One thing you'll notice in the footage, where I shot the same things back to back with both camcorders, is that where the Flip really shines is in low light. I shot the hamster moments at night, in a room illuminated only by a lamp. Not only did the iPod nano take grainy video, it also didn't do any kind of white balancing and the indoor lightbulb added an orange tint to the clip; I'm not sure exactly how the Flip is designed to address this (whether it automatically adjusts white balance or just has a better average setting), but the footage shows that it captured light correctly both outdoors and indoors. If you compare the hamster shots with the Flip and with the nano, I think it's clear that for indoor and lowlight there's no comparison and the Flip has the nano beat hands down. The outdoor images are closer, but I think even this small video shows greater detail in the Flip video. When you blow the images up bigger there's no comparison -the Flip looks decent even on a big screen TV, the iPod nano footage looks like it was shot with, well, a toy camera. In all fairness, that's all it is at this point. (Note, by the way, that, like the Flip, the nano will only take video and doesn't take photos. You can manually add photos to the nano from your computer, but you can't use the onboard camera to capture stills.)
Another thing that bugs me a bit about the new iPod nano is the bizarre placement of the camera lens. It's nestled down in the corner of the backside below the screen -exactly where it is most natural to hold this thing if you are shooting with it. Even if you just grasp the thing at the corners, there's a tendency for some part of a finger to accidentally edge into the camera frame. In fact, I found that even after I was aware of this fact I kept doing it anyways -the way this thing fits in my hands just makes it likely I'll catch an edge of a finger in my shots unless I'm conscientious about avoiding it, and that detracts from the spontaneity this is designed to take advantage of. (I even noticed I'd done it on most of the iPod nano footage for this video comparison -and I thought about doing it over, but then decided to leave it in just to show how easily it can happen.)
So, to sum up: what you really get with the iPod nano is a toy camera, fun to have in the pocket and very cool to have just in case there's something you want to shoot, but not quite the quality we've come to expect from the handy pocket camcorders like the Flip Mino and the Creative Vado and the Kodak Zi8, that keep getting better and better. Video is a nice new feature on the Nano, but not really a radical innovation and not a game changer.
What makes the iPod Nano worth it is that in addition to video on the fly, you get to listen to music, you get an FM radio that works quite well and even tells you what song you are listening to, you get a voice recorder (a VERY nice feature, excellent for students who can listen to music on their way to class and then record a lecture), a decent quality mini speaker, a somewhat useful pedometer, decent game options for killing time. You don't get any of that with the Flip! Sure, the new iPod nano is a toy ... but it's a very cool toy.

Last year for Christmas, my wife gave me a gen4 Nano that I absolutly love. This year, I decided to return the favor and get her an ipod for Christmas. I gave it to her early so she could enjoy our Christmas cd's on it.I have to say that while my wife does like it, there are obvious issues with gen5. Fist off, the outputs on the base of the unit have been reversed so the gen5 requires it's own mount to use it on any docking station! Why can't Apple stick with one body style for the nano. So now all the included adaptors in home theater systems are obsolete once again; makes no sense what-so-ever.
The gen5 has a built in speaker that is completly useless! Sound is emitted out of the base of the unit. At best it sounds like and old time transistor radio, only without the volume! The video recoder is very awkward to use with little relivence to listing to your favorite tunes. The genius is still with us, another useless feature if you have an eclectic musical taste. The playlist feature works alot better and is much more fun.
The unit works ok and we did not find any defects with it. We did not have any of the click-wheel issues that other reviwers have commented on. For me the bottom line is that Apple has takin a good thing and cluttered it with a bunch of new features. The Ipod classic would of been a much better platform for this stuff with it's 160gb's of storage. All of these features that have been added to gen5 take up precious storage space for your rockin tunes or arias, whatever the case may be.

First off, I am not a apple or mac person, so I cannot comment on the compatibility of this product with any other apple products. I own a PC and I am pretty dang proud of it! The only reason why I bought the ipod nano was because I got to play with it in the apple store.The ipod nano finally comes with FM radio which is why I was excited to get it. All the other cheap "generic" mp3 players I bought had FM radio but did not and was not able to create playlists for me. Best of all, The FM radio on the nano can stop and rewind music! (Also I learn this on the zune as well but if you read my title I bought the nano instead). The downside is, you have to have your earphones plugged in, so you can't play the radio with (the built in) speakers. Also the speakers aren't that great, with some music it sounds fine but with others, not so great when turned all the way up. There is an equalizer but it doesn't help much. (If the zune came with speakers, I would have bought that instead no questions asked). The placement of the camera is the one thing that bugs me. My fingers are always in the way and the way I'm forced to hold it, me makes me feel like it's going to slip. Also I hate how I'm 100% sure I turned it off and when I swipe my fingers across the touch pad, it turns back on. I don't know if I'm not holding it down long enough but I'm pretty sure it's good enough.
This ipod did not come with a complete and through manual. I had to learn everything online through youtube. I did not know how to delete the videos I recored and then came to realized I had to hold the center button down in order to get a delete menu. Also I can't manually delete music on my ipod. I have to turn on my computer, open up itunes and delete it from there. Kind of annoying if you ask me.
The ipod does come with (some what) good things such as the small font, it can bigger (there's only two options) although it's not as big compared to the zune. When turn on it's side the screen goes from portrait to landscape mode, but the main menu doesn't do that. There are fun games such as solitaire and two games that deals with the movement of your ipod (a total of three games). When scrolling through your music it will scroll by letters rather than the whole list of song, if you move your finger fast enough (I don't know if the previous ipods did that but other mp3 players I owned did not do that). Also you can listen to music while you are playing a game. But the downside is you will have no control over the volume of the song until you exit the game and go back to the song (It's hard to explain but you'll get it once you buy it).
Overall I am pretty whatever with the nano. I only got it for the speakers, the making of playlists, and for the free shipping and cheapness (compared to the zune which was the next mp3 player on my list). I think I am going to keep the nano until it breaks, which sounds like sometime pretty soon since other reviewers have a lot of complains. But I say buy it if you want, if you don't like it you can always resell it in person, to a friend. Trust me, you will find people who will want it especially if you got it cheap online and is selling it for less than what the stores are selling it for.
If anyone is reading this and wondering if itunes is compatible with windows 7, It is. Itunes has fixed the 64-bit problem. You have to read and click in this "tiny" link and it will take you to a different page to download the 64-bit version. I had to go though downloading Itunes two times in order to notice that -_-. But let me warn you, Itunes will convert all music into m4a, which will not let anyone share their music if transferring/sharing to another mp3 player! This will hurt all people who do not own an ipod or zune (unless you don't care for them, then feel at ease when using itunes =]).

Q&A Time:Is the video as good as Flip or Kodak ? no. I'm mentioning this because Jobs pitched it as a Flip contender.
Is it fun to use? oh yeah!!! Flip and Kodak, step aside! This is Apple territory. If you've never touched the new nanos, you should check one out. Once you do, you can't put it down though ;)
Do I need an iron fist? No, among the sub-$200 camcorders I've tested, the iPod handles motion and shakes the best. Are you listening Kodak?
Can I shoot at night? Yes, but the videos make you wonder if you are wearing yellow glasses! White balance sucks :(
How long can I shoot video with one recharge? Less than an hour
Is the lens position a big deal? No, if you hold it exactly as shown in Apple's ads. See product details picture above. Believe me, every other way you hold, you either drop the iPod or shoot video of your fingers.
Does it taste like a candy bar? No, my 2 year old daughter says so! Its so thin, she put it in her mouth and bit it! Thanks to the excellent body, my iPod survived :)
How's the radio? You got to try it to believe it! Apple has changed how you listen to radio.
Can I wash it? Water Damage Update: I lost and found my iPod in my washer after a full wash cycle. Luckily I had a silicon cover on it. I did not see any water on the screen or anywhere else. Even shaking it didn't bring any water out. Still followed the rice idea and left mine for 4 days in a bag of rice. Turned it on and works like nothing ever happened! SO psyched! I even downloaded all the videos I'd shot before the wash. Don't give up guys, just wait longer. A week without your iPod is still better than without one forever!
As you might have guessed by now I use this like a camcorder. So I haven't explored much else and may never do.
