I've tried out several different 1080p upconverting dvd/divx players and this one is my favorite. I've returned: Philips 5982, LG DivX player, and a Toshiba player (the Toshiba was the cheapest feeling with a very annoying bright blue light). Anyways, only the Philips 5982 had a USB input as well, so it could play from a USB drive. However, the Philips had trouble reading from my external hard drive and although it worked fine from a USB flash drive, I wanted it to work from my hard drive as well. Furthermore, the Philips can only display short file names 8.3 so that was very very annoying too.
About the Pioneer DV-400:
Pros:
Adjustable the video output: (brightness, gama, hue, contrast)
High quality video output (better than the Toshiba, Philips and LG)
YES it can play from an external hard drive. Note that the hard drive must be formatted in FAT32 file system. Windows 2k/XP has a limitation that won't allow formatting FAT32 partitions greater than 32gb. You can get around this by using any utility to format the partition.
Plays XviD/DivX just fine without skips (the Philips occasionally skips. The Toshiba was good with DivX play back. The LG was terrible)
Sturdy and well built
USB flash drives work perfectly
Cons:
Pricier than competition (at the usual price of approximately one hundred USD).
Not region free? (I think)
Notes:
Required HDMI cable to upconvert to 1080p. No player will upconvert to 1080p over component cables.

After going through a Toshiba and two Phillips DVD players I decided to try the Pioneer upscaling DVD player with my 32" Sharp Aquos 720p TV. The picture quality is fantastic, and the player has been working without a hitch for the past several months. Pioneer has always seemed a bit pricey to me, but so far the slightly higher price has been worth it. By the way, I would recommend not purchasing the Monster HDMI cables. I purchased cables from an Ohio company for about $10 and the picture quality is great. This DVD player is a lot better than I was expecting. Overall it provides an excellent picture, with punchy, accurate colors, true blacks, and very good sound. The only drawback is that its USB port will only power RAM devices (not hard drive devices) and the menu system is slow and less than enjoyable to maneuver through.Pros
-Excellent DVD playback; very good colors and true blacks; good 3:2 pulldown
-Excellent XVID/DIVX playback; digital broadcast quality playback
-Clean audio (either stereo, Dolby Digital, or DTS); I haven't tried the SACD
-The unit physically looks good; most other DVDs in this price range look cheap or cheesy
Cons
-USB input will only accept RAM devices; hard drive devices (powered or not) will not play; but you can use re-writable DVDs
-The unit's menu is very basic and painfully slow to move through
Although I haven't tested the upscaling I'm sure that it is good too. And, I want to make it clear that in spite of the cons, the player offers great value and quality for the money (I payed $80).I purchased the DV-400S in a military exchange overseas. One of the main reasons I purchased it was the USB interface. I download Divx shows and wanted the ability to watch them on my big screen as opposed to just my computer. And I must say that this DVD player exceeded my expectations. I have a 42" Sony Bravia 1080P and the upscaling of DVD's, not to mention my Divx content that is streamed from the USB stick, is exceptional. I've had only a few problems and most of those were because of the way the source files were encoded.
I should also mention the version I got was dual voltage as I'm in Europe. However, no matter where you are, the ability to throw Divx content onto a USB thumb drive (I'm using a 4g Kingston) and watch it on your TV is worth the price of this unit. I wish I had bought more as gifts as they are impossible to find here now. This Pioneer DV-400v DVD Player with HDMI capabilities is one of the best I've ever owned. I got it for $20 thinking it was just an average dvd player. Boy, was I wrong. Picture is superb when used via HDMI on my 720p Apex 32" HDTV, For some reason I am able to use the digital coaxial out put and the HDMI at the same time, most reviews I read said they couldn't. Maybe it was the surround settings I used in the home menu. Anyway great DVD Player, no need to buy another one
