Refurbished Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder - DS40 with Stereo Microphone

Refurbished Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder - DS40 with Stereo MicrophoneI've used a DS-30 for several years and loved it, and the DS-40 was just an upgrade. I use it to record dictation, group discussions, and presentations. It handles all three types very well with the included stereo mic. Transfers recordings to a Mac with no trouble: Use Flip4Mac to convert them, and edit using Audacity. Haven't yet tried creating an MP3 from the recordings.

This unit was "refurbished" but I couldn't tell it wasn't new.

The interesting question is comparing the DS-40 to my iPhone as an audio recorder.

Pros of using iPhone with the Dictamus app compared to DS-40:

-I always have it with me.

-Very easy to start recording. Can stop and restart recording, even after doing a different recording.

-Sound quality is fine with dictation and small group discussion

-Looks like I can edit right on the phone, but I haven't tried it yet.

Cons of using iPhone as recorder:

-More complicated transferring audio recordings to my laptop, where they end up in iTunes.

-Lower sound quality for large group recordings.

-If I'm using it for recording, I can't be using it for other things at the same time, such as emails or texting. However, incoming phone calls put Dictamus on hold till the call is finished.

For now, I love my DS-40, but the time could come when the iPhone replaces both it and a digital camera.

UPDATE. It worked for 1 year, then stopped. Won't turn on. No idea why. My older DS-30 still works find.
