I don't know why they didn't design it in a way to connect it to PC or something! You cannot copy and move your recording files! WOW!

I ordered this recorder so I could record a class in which the professor talks extremely fast. I try to sit near the front, and this recorder picks up her voice impressively well. I was worried about background noise, but this recorder does better than expected.

The only thing I would do to improve this recorder is to have a way to put the class on to a computer so I could then put it on my mp3 player. But, maybe there is a way to do this, and I just haven't figured it out yet...

Overall, I have been impressed and would recommend this recorder.

I bought it for my wife and son, So I do not use it myself, but I expected that it had an USB port for transferring files to a PC. They told me that it doesn't have.

I bought the Olympus VN-7000 on eBay to record NPR directly, bypassing the computer and iPod. I recorded directly from the Mic. jack, using a variable volume control to prevent overload. I recorded 15 hours in HQ mode and listened to 10 hours. Suddenly the device locked up and I was unable to manipulate the controls. I reset the batteries and the machine to no avail. The instruction manual does not offer a remedy. I had the same problem with an unused VN-6000 on initiating it. UPDATE: After 15 attempts, I revived both locked units. It is not possible to hear audio from the speaker or headphone. I plan to stay away from Olympus VN digital recorders. I'll research later models carefully and buy new from Olympus to obtain a warranty.

I guess in today's day of ultra-interconnection, it's quite a throwback, and entirely unexpected to find a digital voice recorder that does not play well with other devices. I'm having trouble finding a reason anyone would want a recorder with so much memory that cannot be backed up to computer. I bought a cable to run the audio to the mic on another Olympus recorder that does have a USB drive, but the sound distorts so much it's unlistenable. Let's say you do want to keep hours upon hours of recordings, you then have to search forever through menus to get to the one you want. If you use such things for lists, why would you want hours of memory?

As a professional journalist, I can think of few other products that make as little sense as this one. Pet rocks are more useful. Important interviews are now locked forever on the device with no hope of creating good stories.

Part of this is my fault for not reading the specs carefully enough when buying, but it defies logic for any recording device in existance to not include pc compatability.
