SWANN SW361-THC ThumbCam Mini Digital Video Camera

I am not a techie by any stretch of the imagination. I bought this product for my job and personal use.

FIRST IMPRESSIONSI was surprised as soon as I opened the package. It came with an assortment of accessories that made the camera a "flexible" device for various uses. I picked up the camera and was glad it was heavy for its size. That in itself doesn't mean anything but lets face it...cheaply made, poor quality items tend to be light weight and shabbily assembled. This wasn't. It has a metal casing as far as I can tell. The controls arent flimsy but solidly in place and the machining seems quite good.

THE INSTRUCTIONSNot bad but..but not great either. It eludes to images and video being stored on a micro SD card but neither the instructions or box actually said "Card not Included". I know some boxed models include a mico SD card by mine didn't. It is also a bit confusing on what the indicator lights should be doing when powered up, recording, and standby modes. I figured it out mainly by just playing with it.

OPERATIONOnce I figured out the lights and the modes it is pretty straigforward to use. My first video recording was at night around midnight driving home from work. I was pointing it out the windshield on the freeway at the lights and businesses I was driving by. Since it has no viewfinder I had to wait to download it on the computer when I got home. I must say I was very pleased with the quality of the recording and video. I tried it a few more times that night in barely lit rooms and was still pleased with what the results were. I saw the other review saying it stayed on for thirty seconds and shut off and it is not the case with mine. I put a 8gb card in mine and it seems to hold plenty of video and the battery lasts as long as I need it too so far. Downloading video files and photos from it is a real no-brainer. I didn't need to install the included software and my laptop recognized it as an external drive. I would recommend this camera to someone who might be looking for a mini-cam for security/liability reasons.

basically, this claims to be 720p, which it is, but what it does is force a 480p picture into widescreen.

the lens is pure garbage, very very narrow field of view. I set it up in a room indoors, and at 12 feet away , it will only record a 4 foot squared section.....not true widescreen, save $, buy another product

The instructions are poorly translated and inaccurate, and the confusing meanings of the buttons and lights are somewhat irritating to figure out. Aside from that, it shot decent video two or three times, now all it does is shut itself off after about 5 minutes. Worthless, do NOT waste your money on crap from Swann. Their troubleshooting website wants big $$$ to answer your questions. What a ripoff !

The ThumbCam has good video, if you can get it to work. It records for five minutes or so, and then just turns itself off. Not reliable.

Battery sucks, wont hold a charge.. records for 30 seconds shuts off. Time will not post current even as set up as manual says. Splurge for something better if you life depends on it. I bought this for personal liability protection when out and CCW,it is useless. Should have went with my instincts and bought a more expensive one.
