UPDATE TO REVIEW 4/4/2011

The UnitedIntegral folks must be watching their reviews pretty carefully, because today I received a refund notice from Amazonand hadn't contacted the sellers, because who wants to hassle a five-dollar purchase? This is impressive that they are paying attention.

Until today I thought all optical cables were the same, either it works or it doesn't, -I thought-.

When I placed one of these in the system to carry Dish network optical audio to my Denon 7.1 receiver, it was in order to free up a $14 Philips Toslink to connect in a CD changer.

Immediately started getting random pops out of my main, center, and surround speakers, roughly one pop every 5 to 45 seconds. I re-seated the cables and tried it again. Still popping. Different TV channels... still popping.

Put the Philips cable back in there, between the satellite and the receiver, and the pops were gone.

I haven't tried the second optical cable yet. At this point, after a week of configuring and struggle behind the equipment racks I am sick of hassling Home Theater setups. IF I discover the second one is also POS I will try to update here.

So there is in at least this case, evidence of a discernible difference between the least expensive and mid-level optical lines. If nothing else there certainly is a level of performance between working 100% and not working at all. Who knew? :-)

These are nice cables that seem to be made very well. The molded ends are large for a good grip, and look nice with a black and red two-tone color grip. It's a good, sturdy grip. The connectors seem to work fine. Being loose or tight depends on what equipment they are plugged into, which is more a matter of the receptacle, not the cable itself, and these are fine. In one thing, they snap in very snug, and in another they just click into place. But, they are always secure.

I use one of the 3-foot cables to connect the tv cable box to the surround sound system, which is a Vizio sound bar with wireless subwoofer (into which the rear channel speakers are plugged), so it's 5.1 Dolby, and it's works great. Had them for a couple days now, and can't imagine how they could fail in the future, since they work now.

The cable insulation is thick enough and has a nice rubber feel. There is no braided cover, which is just for looks on the name brand ones anyway (my opinion). Of course, elaborate covers could be useful if one anticipates chafing, but is that really an issue? Maybe if you use these to connect your gear in an Army tank, but I just use them for home tv.

I ordered them on Sunday, and they arrived in the mail USPS on Wednesday, which is very fast service (NJ). Two cost me about three fifty shippped. Crazy good deal. They are packed each in a clear bag with a label, and arrived in the mail box in a bubble-padded envelope. They are packed in a circular coil, so crimping is not a problem. they arrived in perfect condition.

Honestly, if these things said "Monster" on them, you wouldn't know the difference. If there would be any difference in performance, it seems hardly possible to tell, at least without hi-tech equipment.

In all my shopping, I could never find any cables that describe whether the conductor is glass or plastic, glass fiber being better and more expensive. Nor could I find any specs on the fiber on any products, besides marketing hype. Maybe they're all plastic now, but I gave up and just figure the plastic is good enough the way they currently produce it, and really, how many people are making this stuff? Does Monster have their own glass/plastic fiber factory? Doubt it. They all buy from the same suppliers. again, my opinion)

Mine works fine, but as they say, YMMV.

Much thicker than other optical cables I've bought on eBay, and at the same price. My home audio system only allows for one optical input, but I have both my XBox 360 and PS3 running through a splitter (which also works both ways, so either two-to-one or one-to-two) to connect both to the system. While my previous cables would only work when also run through a signal amplifier before hitting the splitter (they were too thin, and there is some signal weakening that you can see visibly confirm at the output end of the splitter), these work just fine without the amplifier.
