SanDisk SDSM-64-A10 SmartMedia 64 MB

SanDisk SDSM-64-A10 SmartMedia 64 MBThe SmartMedia Memory Cards are among the older of the portable storage technology devices. I continue to use one because my digital camera requires one. The drawbacks of the SmartMedia technology is that it is a very static format which leads to slow writing times and no variables speeds to the card. Don't curse the card for those failings, though. It is an older format. Newer devices are incorporating the more flexible Secure Digital (SD) and x-D Picture Cards. However, the SmartMedia format still holds its own in preserving the quality of the data being stored. Its design does not allow for any versions larger than the 128 MB variety, but it provides competent performance and is relatively inexpensive. That still makes the SmartMedia a viable memory source.

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SanDisk SDSM-64-A10 SmartMedia 64MB, like most 64MB cards, will store on average 71 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 53 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 32 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 25 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 20 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

I bought my digital camera 6 or 7 years ago and have had the same Sandisk Smartmedia media card for all that time. It is a 16 MB disk and held at least 170 pictures in SQ setting, a setting that let me email pictures easily because the files were relatively small. The memory card has been used again and again over the years and has just now, for some reason, bitten the dust. I'd say that's a darned good buy myself.
