First off, please just ignore the one star review someone gave. The cables as with other are made to be outside and then run straight in the house not through walls. "Inside" the wall cables are available if that is what you want to do (most do not). Search for Siamese cables (has the coax and power cables together like the ones that come with this) and start from there. Hiring an electrician with apparently no experience in installing such systems also seems a bad idea. Hey, I do not know LA but this does not require an electrician to install. A real Surv Installer would have the correct cables, probably on a roll. In fact they might even use Cat 5e CMX cables. What makes the SWANN system better over many others you will find on the Internet is a MANUAL that is actually clearly written in ENGLISH or SPANISH and not in poorly translated Chinese. All these DVRS and Cameras are made in China as about almost everything these days. With SWANN you are getting a world-wide company who took the time to make the thing understandable. This is a breeze to install just by looking at the installation photos so at least for the wiring you don't even have to read! In my research, AMAZON pretty much had the lowest price on SWANN products. This model may not be the latest anymore so look at all available SWANN products.UPDATE: DROPPED REVIEW FROM 5 to 3 based on support, In having this for awhile I came to the conclusion one of the last things I want to do in life is call their tech support. Based on my experience with them I will never buy another SWANN product or take one for free. Just getting them on the phone took days for me. No, I am done. Price-wise they are great and their manual is pretty good, but just don't have a problem. We have had this system for over a year at my business with no problems. I went back the other day to buy another one for my home and noticed a bad review. It's true that the wire that comes with it is for outdoor installation but it states that on the box and in the manual so no surprise there. The company should put it into the Amazon description. I order an extra 100' of the inside the wall cable here it is: SWANN SW332-FC1 Siamese Coaxial and Power Fire-Rated Cable-100 ft
OK here's what I like about the system. Over a year and no problems-it has good quality images from the cameras. Nice wide-angle covers a large area. I live in extreme weather conditions with hot summers-the cameras have held up good. The recorder is easy to set up and it records over the old stuff when it gets full so I don't have to worry about using up my hard drive.
I got an iPhone and didn't know how to see my cameras so I called Swann in Cali and they hooked it up for me for free.
All in all, good deal for the money-my brother paid $9GRAND for his security system and he still has to pay a monthly fee. No monthly fee and I can see everything from anywhere in the world using the internet or my phone-great!

My electrician was about to install this system in Los Angeles, and it turns out that these cables for the outdoor cameras are not Class 3 rated and cannot be installed through walls according to code in California and many other states.I sat on the phone for 2 hours waiting for tech support to answer the phone so I could ask this question. I gave up. My electrician had better luck. After being transferred through 3 countries and multiple states, he was told to call back on a weekend to speak with a head technician about how we can find another solution to installing this.
So far, none of the alternative cables we have found meet a class 3 rating, so I really don't know how this system can be sold in North America. If your house burns down because of these cables, your insurance won't cover it.
My emails to the company have been ignored.
