I wanted to be able to use my VCR with my computer monitor. Thanks to this device, I can.
My VCR transmits component-video; a single RCA cord outputs the VCR's video.
I compared the VCR's picture on my computer monitor using this device to that on my 2001 TV set (plugged in directly) by going back-and-forth with a minute of video at a time, and the picture was similar.
Now I can bring my TV set to Best Buy for recycling.
To use the device to watch a VCR with component-video-out on a computer monitor, plug in the VCR on one side of the device, and plug in the monitor on another side of the device. Press the buttons on the device.
The device needs electrical power. I plugged it into my computer's USB 2.0 port.I've bought competitor product for $12 (sold under different names, box is also blue, but not curved, just flat), which was awful image distortion, crawling lines, etc. I had to trash it, it was unusable. Then, I bought this one. At the first glance, this converter looks to be the right choice VGA image quality is great, transition speed is fast, analog video quality is also mostly great, but there are two huge cons:
1. It does not remembers output resolution, so on each power up, you have to set resolution by hand.
2. It has no choice of output frequency for analog video, so if you're going to use old CRT monitor, it will flicker wildly, since only 60hz will be supplied to it.
3. Sometimes, freeze function self-enables in each 2-3 second, if input signal is NTSC and it's quite weak (comes from wireless camera), with strong signal sources and PAL video, no problems were encountered.
Conclusion:
Product is surely overpriced, but the problem is, there's nothing available better than this one in this price range, really advanced models start at $80, and for $80, you can go and buy small LCD television with analog input! This unit provides decent image quality for video surveillance and monitoring tasks. It is not, in my opinion, videophile quality so you might be disappointed using it for a home theater application.
I used it in conjunction with a cheap media player for an art/museum installation and it worked well in that capacity. This product works as advertised. I really liked that the VGA output could still be used for the existing second monitor while the S-video was connected to an old TV at the same time. I did not notice any signal loss. The settings for brightness etc. are not saved and have to be set every time the machine is restarted.I purchased two of these converters, and neither of them would pass a composite video signal. They passed VGA (although not very well,) but they would not switch to composite video mode, and none of the front-panel buttons did anything.
