press the Record button to start recording. Very handy for quick, simple voice memos without a lot of button fiddling. This is the main reason I gave it 4 stars, in spite of the Cons.

Cons

--------

The clock is WILDLY inaccurate! It loses about 5 or 10 minutes a day!

If left in Pause mode when playing back, it does not fall back to the Idle state, so eats batteries very quickly; so be sure it's Stopped, not just Paused, before putting it away.

After deleting a memo, it automatically jumps to the last memo in the list. So, if you want to delete the first few memos in a long list, you have to scroll back through the list to the one you want to delete, delete it, then scroll back through the list again for the next one you're deleting, starting from the end of the list every time.

Sound quality isn't great (some background noise), but still very understandable.

The following items could be viewed as Pros or Cons, depending on what you're looking for, so will just list them separately:

When playing back the memos, it doesn't stop after playing each one, but plays them all in sequence, stopping only after the last one.

It does not connect to a computer, allowing you to transfer files. (I wouldn't expect it to, for the price.) This has the advantage that it initializes more quickly when starting up from the Idle state, but the obvious disadavantage that you can't use a computer to manage the files. For my use, this is a Pro -for voice memos (shopping items, ToDo items) I'd rather have it quick and simple.
