Olympus VN-100 128MB Digital Voice Recorder - Enjoy up to 74 Hours of Digital Recording!

Olympus VN-100 128MB Digital Voice Recorder - Enjoy up to 74 Hours of Digital Recording!I was looking for an inexpensive digital recorder to use for recording interviews. I don't need to save recordings on my computer so didn't need to pay extra for that feature, and there's plenty of storage on the recorder for my needs. For this item, the price was great and the package is compact and cute to boot. Price was my prioroty, but I also wanted something relatively attractive. This device doesn't look like something from the future, but its simple and clean design will never let on how cheap it is! Later, I purchased the "Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device" (also inexpensive) so I can use my digital recorder for recording phone interviews. It's a great combo. I carry the recorder, microphone/earpiece, instructions, and a spare set of batteries in an old cell phone case and life is good.

A note: I use SP mode for all recordings. For me, LP recording mode is worthless on this device. SP mode isn't perfect either, but it's fine. And there's plenty of storage for me so using SP mode all the time isn't a problem in that regard. If your recordings on this device are crummy, hit the Mode button to be sure you're in SP mode before giving up on it.

Long story short, this little guy meets basic needs for a basic price. If you need computer connectivity, excellent recording quality, or massive storage, go for a more expensive model that offers those features.

I purchased this recorder to surreptitiously record conversations with my doctors. They speak more quickly than I listen. Now I can replay the conversations and be certain to understand their instructions and information.

This recorder works well. It has no way to connect to a PC or other recorder to make a permanent copy of the conversation, but I knew that limitation before purchasing it. That may be the reason for the low price when compared to other models.

The sound quality is adequate for my purposes.

I did fail to set the date and time function even though I carefully followed the instructions. I don't need that feature and I'm not positive it is the recorder's fault.

The recorder is about the size of a fat package of chewing gum.

The controls are easy, well marked, and intuitive.

The recorder is sensitive. When recording in my shirt pocket it picks up the sounds of the shirt fabric moving. To avoid this I wrapped the recorder in a soft eyeglass cleaning cloth. That eliminated the shirt sounds.

The microphone is on the top end so I position the red LED that shows it is recording against my chest to hide it from view while losing no audio.

For anyone who wants to record conversations for later playback, this recorder works, and the price is right.

I see that it is currently unavailable. I'm glad I purchased mine when I did.
