For music, this player is OK at half retail price, but has some real drawbacks, especially if you are using it for audio books.

Every time the unit is switched off and then on again it begins at whatever "music" it thinks is the first track on the player. If you are listening to an audio book, you have to know where you left off and navigate back there. It also has a fade in feature at the beginning of each track. With the audio books, you miss the first few words of each track while the unit fades in. Per the manufacturer, Coby, this was at the request of their customers but they haven't given the customer a way to choose if they want this feature on or off.

The unit has a master on/off switch and a power button. The master switch seems to be intended to keep the unit from being turned on accidentally but it seems a bit redundant.

The unit has a time and date that can be set but when you turn it off, the time and date previously set is lost. There is no internal battery to maintain settings. I'm not sure why they bothered to allow you to set the time/date if it won't be retained. There is a calendar but since the unit doesn't remember the current date, it's barely useful. Again, not sure why they bothered.

The unit has to be connected to the PC to charge but it apparently doesn't change when the PC is reading it as connected. You have to use the safe disconnect routine but then leave it connected before it actually seems to charge.

2 weeks of use and the player won't charge at all. I'm returning this piece of junk!

VERY sweet.

My son runs games online. He uses the calculator to work peoples stats and then switches back to his game books. It is very easy for him to read his books on this player. I use auto read books on my Fuse but wish my fuse had all the things this baby has on it. It also has a note pad, lol.

Like the fuse you can drag many things to the correct folder but many file formats have to be converted. With the correct conversion software, which we easily google when a format does not work, you can watch movies but the fuse screen is too small another reason I wish I had this one rather than the fuse. My son would never trade with me, lol.

I got this when it was on sale for my son and was going to get another for my self and give my fuse to my grand daughter but the price went back up on this one. So I am waiting for them to put it back on sale. So maybe after Christmas thy will drop the price again. I just can't afford the price difference for a larger screen and calculator. But by all means you will not find a better Christmas purchase for the PC, Google savvy person of ANY Age group. A child will love it after you put cartoons and cute music on it. But do not give them yours, lol.

The camera works if you are out side with good day lite but DO NOT buy it for the camera you need a higher camera number. It's a shame they do not set up all cameras to change stats as if you were changing film numbers. Some film you have to be perfectly still but need little light.

I can see why people would dislike this or ANY mp3 player if they do not know how to covert files. This nor the fuse comes with good conversion software but just Google the file type you need to convert. On the fuse I had one avi fie that worked another that did not so I Googled avi user friendly, lol. I am new to windows 7 so it confuses me by not really telling me the file type each thing has the way window xp did. In windows xp I could easily tell what type file something was.

Once you get use to it you can listen to ebooks, read books, watch movies, make your grocery list and calculate your groceries purchases before you get to the line to pay without ant troubles. Like all mp3 players it can be confusing for the non technical person. It took me a few hours to figure out all the file conversions and takes my son a few mins.

It has that fuse did not:

calculator

notepad

large screen

speakers...not loud enough for me, lol

camera ...maybe ok outside in full day light

Fuse has better lock switch...easier to understand but my son does not loose his date/time like the other guy said, he lets the player turn itself off. I do not think he ever uses the off switch and his time/date was not lost when it turned itself off when the battery was low. He said it ran down while using it to direct a game but was up fast after he plugged it in for a few mins.

Both have:

Plays any file we have found from movie to ebooks after converting files...Google your format.

Cheap earphones but Fuse had the best.

Both have confusing settings when you plug into your PC to power up. Fuse never shows the number going up but when I unplug I realize it's 100%. My son said this one did the same thing.

Both you need to drag music and ebooks into a folder correctly to listen to them easily. Other wize they will be hard to play in the order you need like the guy above said. I just drag the entire folder for each ebook but only ONE ebook at a time in case the file format does not work. I also notice the number my ebook(time lapse) is on when listening to it on my PC then easily start the same book on my player by fast forward to the same time lapse spot.

Edit: To make it charge just plug it into PC and hit the button like taking a picture.

When reading a book you can go to main menu, calculator etc, and back and your book spot will NOT be lost.

You will discover things like this making use easier as you use it as ALL mp3 players have their own odd ways to do things.

Not gonna lie, the player is a little slow in response time compared to a iPod but you know what, for the price and what it can do its a great deal!

I really like my player I take everywhere I go and it has almost everything an iPod Touch does!

3 stars!

Since this was my first Mp3 player I'm still learning how to use it. I'm 65 and try to stay up to date , but my son had to show me how to download songs to it, I know how to do cd 's but thought it had to be more complicated ,but it's not. It takes great pictures which is nice because I don't own a camera. I'm sure I'll learn more as time goes on.

I bought this thing, and it's not worth buying for 3 reasons.

1). When you set the date and time, it resets whenever you power off, and you must set it again.

2). you can't play songs in shuffle mode within a folder, only ALL songs on the whole mp3 player.

3). You can't sort albums alphabetically...they appear in a random order (not even in the order you add them to the player). So if you have more than 25 or so albums, you can be searching for what you want for a loooong time...

Too bad, because otherwise, this Hip Street mp3 player seems ok.
