- Android 4.1.2 OS, Amlogic-M6 Dual Core CPU
- Google Play Store pre-installed
- Built-in RJ45 port, support Ethernet
- Built-in Power on / off button
- Built-in AV port
So far it has received 3 firmware updates fixing various little issues.
The latest update added support for usb bluetooth adapters!
Software:
It comes stock with android 4.1. It's not rooted, but that is easily solved by applying a small update.zip file.
The user interface is smooth. The user interface is rendered at 720p, but it looks perfect on my 1080p tv.
I use this from the comfort of my couch so the larger interface is better without me having to strain.
Netflix plays well on this. I've also installed the modified version of HBO Go so I can stream using HDMI output on this little beast.
Since I use a wireless keyboard/touchpad combo(Logitech K400) I installed "Null Keyboard" from the market to get rid of the popup keyboard. I've also installed MX Player even though the stock Movieplayer application is very good, I'm a little more used to the MX Player interface.
So far it plays everything I throw at it. It handles all my VC-1, MPEG-2/M2TS, MKV, AVI, and MP4 files.
Out of the box it supports NTFS external drives too.
Hardware:
The design is unique! It actually fits perfectly around my tv stand.
The 3 usb ports in the front is a plus. I can't remember the last android device I've tested with 3 usable full size usb ports.
The wifi is strong and connects to my network at 150Mbps. I haven't had any drops at all or even reduced speed.
It's even able to connect to my neighbors router!
Built in ethernet is a huge bonus. It really opens up the options for network on this little space ship. Some of my media files are a little on the large side for wifi streaming, but with the ethernet they play like a champ!
Another plus is if you've got an older tv without HDMI you can use the RCA output and hook it up to that.
This is the ONLY android box that I've tested that actually has HDMI passthrough audio support. It's a huge plus if you have a home theater system to do the decoding.
I have to say that the Tronsmart Prometheus is worth the money. It's a really solid box, and still receiving software updates.
I wouldn't hesitate to grab another one.Pretty good Android Set top box Device. but first After I setup my network connection I updated the firmware to the latest one. I then started to sign in to my Google account & then I downloaded all the apps that I wanted, plus all of the apps that I previously paid for on my other Android devices. First off they are the best at updating there device & firmware as far as Android set top boxes go. The one thing that sucked was a lot of games had trouble working with wireless keyboards & mice for game play. The only games that worked so far were most of the lame games like Angry Birds every version & Fruit ninja & games like that, but as far as first person shooters & good zombie games, those I could not get to work with these input devices like a wireless air mouse, wireless keyboard or a wireless mouse, but all three of these input devices worked perfectly for everything else.like web surfing, you know every other thing that you can do on a wen surfing device. All other apps worked with these input devices perfect;y even wired input devices. Oh & my device did not come like the description said already rooted, I instead rooted it when I updated it to the latest firmware because the update that I installed was pre rooted, which was cool of them to do. Also this latest firmware came with some already general use apps already installed. When I ordered this box I also ordered a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-032G-AFFP-A) & to read & to write to the micro sd card that I used to update the Tronsmart Prometheus was Sandisk MicroMate Reader for SD and SDHC memory cards & it worked on my macs & my windows pc's & my Linux boxes. I also checked if this device got hot because I read on other reviews here on Amazon & elsewhere that it did get hot after I ordered it. So I immediately ordered some teeny tiny stick on heat sinks & I installed them & the device now stays cool. Here is the link here on Amazon to order the exact heat sinks that I installed 2 Pack of Highly Conductive Black Anodized Aluminum Heatsink with Thermal Self-Adhesive Tape for PC and XBOX Use 21.4 C/W & they were super easy to install at least for me. The Tronsmart Prometheus works perfectly for NetFlix & all other apps & excellent for web surfing & other online things & other stuff you do on a regular android phone. But as far as games you can install all games, but keyboards, air mouse remotes & wireless & wired mice only work on games like Angry Birds & Fruit Ninja & good games like first person shooters can not be controlled with regular input devices. Oh & still have not been able to hook up blue-tooth device also & even with the new firmware. But all in all it is a good product & I know they will keep upgrading this device for future hardware because so far so good. Enjoy!I Hoped this device would have been perfect, sadly it is not.
Here are the flaws of this device.
1) Device overheats. There are 2 versions of the device. One has a heat sink and one that does not. I have the one that did not come with one. I had to take it a part and add one.
2) It does not truly output in 1080p. It is 720p up scaled. XMBC claims 1080p, but the UI is only in 720p.
3) Upgrading this device to the new firmware to 4.2 loses bluetooth dongle support. There is no built in bluetooth. What's even more confusing is that there are two versions of firmware for the two Promethius devices out there and they are NOT compatible with each other.
4) Tronsmart's download section is confusing. It's not clear as to what firmware belongs to what version of the device.
Spending $99.00 on this thing made me wish I held out for the OUYA console. It would end up having way better support and TRUE 1080p output.
I'm stuck with this thing now so I have to make use of it somehow. I can not stress enough, AVOID this device. Hold out for the OUYA console in the coming months. You'll be glad you did.I'm currently typing this review on the Prometheus and thanks to the hubs I've got my keyboard, mouse, external hardrive, and phone hooked up all at once. Since I was only watching videos, streaming movies (I use the Crackle app from a smartphone since the one on the Play Store wouldn't support it), and playing emulated games on my old desktop media center, this unit was an inprovement: lower power consupmtion, dual core processing, and silent operation. Out of the box support for most items, though the keyboard is a bit buggy at times, full sized VOB files sometimes have playback issues, and unfortunately the Prometheus doesn't have native support for generic gamepads-even though it has Android Jelly Bean. Luckily the OS is rooted, but the joydev.ko driver still isn't working for me. It would be awesome if the Tronsmart team could add gamepad support in the next firmware update for those of us who would like to use their Prometheus as a media center/retro game console. Overall, the unit looks baddass and performs great. I'd consider purchasing the next generation Prometheus if/when it arrives to replace my other desktop.I wanted to love this but I bought it to run XBMC and it stuttered.
Otherwise it is a great step up for any Smart TV on the market today.
