- Blu-ray discs, HD broadcast, and streamed/downloaded media often contain audio in the Dolby Digital Plus format. This player supports this format, with up to 7.1 channels of premium quality surround sound. It also supports DTS-HD Master Audio, which transforms your entertainment experience bringing movies, music, and gaming to life
- The integrated USB 2.0 port on the front panel allows you to view family photos, watch videos and listen to music from USB storage devices. You can also can record one or all tracks from an audio CD to a USB storage device (128/192/320 kbps). Or, if you have a HDD you can connect it to the USB port to enjoy your stored media
One of the specification mentioned was that the player also played .avi, .mpeg, .mkv, .jpg, and many other files. So I hooked up a portable drive via the USB port, I was able to access the photos and videos files in the portable drive. Same works with photos and videos files burned into a DVD-R. The only issue is, not all those video files mentioned in the product specification work. I guess due to the different codecs, the .avi files work perfectly, but .mkv files does not have any sound at all, the files I have might have different codecs, I tried several older and newer .mkv files. I didn't try to view the photos yet, but I will try it soon.
So my next step was to check if I could update the codec software of the player. This player would have been perfect if it comes with wifi connection so I could access files straight from the computer or update via BD-live, but it doesn't. In the manuals, it mentioned about updating the software via the wireless network connection or USB flash drive. So I found a 'network' option in the menu and it mentioned wireless internet option. But the player was not able to automatically detect my wifi, it asked me to choose from several different options in the menu then asked for the SSID to connect to the internet. I had to key in the SSID and password manually, but it still failed to connect. So my next option was to copy any updated software online into a USB flash drive to update the player manually. But the manual only showed how to update manually after the software is downloaded into the flash drive, there was nothing about the actual website I could go to in order to download the software. I tried to google the website, I search for iCom or Tmvel sites but I somehow could not find the website from the manufacturer to check for any updates. I am thinking I might be able to use firmware update from BD-live on this Blu-ray player, I'll have to check and see if the software match the one in BD-live and if there's a newer version software. So far, it was taking too much time to just figure out how to update this player if there's any updates available. The manuals should be more clear about that.
If you are just looking for a good multi-region blu-ray DVD player with 3D option, this player will do just fine. This Blue Ray DVD player exceeded my expectations. It not only plays all regions and their Blue rays but also has 3-D too! I highly recommend it.I have been looking for a player like this for some time. I have had it for about a month. I have played Region 1 and 2 discs with no flaws and with great upscaling. It makes my old DVDs look great. I have played only Region A Blu Ray discs. It loads faster than the same disc in my Sony BDP-350S and looks excellent. The code for switching between Blu Ray Regions was included with the player and, although I don't have any non-Region A Blu Ray discs, the instructions were spot on.
The only issue I had with this particular installation (not the fault of the BD780) is that this player is so new that Logitech does not have the commands for it in their database yet (for those of you who use Logitech's Harmony remotes). I taught my Logitech Harmony 900 most of the commands from the iCom/Tmvel remote and notified Logitech. They say they are going to update their database but, so far, it hasn't happened.
Also, the iCom/Tmvel BD780 has discrete multichannel audio outputs for connecting to receivers that can accommodate them. The sound is stunning!!
So far, I am VERY pleased with the device and the price (which has dropped $20 since I purchased mine) and have nothing but positive comments. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to find a DVD player that will play ALL their discs.
This device is also 3D and other features, but I do not have the requisite hardware to use those yet.
