Sony sends a plug-in disc for final cut pro 6&7. I guess the best thing is to read operation manual very carefully Please. The right setup is crucial m2t file compression. M2T, otherwise called an MPEG-2 Transport stream, is not the same thing as the standard MPEG-2 file that we create in Compressor to use in DVD Studio Pro. I was told recently that there are 14 different versions of MPEG-2, which I find strangely reassuring. Why should there be any more standardization in compressed files than there is in video formats?Fits beautifully on my HVR Z5U, set up is easy, and so is using it. Just pop out the compact flash card (I got a SanDisk 16GB), plug it into your reader (I have a multicard reader) and transfer files.By the way, files are either in M2T format or AVI, but for some reason I can't get mine to capture AVI... So I take m2t files and rough cut them on a PC using PowerDirector, then transfer them to a Mac and get into after fx or premiere.
I will soon contact Sony or Adorama support if I determine this gadget's inability to capture AVI is due to a product malfunction.

Nice to have dual recording, back up in case of client emergency, simple operation, lasts over two hours on smallest battery, a bit bulky, but hooked up to a Z1U syncs fine, records automatically on firewire, no standby mode. Won't mount on a mac, unless using FCP with plug in, M2T files are tedious and Sony should have allowed upgrade for different file types. M2T wrapper views and processes in Mpeg Streamclip, if not using FCP. Obviously no H.264, and no option for AVI output using HDV [only SD]. Therefore four stars rather than five.Read Best Reviews of Sony HVR-MRC1K Memory Recording Unit Here
The Z5U is the workhorse of our operation and the speed and convenience afforded by the MRC1 can't be overstated. The speed of transferring a DV tape vs a CF card can't be compared. Still, the MRC1 is obscenely overpriced, but what are you going to do? You pay. We use Lexar 400x 32gb and it seems to play nice with MRC1. We've heard 64gb (or higher capacity) CF cards may not work well and would like to hear from anyone using them.
