I purchased this product in may 2011, before buy it I saw some bad reviews but I thought that was the people fault because an outdated firmware, but I was wrong..., even with the latest firmware to date (May 2011) this device really has a hardware/software problem by design (may be I got a broken unit, so I can't be sure), it freeze most of time so you need to keep pressed the power button in order to turn it off (I don't recommend to unplug the power because this can damage the device), also it make a lot of noise while is taking/reading/ejecting a disk, the stability problems also appear when you try to use Netflix on it, so I returned it on June 2 to get a full refund (thanks Amazon).

Final note: I have a Sharp AQUOS 46" LC46LE835U wich I really like!, this is an amazing TV and the AQUOS Pure Mode feature was the reason why I bought this BD player.

It boggles the mind how Sharp is able to sell such garbage. Where to begin? Vudu & Netflix spontaneously reboot for no reason, it locks up constantly and simply refuses to play some DVDs. Trying to play a Blu-Ray is an exercise in frustration since to get it to load you have to reset it numerous times. The pop-up menu feature seldom works. The newer the Blu-Ray release the less likely it will play.

The 1st one was sent back twice to no avail. The first time they replaced the drive in the unit. Second return they said nothing was wrong with it. When I asked for a replacement they tried to blame it on my brand new Panasonic TV (which performs wonderfully) since "it's plasma and that's old technology." Then they said it was the power cord and sent a new one. Then they said it was the power brick and sent a new one. Same issues. I finally got a replacement which works marginally better but the issues persist. I have had great success with Sharp products in the past but this is the last Sharp device I will ever buy!

I purchased this device back in January 2011. Device stopped playing DVD's 3-4 months in. Called support, yada yada yada. Had to send mine in for repairs. They repaired and sent back. 3 months later, around July/August another issue. This time it was the internal power supply which died. Machine would not power on. Sent it in and they didn't have the part and weren't getting it until November so they sent me a refirbished unit. Received the replacement, looked almost brand new to our eyes except we knew it was refirbished. At least they disclosed this information to me. Here it is Sept/October and now the device just periodically freezes up. Not while playing a DVD or watching program through it. However, if you leave the device on and switch to TV input/source and go back to the unit for DVD, netflix, pandora, vudu etc 10 minutes later, the device is frozen on the "Home" screen. Called yet again and they had me check screen saver, smart settings, etc. Firmware version, yada yada yada. I'm already a pro with this model and know it inside and out. Anyway, now I'm sending it in for a third time. I used to like Sharp consumer products at least one of my TV's still work as intended but I wouldn't recommend their DVD players. Stick to Panasonic Blu-Ray's. I will say all the service reps I talked to on the phone were very nice and accomidating. They don't make the machines, just support them. The see my frustration and put comments in their notes to reflect this. They are also recommending a retail "Brand New" unit be given to me, the customer. I even told her, I'd take a lesser model if it works correctly. So we'll see....I'll post a follow-up soon.

I bought this to replace an earlier Sharp unit (BD-HP52u). The first 52 I got didn't work properly, but Sharp promptly replaced it, and after that my only gripe was the fact that they had advertised it as Netflix-compatible. It wasn't; that feature was added via firmware about six months later.

However, once that came along, it worked fine the Netflix interface was really basic here's what's in your queue, pick what you want to watch but at least it worked.

I recently updated my home wifi to 802.11N, so I decided to buy a newer BD player. As Peewee Herman would say, BIG MISTAKE.

I will say that this unit was very easy to set up, and the Netflix interface is much better than the old units...better even than the Xbox setup. Too bad it doesn't work.

Every disc I tried to play would freeze at certain points, then reboot the player. Totally repeatable. And each one works fine in my other players. If I did a 'system reset' in the BD menu, then the disc would play fine....until I ejected it and put in something different, in which case I'd have to reset again.

Further, the Netflix functionality is really buggy too. It would often freeze, and when you attempt to leave Netflix and go back to the main menu, it would take at least 60 seconds...when it worked. Often, it just locks the unit up.

So I sent it to Sharp service, who were very polite, professional...and useless. They returned it, saying "works as designed". They even had their "engineers" test it.

So I'm returning it to Amazon. I bought it because I have a Sharp TV, which has been flawless. But it will be the last Sharp product I'm likely to ever buy.

I bought the BD-HP80U Blu -ray to sync up with my Sharp 52" Quattron 3d LED TV. I initially gave this unit 4 star in stability because of the initial set up. I have reduced this to one star as the first time I tried to play a 3D Blu ray disc the player didn't recognize the blue ray disc as a 3D. I downloaded the latest firmware from Sharp's website and the BD-HP80U still didn't recognize 3d blue ray discs. I tried three band new never been played 3d blue ray disc and the unit didn't recognize any of them as 3D blue ray. I contacted Sharp technical support. Replied with their request for the response. This is the beginning of my initial evaluation of this player. The IR remote sensor setting on the unit was set to wall. The default IR set up is suppose to be on the side of the player, but after checking the manual mine came out of the box set to the top IR sensor. There is a switch on the bottom of the unit and depending how you mount it will determine which sensor to use. On the wall the top and on the shelf the side. Then my Blu-ray kept black screening before the initial set up screen. After looking in the trouble shooting section of the manual it guided me to resetting and rebooting the unit to factory specifications. This fixed the black screen problem and I was then able to complete the setup by using the Blu-ray remote and the TV. After this I was able to configure the wireless setting to my home network. Sharp has a walk through menu in how to set up your blu-ray player to you home network. You will need to know your router's IP address, admin user ID, password, and what kind of security you have on your home network. Follow the menu screens and enter the information in the box and you shouldn't have any trouble setting this Blu-ray up to your home network. The first things I after I got my blu-ray connected to my home network was down load and install the latest firmware. I had no problems and updating the firmware will take about 3 to 5 minutes. I was able to set up a Netflix account with one month free access with Sharps website. The first movie I downloaded kept freezing up. Netflix gave me a survey and I received one day extension. I won't take a star away for this because of all the other variables that are involved streaming movies: internet speed, location of Blu-ray player, speakers, and amp, to name a few. Since the 1st day I have not had any problems down loading and streaming movies. This unit replaced my Panasonic Blu-ray player and Panasonics are some of the fastest loading Blu-ray players on the market. This Sharp Blu-ray is a little slower in loading than the Panasonic but not enough for me change my mind and not keep this Blu-ray player. Not anymore! I have decided to purchase a Panasonic 3D blue ray player to replace this Sharp Blu ray payer. I DO NOT recommend this product and if you buy it, you do so at your own risk and aggravation.
