magicJack Plus

magicJack PlusI was in the market for a simple VoIP phone and decided to try MagicJack when the "Plus" model came out. The plus does not require a PC to operate. It is a simple device to setup. The setup process does try to up-sale you and you have to click no about a dozen times. The setup does require you to connect the device to a PC and create an account. After that, you don't need the PC. The reason it gets 1 star is that MagicJack blocks calls to many rural phone numbers. Tech support is virtually non-existent. I contacted them 3 times and NEVER got any resolution on the blocked calls. I only got empty promises. As to why the calls are blocked is a topic open for discussion. Googling the problem turned up the most likely scenario of the "Traffic Pumping" problem. The bottom line is that I do not recommend a product that only partially works and has no support.

I have had a magicJack Plus for a year now --service was okay, but now they refuse to renew for another year!! I ported my home phone number (had for 26 years) to the MJ Plus -and now they say my "account is under review," and "until the review is complete I cannot renew." When asked why a review?? -their answer is that "The 'Higher Department' reviews random customers accounts." After maybe a dozen online "chats" (there is absolutely NO customer service number to call) and being promised each time I would receive an email with instructions for renewal -absolutely nothing. When I asked Cherry and Charlin (chat personalities) about the expected emails, "You need to wait for an email notification coming from the higher department." And when asked when I can get phone service back this: "The deal is if your account is under review you can not purchase anything until the review is done." And when I asked about porting my number to another carrier -there is a $30.00 fee to release the number, which would be charged to "your credit card on file." Credit card on file? Ridiculous. If there is a credit card on file, why are they unable to run the card for a renewal? Also, there is a renewal option online on the magicJack website, but it doesn't work, and after a dozen or so times trying returns with a message that the security code is incorrect -even after I verified it each time using 3 different credit cards.

February 18: I checked with AT&T about porting my home phone number back to them. They will not port it back until "your account must be active and in good standing." So even if I paid the $30.00 port fee to magicJack, I couldn't port it back because my account isn't active.

I tried renewing again -just in case the "account review" was complete. I received only an error message for trying. Then in the subsequent query chat, I was told that by trying to renew again, and requesting another chat, it further delayed my account "review" and possibility of renewing. Definitely a scam.

So, BUYER BEWARE! Don't purchase a magicJack unless you want to buy frustration. And for sure, absolutely don't port over any phone number you care about to a magicJack -or pay the price.

I recently was unable to make a call to a certain Telephone Number in Wilmington Delaware. The Service person on their Trouble "Chat" line advised me that it was an International call and that I needed to buy an International Pre-paid calling card. I advised her that Delaware IS in the United States of America but she still insisted that it's an international call. The Recording I get when I called the number stated "to call a conference line or a platform, please visit us at mymagicjack.com". I told her it did not say anything about an International Call.

I have had the MagicJack service twice. The original and the Plus. Both times I had to use Support for each one it was a terrible experience and was never resolved.

Beware!
