Sansonic FT-300A Digital To Analog TV Converter Box

Sansonic FT-300A Digital To Analog TV Converter Box
  • Allows older TVs not connected to cable or satellite to receive new digital TV (DTV) signals
  • Simple plug-in RF coaxial cable connection; composite video (yellow) and audio (red/white) outputs
  • Selectable channel 3 or 4 analog output
  • Supports channel display, closed captioning, and V-Chip parental controls
  • Coupon-eligible converter box (CECB)

It scrambles the tv signal on and off. Sometimes the picture is ok, sometimes (most of the time) it is completely scrambled and unwatchable. I have a really good antenna as well. Buy something else. This is getting returned.

The unit is small and the picture and sound quality are excellent. We wanted a conveter on a fairly new TV that we use in the kitchen and this fits the bill. We can receive all of our local channels on a rabbit ear antenna with only ocassional pixelization and drop-out (I've had a DTV for a couple of years and I think the general digital scheme, if you're using an over-the-air antenna, is marginal at best).

This unit is digital only; there's no analog pass-through. That won't matter in the future, though.

I've also noticed our unit regularly turns itself off (after several hours). I can't find anything in the manual about this other than the unit being "energy complaint". If I were using a VCR with this, I'd never know if the unit would still be operating when the VCR was set to record. Maybe our unit is defective in this regard.

This product is a waste of money. I have owned one for a few months and have not been satisfied with it performance even when it was working properly!

I purchased this DTV converter several months ago and I was able to receive a few channels from local TV stations with transmitters ca. 2 miles away with minimal problems, but stations more than 10 miles away have always been a problem to receive. Within the last week I have been unable to receive any stations! I tried a new antenna with no success. I tried going to the second story of my house with no success. I have tried many times to scan for channels with no success.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS DIGITAL CONVERTER... IT SHORTS OUT EVERY FIVE MINUTES, REBOOTS, AND THEN JUST SHUTS OFF WITH NO WARNING... THIS WAS A TOTAL RIPOFF AND I AM FURIOUS THAT I BOUGHT TWO OF THESE!!!

I BOUGHT THESE DURING THE ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERSION SCAM THAT CAUSED PERFECTLY GOOD ANALOG BROADCAST SIGNAL TO MY HOME TO BE REPLACED BY THE NEW DIGITAL CRAZE, WHICH WORKS TERRIBLY!!! I DIDN'T START TRYING THESE CONVERTERS UNTIL I STOPPED SUBSCRIBING TO CABLE -AND THEY HAVE BEEN AN ABJECT DISASTER!!!

WHOM EVER SOLD THESE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR PUTTING OUT SUCH A LOUSY GODDAMNED PRODUCT, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED THEIR USE....

AND SHAME ON AMAZON FOR NOT SCREENING THEIR PRODUCTS!!!

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT OF ANY KIND FROM AMAZON!!!!!

This box does what it's supposed to most of the time, but there are some major issues. For one, it changes the channel randomly. I can have the remote sitting on the table, not even pointing at the box, and the channel will just change randomly. The remote itself is a piece of junk (goes through 4-5 sets of batteries in the time it takes my DVD remote to go through 1 set even when I'm watching more DVDs than TV, has to be aimed just right or it doesn't work, buttons have to be pressed just right or nothing happens) and it's the only way to change channels! There are no buttons on the front of the device other than the on/off button, so if the remote gets misplaced or isn't working, you're out of luck. The box also takes forever to turn on and off. You have to press the power button and wait a few seconds to see if the light on the front is actually going to turn on/off. This wouldn't be so annoying if the remote actually worked, but since pressing the power button on the remote only works 2 out of 3 times, it can get very annoying to press the button, wait, press the button again, wait, etc. until the device actually decides to turn off. I think the "signal scrambling" issues other people are talking about have more to do with reception than the device, but this thing still isn't that great.

Handspring Visor Pro (Silver)

Handspring Visor ProThey used to say in the Apple vs IBM wars, think about the software and then pick your computer. It's the same in Palm vs CE devices.

I'm a RN so I wanted at least a decent Rx database. Now that there is the Davis Drug Guide for the palm I couldn't resist. And there are loads of apps for the palm (check out palmgear.com). The palm has a big user base so most of the plentiful apps are either very cheap or free.

Palm devices are up against the wall though, since the standard 8MB is laughable for anyone wanting more than an address and date book. I like having all my personal info but the Handspring Pro comes with 16MB letting you get down to business, so to speak. I loaded it with lots of apps: Davis Rx, ePocarates Rx, and other medical stuff like ACLS, gtt calculators, lab values... and I even threw in Froggie in case I get some free time =)

I am at 13.5MB with all the medical apps, as well as, noah's dictionary and thesaurus, and hope that I will not exhaust the remaining limit.

Color would be nice! I would not get a color Palm device though. Especially since they don't have any with >8MB. If you are going all the way (with your money) and don't mind the size, a CE device may be ideal.

The Handspring Pro is great for carrying in the front pocket of your scrubs, with all the med information you could dream of moments away. It is easy to use. Long battery life. Seems durable. Hope this helps =)

I have been an avid iPaq user for about a year now. And while WIN CE can be a bit quirky at times, lets face it, iPaq's color screen and agility between applications makes up for Microsoft's shortcomings. However, about 3 months ago, I lost the "partnership" (the connection between the iPaq and the PC) and despite countless attempts to reconnect (by myself and a hired IT consultant), we never could reconnect. (Phone calls to CPQ and MSFT were fruitless.)

Because I really needed a device to handle PIM duties, I began reading the reviews (...) for Palm and Handspring. I had heard good things about the Visor products but had yet to experience them (long ago, I owned a Palm III...less than satisfied). After much trepidation, I took the leap on the Visor Pro. The final feature selling me on the Pro was the resident memory (16 MB) and the ability to extend through add-ons.

Since I've had the Pro, I must report, first and foremost (to me at least!), I've had ZERO connection issues. Synchronization has been flawless and beautiful. Beyond that, the Pro has all the necessary functions for the manager or executive on the go plus many, many more via download shareware. Additionally, perhipheral add-ons can turn your Pro into a phone, internet browser and Pocket PC without much sweat. The losses compared to the iPaq? I must be honest, all the touting of being able to create/manipulate Excel spreadsheets or Word documents (via the iPaq) is grossly overhyped. Yes, the availability is nice but who in their right mind is going to create any document/spreadsheet on a handheld-size screen? My only complaint is the screen. With a B&W screen, one can expect issues with light, hue, and contrast. However, after getting very comfortable with a color screen, moving back to B&W/monochrome is a tough move. I'll adapt, however, as Pro's other features make this a top-notch product.

For the money, Pro is my choice. I plan to purchase one for my partner and one for each of my mid-level managers (affordability is another incredibly nice feature of Pro). I'm actually thinking of getting a Pro for each of my teenagers. What a great device to get in control of the mundane as well as important aspects of your life.

Buy Handspring Visor Pro (Silver) Now

As an avid Palm user, I got lucky to play with the Visor Pro a couple weeks back and have to say, if I were to purchase almost ANY PDA on the market today, this is the model I'd probably go with. When you consider price (and who doesn't?), expandability, accessories and a built-in memory of 16MB (SIXTEEN MEGABYTES???) there simply isn't a handheld product on the market today (that I am aware of) that can touch the Visor Pro.

I remember when my friend first purchased his original Palm about 4 years ago, and with 2MB I thought, there is NO WAY he'll ever have need for more room than that...little did I realize how useful these little guys can be. As far as organizing your life, a Palm device is almost invaluable -but they can be so much more. With a little patience, you can find free programs on the web to download that you just simply couldn't live without. Everything from maps to games...plus let's not forget the Springboard additions that truly make this PDA something special and a real honest-to-goodness cut above the rest. What really sets the Visor Pro apart from the vast (and growing) competition out there is it comes with 16MB of memory BUILT IN. No need to purchase more right off...this little guy has about TWICE what the *other* guys come with standard. Pretty impressive when you consider the price of this baby. Plus if you need more, the expansion abilities make this one of (if not THE most) versatile PDA's on the market today.

I am still sold on my little Palm M125, don't get me wrong, but for the price of just one single expansion card, I could buy the Visor Pro outright. Food for thought when you plan on making that jump to a handheld PDA that truly lives up to it's billing as an electronic device you simply cannot live without.

this is a great pda! so much memory to hold all the files and applications i downloaded from the net. the visor line and Palm OS devices have so many free/low cost software available on the internet. i was able to download approximately 30 different applications and photos on my pda and still have 10 MB room to spare. if you're looking for a pda. consider this one!!

i always wondered the usefulness of PDAs. now, i'm hooked. i use this to take notes during meetings and school work using the BugMe! program. Use Silverscreen to manage the content of the PDA. Downloaded a variety of games tetris, chess, zapit, space invaders (to name a few). manage my stocks. keep up to date with the news with AvantGo, maintain addresses of people i need to contact, calculator, scheduler for meetings, keep track of directions to whereever, expense logging, jot down ideas using IdeaPad, email, movie database, dictionary, and more!

i chose the visor pro because of its ability to use springboard modules and the large amount of memory. the large memory because i believe information is such an integral part of my day.

Want Handspring Visor Pro (Silver) Discount?

This unit is the best unit on the market for those who seek a B&W Palm device. The 16MB RAM coupled with the Springboard slot allows this unit to last for years to come. The Springboard has nearly a hundred modules available, where the others only have a handful. You don't have to pick and choose from your choice apps for only 8MB worth, you can keep them all on your device. Handspring continues to raise the bar for what a Palm device should be. Some people are concerned about the life of the Springboard, because Handspring's latest Treo does not have one plus the indicated that they would get out of the traditional PDA business (with includes the Visor brand). The fact remains as long as the Visor brands are out there, the developers will continue to make springboard add-ons. The developers make money off these add-ons, not Handspring.

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 MIDI Digital Recording Interface

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 MIDI Digital Recording Interface
  • The Audiophile 2496 PCI Audio Card from MIDIMAN provides wide range of applications for recording and playback, from stereo to home-theater
  • 24-bit 96 kHz multitrack recording
  • MIDI recording and playback
  • Digital transfers and Digital mastering
  • LP/cassette-to-CD transfers

This is TRULY an audiophile 2-channel card. I purchased it to transfer some music on vinyl to digital format from a high-end turntable, and it has done that remarkably well. Another pleasant surprise is the quality of playback on the computer the subwoofer really 'came to life'. Even my 128k i-tunes stuff sounds TOTALLY different even on my [high-end] computer speakers.

That being said, here's some tips:

1) Get & install latest drivers for your OS from the M-Audio website before doing ANYTHING else then shut down & unplug PC and install the card.

2) Feel free to ignore ALL software in the package I'm recording & playing back fine without it. Everyone should check out the free "Audacity" recording/editing package.

3) For best results, use good cables. I'm using Audioquest Mini-1 to go from card to computer speakers, and Audioquest G-Snake to go from turntable phono box to the card. These 2 cables (in 2-meter lengths) cost about the same as the card. :-(

4) Can probably co-exist with your previous sound setup just make sure you go through the various Windows Control Panel areas and define which to use for what. Same is true for most applications check the preferences to use the right card/audio system.

Also, I'd like to address some 'negative' comments I've seen here & elsewhere:

A) Comes with old manuals & drivers: TRUE but website is very complete & up-to-date they had all Windows variants covered pretty well, except maybe 64-bit Vista.

B) Takes over (removes) Windows volume controls: TRUE and good riddance! All playback apps have volume controls, plus theres the physical knob on most speakers who needs more of them interacting and complicating things?

C) No 1/8" (3.5mm) jacks: TRUE that connection is for "toys" this card has gold-plated stereo RCA connectors plus MIDI & S/PDIF connectors!

D) No surround/gaming modes: TRUE, but can co-exist with another consumer sound card or (as I'm doing) on-board audio (see my tip 4 above).

Bottom line if 2-channel stereo is your 1st priority check the website for the drivers you need and, if they have you covered, BUY THIS CARD!! :-)

Like the name suggests, the m-audio audiophile 2496 is for true audiophiles. I have had this card for years and there still is few options that are on par with this card for the same money. The audiophile has a full dynamic range of crisp audio with little distortion. I connect my sound card via digital coaxial cable to my Harman Kardon avr 240 and the sound is amazingly clear.

The one drawback to this card is it may be difficult for some to learn to use at first. However, when quality is essential go with the Audiophile 2496.

I bought my 2496 last week from a reputable mail order vendor. Installation was cumbersome. The "Driver CD" contained no 2496 drivers at all, for Windows or Mac! The manual still refers to a Macintosh installation where you "drag extensions" to the "extentions folder in the system folder." No mention is made of OSX X! Let's see, that would make the manual about 3 years old or more. Indeed, the modification date on the pdf version of the user Manual is November, 2001, yet M-Audio continues to ship this driverless Driver CD and outdated Manual with every 2496. They don't even include a slip of paper directing the purchaser to their Web site for the missing drivers.

I went to M-Audio's web site and was able to find and easily download the OSX driver (2.04) which was updated in August, 2005. After restarting I was able to get it running, however the standard Apple output volume control is not supported by the 2496 on a Mac. Actually you have NO global output volume control. Volume output is solely via application volume controls, such as the control within iTunes, or via your mixer knobs. This makes it difficult to use as a general purpose sound card.

After about two hours, the driver lost the ability to correctly play back music from iTunes, in mid song. It developed a bad stutter, apparently no longer using the correct bit/sample rate.

Technical support took 4 days, and a phone call from my vendor, to get a respones. The suggestion was to re-download the driver and reinstall it. This worked. But I found that whatever bit/sample rate I would record with in one application would become locked in for all other playback applications. For instance, if I recorded in 24/96 in Amadeus II it would later try to play back Garage Band or iTunes at 24/96 despite many attempts to reset it's control panel to 16/44.1. The only work around was to relaunch Amadeus, start a new recording at 16/44.1, quit, then relaunch Garage Band or iTunes.

On my Mac I found I also had to unplug an audio output cable from the mini-phone jack on the back of my computer to prevent a nasty electrical static that started whenever I activated the 2496.

When it works, the sound it great! A vast improvement over the built in sound. But it gets a 3 because of poor driver reliability, out of date manual, and Driver CD that contains no 2496 drivers.

It's going back to the store.

Easy set up on my PC, I boot both Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows XP, works great in both Linux and XP. Set up was easy and the sound is incredible. Drivers are available on the manufacturers website. Excellent for recording, I use Sonar Professional 6 and get great sounding takes. Just remember, for people complaining about the sound, garbage in; garbage out. If everything in your signal flow isn't capable of conveying the depth of this card you may not hear that much difference. Use nearfield monitors and good cable. Use a decent, at least sm57 quality mic if your recording.

In my opinion this is the best card in it's price range and beats a few higher end cards as well.

The first thing that should stand out to you is the user manual's setup instructions for Windows 98 users. This was probably a great soundcard back in those days, but it just doesn't measure up today.

I bought this card for it's MIDI capabilities, which it performs exceptionally well, but the card is easily overloaded by heavy onscreen graphics resulting in stutters, skips, and pops. When I'm not using this card for MIDI, I have to disable it and use the integrated soundcard that came with my system.

This is a decent card for the price if you need MIDI ports, but if you're going to use this for gaming or even watching visualizations with Windows Media Player or Winamp, you should steer clear.

For the record, my system specs are:

Dell XPS 410

Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

2.40GHz Dual Core

2 GB RAM

ARKON CMP214 Windshield and Dash Mount for Cameras with 1/4 20 Screw Thread

ARKON CMP214 Windshield and Dash Mount for Cameras with 1/4 20 Screw ThreadI really like this product. I am a horrid photographer but I often need photos to accompany my articles. This car mount for my camera has improved my photos 100%. It works on either the dash or on the window. It adheres very strongly, has incredible tilting abilities, both the hinged arm and the head itself where the camera goes. Holds the camera securely. I am impressed with the product and pleased with the price. I highly recommend this for anyone who has to take photos on the fly or just wants to take a video of a car trip.

Our family was planning a road trip, and I wanted a suction mount for my camera that I could attach to the exterior of my car to take family pictures wherever we went. (see my picture in the gallery) I didn't need anything fancy, and I didn't want to spend too much money. This suction mount was exactly what I was looking for.

The suction cup is strong and held my little point-and-shoot camera with no problem. If necessary, it could probably hold my DSLR too, but I didn't need to do this. The adjustable arm locked just fine and was easy to use. The part that attaches to the camera adjusted by friction and was handy in helping to point the camera in the right direction.

I did not mount the camera on the interior windshield, but if I did the camera would be upside down because the adjustable arm is not long enough.

I'd buy it again and would recommend this suction mount to anyone who needs a simple one.....and the price is reasonable.

Buy ARKON CMP214 Windshield and Dash Mount for Cameras with 1/4 20 Screw Thread Now

I bought a dash camera from DealExtreme some time ago, and the rubber suction on the dash mount melted on a hot day. So I bought this one to take a chance and see if it will melt during hot (90F-100F) Southern California days. We've been having 90F+ weather for 2 weeks now, and with that the windshield and inside of the car gets even hotter under the sun. This mount is still going very strong under the heat punishment. Seems like the rubber suction is made of higher quality material. I suction the mount onto the windshield directly so I'm not sure if the included adhesive pad will withstand the same heat.

Pro:

Suction doesn't melt under the hot sun (90F+ weather).

Sturdy mount. No abnormal vibration from camera footage.

The tightening knobs have not come loose after extensive use.

Con:

Doesn't give you as much flexibility on height and angle as some other dash mounts. You just have to 'settle' with a configuration that works best.

I paid a little over 6 dollars for this product so I expected something that was pretty cheap. I only wanted it so I would be able to film in my car without having to hold my camera. (something I figured I wouldn't need to be excellent quality) When it arrived I found it to be VERY sturdy and the suction cup is VERY strong. All of the hinges tighten really well and stay in the position you put it. The price and quality are excellent! Def. recommend this one!

Singel Adjustable Wall AV Component Shelf with Black Glass and Aluminum Body Shelf for DVD or blu-r

Singel Adjustable Wall AV Component Shelf with Black Glass and Aluminum Body Shelf for DVD or blu-ray,dvr,vcr, Other AV Equipment Tempered Glass and Aluminium Certified DS-1 Wall Mounted ShelfWe got this shelf to hang in our home gym to have the DVD player out of the way so it wouldn't get whacked while we are exercising. I put the shelf up high over the TV so I can actually see the underside of this shelf where I stand. The smoked glass shelf looks very stylish and is quite sturdy. There is a silver support arm underneath which isn't pictured here, but it actually looks stylish in an industrial sort of way. It doesn't wobble even if bumped. Mine is up high so it wouldn't be bumped but even if yours was down at shoulder level it would withstand a light bumping. Though it says it could be attached to a wall with some dry wall anchors, I hung mine on to a stud just to be sure.

The shelf is compact, doesn't stick out too far. It perfectly fits my compact Blu-Ray player, but if you have a standard size piece of equipment, it's going to hang over, so check the dimensions before you buy it.

This unit has cable management so you can run your cables directly into the wall if needed so things will look nice and neat.

Good shelf. Stylish. Modern. Sturdy. Good price.

Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam for HD Video Streaming, Calling, Recording - Black (960-000854)

Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam for HD Video Streaming, Calling, Recording - BlackPros:

* The case it comes in is great; very nice looking, compact, durable, and the lid doubles as a mini-tripod stand (great feature)

* Easy set up with iPods and computer (uses a quick and painless method of QR code syncing)

* Device itself is small, clean looking, simple to use, has flash, and works like it's supposed to

* Livestream works wonderfully with no problems

* For the most part, works as advertised

Cons:

* Is not Windows compatible (does not work at all with Windows)

* Does not function over Bluetooth

* Does not work (or at least I couldn't get it to work) over a public wifi (university's wifi) signal

* My iPhone 5 takes higher quality video than the camera itself

* When you have it connected to your iPhone/iPod the iPhone/iPod must remain turned on (as in, the iPod cannot go into sleep mode, meaning you cannot let the screen go dim) otherwise it cuts the signal to the camera instantly, and stops the recording

This is a very cool new kind of webcam, designed specifically for Macs, iPads and iPhones. It looks good, it comes in a handy storage case that doubles as a mini-camera mount, it has a built in lamp for illuminating what you're shooting, it records decent sound as is and allows you to add an external microphone for even better sound. One thing I like is that all it takes to access the application that controls it is to plug it in to your computer via USB. It immediately leads you through the installation process.

Of course, if you have any of those devices, you already have a webcam, so why would you need a new one? You wouldn't at least not a standard webcam designed to mount on top of the computer and record your face. But what if you wanted to switch between your face and your profile or between your face and the baby's crib, as you were Skyping with grandma? This makes it easy to switch live between the built-in webcam and another view, anywhere that's in range of the same access point you are using. It would be ideal if, for example, you were streaming an interview live, where you could put one person in charge of switching the viewpoint in front of the laptop, and another interviewee seated comfortably nearby with this recording their responses.

What got me most excited, though, was the potential to use it for stop motion. I use a stop motion program (iStopMotion) that allows me to preview shots and control a webcam from my computer. With this I can set up the camera wherever I like, untethered to my computer, and then record things one shot at a time. I actually went looking around for something like this that would work on my Mac a couple years ago and couldn't find anything like it out there. The images look great, and the process works great. The camera can either mount directly, via a magnetized swivel ball on the bottom, to the top of its carrying case, or, for even greater flexibility you can remove the lid of the case and mount that to a tripod (or gorillapod) via a standard 1/4" mounting screw. I wish, though, they'd also included a screw mount on the bottom of the camera, because that would allow for even greater flexibility -say if you wanted to mount this to a gorillapod mount and mount that to a lamp on the top of the ceiling.

I have noticed, further, that for this to work you do have to have a strong WiFi signal nearby. This doesn't seem to pick up signal as well as some other WiFi devices I've used. In certain spots of my house, and even in my office, I get a message from the Broadcaster app that the video bandwidth is insufficient and I can see heavy pixelation in the images. This is true even where I know that the bandwidth is capable of streaming HD movies from Amazon or Netflix, so I can only assume it's due to the device's own WiFi transmitter/receiver. That's the biggest weakness of the device as far as I'm concerned, and the reason why I don't give it the highest rating.

Overall, though, this is a fantastic new kind of webcam, that's well designed, and works well for video calling and for other creative uses ... if you have a strong nearby signal.

What this camera does not do is function as a security or nanny cam. It is a surprising omission in what otherwise is a very impressive wireless video camera for OSX and iOS devices. It turns off after a while.

Setup is simple. An O.R. code is generated on your setup device, in my case, a MacBook Pro. Once a connection is made to a WiFi network, you simply hold the camera about six inches from the screen and within ten seconds or so, the camera is fully operational.

The hollow base serves as a storage compartment for the device which has a builtin rechargeable battery as well as an external power connection. The base also serves as a multidirectional video mount, eliminating the need for tripods, etc.

I have accessed the stream on my MacBook Pro, my iPhone 5, and my new iPad. It also broadcasts to UStream so you can share with your friends and neighbors. A Facebook or YouTube link is provided, and uploading to those services from Apple devices is easy. iMovie is supported as well for those fans of this quirky Apple app.

Logitech positions this as a multi-angle camera to supplement the builtin in cameras on Apple devices. It promotes dual camera shots on Skype calls (and presumably on FaceTime) but unless you are a Spielberg wannabe or an aspiring adult movie star it does not seem worth the trouble.

As to the 720p resolution, it is adequate. Logitech does offer a 1080p webcam but without the wireless capacity. The wireless functionality is the key here and accompanied by a person hotspot (and a great data plan) you can practice being Steven Spielberg anywhere.

We bought this camera hoping to have found the fountain of youth, but even though video quality is great and the concept is great too, even on direct power, it resets itself after 30 minutes. For streaming this is a serious problem because when Wirecast looses the signal has to be restarted to get it back and half way through a concert or church service, that is not possible.

Logitech should develop a 920 with the possibility of using Canon EF lenses. That would be a dream come true for webcasters and a huge step for human kind.

This device works quite well in a Wi-Fi environment. The picture quality is very good when uploaded to U-Stream or to a computer for later posting. It has the benefit of not having to lug around another computer or equipment. The base it comes with is not so great. The camera falls of easily and one should not leave it unattended. I think it is a bit pricy for what you get.

Sony RDR-GX257 Recordable DVD Player with HDMI Upscaling, Black

Sony RDR-GX257 Recordable DVD Player with HDMI Upscaling, Black
  • HDMI output w/ up to 1080p upscaling for DVD/VHS
  • Line Input Recording (Non-Tuner)
  • BRAVIA Sync for Theater
  • Compatible w/ DVD-RW/-R/+RW/+R/+R DL, & DVD RAM media
  • DVD-Video/Video CD/SVCD/CD-DA (CD-R/-RW) playback

The Sony RDR-GX257 is a low-cost, tunerless DVD-Video recorder that manages good recording quality at the two faster speeds and isn't too difficult to use.

Normally, a recorder that performs its designed function well enough and with sufficient ease would, at least, deserve four stars. Unfortunately, in the case of this recorder, it earns two stars because, for the price, it lacks features that similarly priced competitive units have, such as the Toshiba D-R410 or, for a few more bucks, the Panasonic DMR-EA18K.

One feature that is lacking on the Sony is recording support for dual layer recordable discs. This problem itself may not be an issue, except there are units similarly priced that do support such media. Support for dual layer media on both -R and +R media would've added a bit more flexibility to this model that you get from the aforementioned Toshiba and Panasonic models.

Another feature that is lacking are s-video inputs, so you will never be able to record high resolution analog formats, such as S-VHS or Hi-8, to their fullest. On top of that, there are no s-video outputs. There are other players that have s-video inputs (and outputs) at the same price point, so why Sony decided to omit this from this model is baffling, especially since these inputs are included on the mentioned Toshiba and Panasonic players.

What is even more baffling was that the model that the RDR-GX257 replaced, the RDR-GX255, had these features! What in the world was Sony thinking?!

In all, because the features that were in the previous generation model did not get incorporated into the current model and that you can have more features at around the same price from someone else, it is very hard to justify this machine.

In all, I don't recommend this one.

I read a lot of the reviews on this product and did not have very high hopes but seeing as all the stores that I went to did not have a large selection of dvd recorders I had to get this model. What I found that the setup was fairly easy if you are technical savvy, if you know what I mean. Well I got it set up to my satellite receiver and I said I was going to test the recorder first, so I got on of my dvds that I use from my computer, DVD+R, which cannot be re-recorded on once it has been recorded on. And what I got was a perfect picture with no 6 second record, like a previous reviewer said, it recorded everything that I wanted it too, it was fairly simple for me. I like to read the instructions that come with the product as it makes getting to know the product a whole lot easier. I suggest if you are going to set this up to give yourself some time to read the operating instructions, because you will not have trouble with this machine. Thanks and I hope this helps.

This dvd recorder is somewhat hard to use, BUT it switches the cable box for you on a timer. The Toishiba 420 does not do that. That makes this recorder 100x more useful than the Toshiba, because I often want to record on several different channels in advance.

I have owened one of these puppies for about a year now. I ran into this PRODUCT on your site and saw the reveiws. It really does not make sense. I have to say you need to know what you are purchasing. Once you know that, then you can actually see that this product does what it's supposed to do with ease. I have no issues with it at all. I use it frequently with no issues. As for the machine itself, it plays quietly, and would suggest it to anyone onverting old VHS or Hi-8 to DVD as well as someone recording digital satellite or digital cable instead of using a DVR.

Maybe it is just my machine.. but I bought this and a pack of DVD-RWs to replace my VCR, Big mistake! I set the timer for over the Thanksgiving holiday and when I got back I had all of 5 seconds of an hour long program recorded to the disc and nothing else (I had set the timer for 3 separate hour long programs). I tried again, set the timer, being more careful to ensure I wasn't making a mistake, and again I got less than 10 seconds of an hour long program. So I tried to manually record and found that the player would stop recording after a few seconds and I'd get a Huge: Cannot Record Copy write Protected error across my screen whenever I tried to record Anything! It wouldn't even record a 30 second commercial and when it Errored when I tried to transfer Home movies from VHS to DVD I gave up! I have had it for 7 days now and needless to say I am returning this machine first thing tomorrow morning!

Aposonic A-BR18B8-C500 8-Channel H.264 Professional CCTV Surveillance Security Camera System with 5

Aposonic A-BR18B8-C500 8-Channel H.264 Professional CCTV Surveillance Security Camera System with 500GB HDD / HDMI Output, Mac ReadyI was looking for a device that is able to monitor more than one location at once. So I read through this unit's overview and found it is capable of what I was planning to do. I bought four sets of DIY kits with the same DVR, one comes with 8 cameras, the other with 5 & 16 cameras. I did spent a good few hours installing these units for my customer on each locations. I love the quality, and the flexibility what i can do on this DVR. Now, my customer is able to view both 4 office locations on a single remote screen.

As far as the video quality, those CCD cameras are giving me way better and clearer images than the old CMOS ones. Now my customer, can view all the locations, and be able to monitor their offices and stores. Customer Services is beyond my expectation, great service and support. all the technician is very knowledgable and resolve the issues quick. This system can be access over the 3G mobile phone device, which is a PLUS for my customers.

My Violin

My Violin
  • Over 160 lessons featuring basic techniques, rhythm tunes and popular songs
  • Over 70 large-format full-motion videos guide kids through playing techniques
  • Animated Fingerboard shows correct fingerings as the music plays
  • Finger Tracker listens to kids play and shows whether fingers are placed correctly
  • Creative interactive games make learning fun and exciting

I just got my copie of "My Violin" today in the mail. After playing with the program for about 3-4 hours, I have to say I LOVE! it. I am 31 years old, and I'm just now begining to learn the violin. I have had no priore contact with reading music or ever playing it before , which is why I picked this program. It was ment to be use for children 6 and up, and my only thought was, "Hey if a 6 year old can learn to play violin off this, then maybe I can as well." The program is truly simple to follow, easy to understand, mixes video and visual componates at EVERY step, and passivly teaches you how to read music and learn rythm. The instructor obviously loves teaching and is very friendly and easy to understand. It is a bit childish in its content, how ever it was designed for children! as an adult beginner i realy recomend this program not only for kids, but anyone who may have a hard time learning. The use of games to help remember the lessons and the use of video help was ingeniouse. This program gets a full set of 5 stars from me. *****

I bought the guitar version for my 6 year old son, and being the good mother that I am I got the violin version for myself to learn the violin that I received as a graduation gift for college. Cant have the boy doing "lessons" if Mom is ducking, right?

Well, I must say that I am impressed with this software. You do not need to have any background whatsoever in music, which I don't. My son is very enthusiastic, and I have practiced everyday since it arrived. My three year old daughter is now asking for a violin for her birthday.

The animated characters are not annoying at all, and the games are brief, but meaningful. The games are like pop quizes that give you a wake-up call to point out where your short-comings are so you can reveiw if neccessary.

Another feature about the software I like is that you don't need the disc to run it. My husband has gotten a guitar so that he can play with the boy, and we have the software installed on 3 different computers.

Honestly, if you don't play an instrument, but you have always wanted to, you will not be disappointed with this software.

My daughter (5 1/2) is in love with this program. Though I sit with her for lessons, she's able to easily use the program and understands all of the functions with no confusion. The combination of videos, pictures, and sound clips make this very clear and the pace is good. We did over 2 hours our very first day! Every morning, she rushes out of her room wanting to do her violin lessons--we're now looking at purchasing the piano course as well---I just wish that they had more titles!

I decided to try my hand at teaching myself violin. I read a lot of internet posts that stated that the violin was very difficult and nearly impossible to teach to yourself. This software makes all those posts absolutely false. The lessons are really easy to follow, the ability to watch a video showing how to play the lesson, than you can see exactly what stings to use and what finger placement. I have moved through the lessons and really feel myself getting better. I would highly recommend this software to anyone wanting to learn the violin. Don't be fooled by the age posted on the box. I am 25 and find this program teaches me in progressive way. One thing I would recommend to go with this is the bow right devise. It helps keep my bow on course and in the right zone. Not having an instuctor to help me means I need all the help I can get keeping the right posture and control. Just my thoughts.

Very pleased with price and quality of the item but... it doesn't come with the cables that are required to connect the blu ray player to the sound system. Or the cord (either hdmi ot YpBpR) to connect the blu ray player to the TV. So if u buy this be prepared to drop 40-80 DOLLARS on necessary cables.

Again love my system just wish it had everything in one.

This was a Christmas gift. After it was installed and we played a new movie, the speakers began to hum after 30 minutes of it being on. We turned everything off, and back on and it did it again. So we then reinstalled, and just turned the amp on, it is the amp. The amp is crappy and not worth the money. Also does not have any inputs to connect other things into it. I am very displease with this product and would not recommend it to anyone.

When I purchased this home theater system, there were few reviews available. I purchased it because I needed a new set home theatre system to watch my blu ray DVDs on and did not have much money to spend. I set this up and while I was not completely satisfied (the highest volume was still too low, slow loading time), the product was working fine. Then, however, the DVD player started turning on and off by itself as if it were possessed. Mind you, the return period window had just expired by one week when this started happening. I could not use this product at all. I then came here to write this review and have since found several new reviews complaining of similar problems.

This product is fundamentally defective and I do not recommend it. While the return period had expired, I took my chances sending it back to Amazon with the hopes of receiving a partial refund (I still had the box in which the product arrived). I was expecting to receive next to nothing but I really wanted this defective product out of my sight and out of my home. Thankfully, I returned it to Amazon.com and received a very generous partial payment, which was very close to the price I had paid for it (since I selected free shipping). I thought I would be out of luck (and out of $140 for good) but Amazon helped me tremendously. I suggest those who are disappointingly stuck with this defective product do the same. Thank you Amazon.

Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player

Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player
  • Component, S-video and composite-video output terminals work with most standard and advanced televisions
  • Elegant titanium-finish front panel; DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, and MP3 CD-R/CD-RW playback
  • Phantom Surround processor delivers surround effects from any two speakers
  • Advanced Navigation system simplifies viewing; motion zoom lets you magnify select portions of the screen during playback
  • Measures 17 x 2.75 x 9.5 inches (W x H x D)

Despite what another reviewer says, I have experienced no trouble with either playback quality or range and angle of remote control. DVDs need to be kept clean, or data loss will cause image quality degradation.

This pretty much plays everything you'd expect a DVD player to: CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, VCD, DVD, etc. It has a 1 year parts and labor warranty, which Samsung extends by 3 months if you register promptly. Considering that it is sometimes sold for [a large amount of money], I consider it an excellent value.

I love this DVD player-no complaints! My TV doesn't have a "S" video cable input, so I used the RCA video cable that was provided with the DVD player-great picture! After plugging in the video RCA cable, I ran the 2 audio RCA cables from the DVD player to my amplifier/reciever-the stereo sound this DVD player provides sounds great on an analog stereo! It's better than being in a movie theatre, though, because you can press the "I. REPLAY" button and have the movie replay the last 10 seconds just viewed (great for a football game with a bad call-you can replay the play and zoom in or change viewing angles to decide for yourself if the referee made a good call).

This DVD player also has the subtitle option for those DVDs that have subtitles on them. The player is also capable of playing any language on the DVD. I like to play movies in other languages with English subtitles active-then I can learn other languages while being entertained!

This DVD player does have digital options if your TV is digital or you have a digital receiver. It is has an "S Video" output as well as digital out (optical and coaxial for DTS sound), however you need to have these cables because Samsung only provides RCA cables.

This is a great DVD player that's pretty inexpensive. I would (and have) definitely recommend it to a friend!

I bought this DVD player to lighten the load off my PS2. I can happily say that it was very very worth it. I bought it for [money] and I got a good quality player. Has a very nice playback, and I bought component cables wich made it look great.

It also plays CDS, VCDS and MP3S

I recommend this to everyone who wants an affordible player

Want Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player Discount?

I have a high end... DVD player that I use for serious watching (read: best quality), so my review takes into account what a dvd player should do at the very best. But, when you spend [money] on something like a dvd player, you shouldn't expect the absolute best. For the money, it works fine for me and really is valuable if you don't mind some glitches. I have found that there are some skipping issues with MP3 playback, and the remote isn't going to be you're best friend (finding a programmable one that scans for dvd players would be better), and some brand new dvds skipped (but that has also happened on my [high end] model--albiet less frequently). The reason why I can't complain too much about this dvd player is its wide range of media support. My high end model only plays true vcds and dvds, but this baby here can play dvd, vcd & mp3 format that is burned onto cd-r, cd-rw dvd-r media. That feature alone is worth the price and is invaluable for someone like me who burns vcds, mp3s and the like all the time.

Another reviewer mentioned the horizontally "squeezed" look of the picture. Indeed, when first taken out of the box, the DVD player is set to display on a 16x9 set -not what most of us have these days! All one has to do to "fix" this is to go to the settings menu and set your TV type according to what you have (I used 4x3, letterbox and the picture looks just fine).

The remote control is better laid out than many that ship with similarly-priced DVD players. A/V quality is pretty standard. There are component, RCA, S-video, and both coax and optical digital audio outputs.

I lowered the point score of my review for the following reasons:

1) The remote control sensitivity is below average. It works, but it's not nearly as sensitive as most of my other equipment;

2) There's only one set of RCA A/V outputs. Granted, it has a full complement of outputs (see above), but an additional set of RCA A/V outputs would have been helpful in my particular configuration.

Panasonic HDC-SD60K SD Based Hi-Def Camcorder with 35X Intelligent Zoom (Black)

Panasonic HDC-SD60K SD Based Hi-Def Camcorder with 35X Intelligent ZoomThis is a replacement for my 10 year old Panasonic camcorder so the first thing I noticed is this thing is SMALL, but they are all pretty small compared to my old camcorder. Without going into too much detail I'll just note the things I found much better than I expected and the couple things I am a little disappointed in. I don't have experience with any other new camcorders so I can't say this one is better or worse than any of the other new models.

Pleasantly surprised:

The image stabilization feature is very very good.

The video picture quality is impressive.

The battery lasts longer than it is suppose to (manual says 50 minutes but I get double that).

The software that comes with it is certainly good enough for me and is easy to use. It allows you to arrange your clips into a video and write it to a standard DVD in standard definition, to a standard DVD in high definition or to a blu-ray disc. You can delete portions of clips, add transitions between clips, add text to a clip (first clip only) and build a menu screen.

Things that are a bit of a disappointment:

The automatic white balance isn't the greatest. Within a single lighting environment and a single shot the auto white balance will vary from a little too yellow, to a little too blue to just right. I've given up on auto white balance and now use manual white balance. Manual mode is a bit of a hassle but worth it to avoid the white balance swings the automatic setting produces.

The wind cut filter can't be turned off in auto mode. This isn't a big deal to me now that I use manual mode (because of my white balance complaint) but if I did want to use auto mode there are times you need to have the wind cut filter off or the sound will get totally messed up (like when an audience is clapping along to a song).

Low light recording is fairly noisy. It isn't horrible. I decided it is acceptable for my use but my 10 year old camcorder did better in low light.

Everything else about the camcorder is about what I expected. It's easy to use, nice zoom range, still camera mode can't compete with a real still camera but that shouldn't come as a big surprise. Overall a very nice camcorder for the money. Is it the best camcorder for the money? I have no idea, but I can say I'm happy with it and it is capable of producing very nice video with just a little effort as long a there is sufficient light.

UPDATE one month later: I've had the camcorder for over a month and have shot 10+ hours of video with it. I'm still impressed with this little camcorder. It can produce some beautiful video. I'd give it 5 stars if the white balance worked a little better. I still stand by my original comments.

One software feature I discovered and like a lot is the ability to capture a still photo from the video. I'm sure all video software has this feature but it is new to me. With the still capture feature you can get a 3.6 inch x 6.4 inch 300dpi jpg from the video. The software allows you to look at the video frame by frame so you can capture a still picture at just the right moment. This is very nice for making small snapshot photos, particularly of fast action subjects. One maddening thing about most still cameras is shutter lag (the delay from the time you push the button to the time the picture is taken). Many times great shots are missed because of that delay but by capturing still images from the video you can always get the shot at just the right moment! It's a fun feature.

UPDATE #2 2 months later: I've shot over 20 hours of video with this camcorder now and I'm still very happy with it. I purchased a sandisk 16GB card (holds about 2 hours of video) and I'm keeping an eye out for a Vw-VBK360 extra battery for use on vacations. The Vw-VBK180 battery that comes with the camera lasts at least 100 minutes of actual use yet is only suppose to last 50 minutes. I don't know why I'm getting so much time out of it! I do shut off the camera between shots (by closing the viewing door) but doesn't everybody? Seems like a natural thing to do.

I still use manual mode for white balance. I'm much happier with the results using manual white balance rather than automatic white balance. The auto white balance in my old camcorder as well as the white balance in my daughter's little Flip camcorder works fine but not in this new camcorder. It's my only real complaint.

I did a little test to compare my old camcorder with the new camcorder in low light conditions. The new camcorder produces a fairly noisy video in relatively low light but my old camcorder produces a pretty nice video under the same low light conditions. I'm not talking very dark living room, in the evening, lit with 2 floor lamps. But I found a flaw in my test! What I discovered is both camcorders produce fairly good video in STANDARD DEFINITION (note: the new camcorder only records in HD but the software provided with the camcorder allows you to convert it to standard definition). It is only in HIGH DEFINITION that the video from the new camcorder is noisy. Since my old camcorder only records in standard definition it wasn't fair for me to compare my old camcorder standard definition video with my new camcorder high definition video. So for what it's worth, my new and old camcorders produce about the same quality standard definition video in low light conditions. Maybe you have to step up to a more expensive camcorder to get low noise, high definition video.

I've got to say, even though low light standard definition video looks better than low light high definition video, once you've viewed high definition video in normal lighting conditions you'll never want to go back to standard definition ever again. The difference is remarkable!

UPDATE #3 3 months later: I continue to use this camcorder a lot and am still very happy with it. There are a few things I'd change if I could but nothing too serious. Manual focus is painful but I've only used that once. Getting to the backlight compensation mode is quite painful and I wish there was a button on the camcorder that put the camcorder in backlight mode like my old camcorder has but again, not the end of the world.

I just responded to a very good question in the COMMENTS SECTION about manually setting the white balance that I didn't mention earlier that is very important: When you manually set the white balance the setting DOES stay at whatever you set it at when you turn off the camcorder. In other words, the white balance setting you select "sticks", which is a very good thing! If I had to manually reset the white balance setting every time I shut the camcorder off I would not have kept this camcorder. Fortunately that is not the case. You can set the white balance to whatever you need and you only need to change the setting when your lighting conditions change.

UPDATE #4 4 months later: I've only used the camcorder a couple of hours this past month and don't have anything new to add. This will be my last update to my review unless I discover something noteworthy. All, in all, it's a very nice camcorder!

Addendum to update #4 On 11/5/10 I broke my camcorder. It was entirely my fault. I hit the outer edge/end of the LCD screen quite hard on a hard object and the screen is now blank. The camcorder still works but the LCD screen is history. Can't blame the camcorder though. To give you an idea of what I really think of the HDC-SD60K, I'm replacing my broken HDC-SD60K with a new HDC-SD60K. I just ordered it from Amazon (again) and was pleasantly surprised to learn the price has dropped 25% from what I paid a little over 4 months ago! It's a nice camcorder and I thought is was a good buy when I bought it 4 months ago but at it's current price it's a no-brainer!

Kudos to Amazon! I ordered another HDC-SD60K camcorder (to replace the one I broke on 11/5) on Saturday 11/6 and it was delivered Friday 11/12 and that was using the super saver free shipping option!!!

I thought I'd see if the automatic white balance works any better in my new HDC-SD60K camcorder compared to what I'd experience in my old HDC-SD60K. You never know, maybe my old one was defective or maybe Panasonic tweaked the HDC-SD60K in the past 4 months to improve the way the auto white balance works. So I shot some video in IA mode, inside and out. Nope. No different than my original HDC-SD60. The picture changes tint within a single shot when panning or zooming as the camcorder continually adjusts the automatic white balance filter based on what is in the image at any particular moment. Oh well, I've gotten use to manual mode anyway and the results are far better.

UPDATE #5 6 months later: I just purchased a Pioneer BDR-206 blu-ray burner for my computer (from Amazon of course!) and can now report the software that comes with this camcorder works nicely burning blu-ray discs. Going with blu-ray also makes life a little easier. I take quite a bit of video and I wasn't keeping up with burning DVDs of all the video I'd taken. Being able to put about 2-1/2 hours of video on a single blu-ray disc sure is a lot easier then making a bunch of HD DVDs!

Over 500 people have found my review helpful! That's great! I see I missed the boat for 3 people though. Sorry. If there is something specific you need to know you're welcome to ask me in the COMMENT section. I certainly am no expert but I'll try to answer any questions I can.

UPDATE #6 8 months later: I'm still using this camcorder a lot! A couple people have discovered a problem with this camcorder that I was unaware of. When recording in a quiet environment the noise the autofocus motor makes is clearly recorded on your video. I tested it myself with my camcorder and it is true. Maybe like me, most people video things where the sounds they record overwhelm the auto-focus motor noise. Except for the test video I made in a quiet environment to confirm the existence of this problem I have not noticed the autofocus motor noise in any of my videos but buyer beware there is a motor noise when the camcorder focuses and it does get recorded!

UPDATE #7 It's now April. I've lost count of the months! Since I mostly use this camcorder to record my daughter who is a member of a fiddle group I decided it'd be interesting to have a second camcorder on a tripod recording at a different angle than what I'm recording with the camcorder I'm handholding. So I did some experimenting with my broken camcorder, the one with the blank lcd screen (see addendum to update #4) and discovered if I connect a tv to the camcorder I can use the tv as a view screen! So I purchased a 7" portable lcd tv from Amazon for $50 and now I can splice together shots from the two camcorders making a pretty interesting video! Granted, the camcorder with the broken lcd screen is not the easiest thing to use, you have to know where to tap the blank lcd screen to set the white balance for example, but it works! Bottom line, I'm still having fun! If you search on YouTube for "Fayette Opera House" and look for the video of Orange Blossom Special you'll find one of my early attempts using two of these hdc-sd60k camcorders and splicing the video together. I just use the software that came with the camcorder. Nothing fancy and fairly easy to do. Anyway, these are nice camcorders, even though they are "last years models" now.

UPDATE #8 A little over a year. Use the camcorder at least once a week recording the fiddle group my daughter is in. I use the camcorder inside, under all kinds of lighting conditions as well as outside. I tried turning the automatic gain control off to see how that affected sound. It is suppose to give a more "natural" sound and if you know how AGC works it makes sense that it could produce better sound, not that I have complaints with the sound with AGC on except I get clipping once in a while usually when an audience is applauding. I've only tried it once and it wasn't good! Need to experiment with that some more. It's remarkable a camcorder in this price range offers this level of sound control. Other than the terrible automatic white balance (I carry a white piece of typing paper wherever I go to set the white balance manually, which works great) I'm still VERY happy with this camcorder after using it a lot for a little over a year. No regrets with this purchase!

UPDATE #9 17 months later. Still use it a lot and it's still going strong. No problems at all (other than the auto white balance, but manual works great). There have been occasions when I wish it had an external microphone jack but other than that, I have no regrets at all! Even the camcorder with the broken LCD screen works great (I use a $50 external LCD screen connected to the camcorder as the view screen) as a tripod only camcorder. Happy!

UPDATE #10 22 months later. Still works great. No problems at all. Over 200 videos on youtube of the fiddler group my daughter is in all taken with this camcorder. Only wish it had a jack for a external mic so I could get the sound directly from the soundboard but for the normal user, taking video of their family, I don't think an external mic is necessary. Still very happy!

UPDATE #11 30 months later!!! Still going strong but now I've gotten a bit fancier. I'm still using both my camcorders but now, when I'm recording the fiddle group my daughter is in I record the sound separately using a Tascam DR-07MKII and I do all my editing in Adobe Premiere Elements 10. The sound for concerts is significantly better with the Tascam and syncing the sound with the video is easy. Elements 10 is awesome! If you want to see a sample search youtube for "Fiddlers ReStrung 2012 Bowl of Bula Holiday Hometown Concert" and you'll see/hear a video using two HDC-SD60K's with sound from the DR-07MKII. Don't get me wrong, the sound recorded from the camcorder is certainly good enough for everyday use but for music a separate recorder is worth the extra effort. As far as the camcorders go, no problems at all in 2-1/2 years of heavier use than a typical person would use a camcorder. I highly recommend Premiere Elements 10 for its ease of use and features too. Very very happy!!!

I hope you found this information useful. I'd like to thank the people who took the time to write camcorder reviews when I was researching them. It's very helpful to get insights from end-users. I'm glad I bought the camcorder that I did and I'm even happier that I decided to upgrade from my standard definition camcorder to an eye-popping high definition camcorder!

I've done a pretty good amount of research on budget hi-def camcorders between $400 and $500 dollars. In my opinion, this is the best camcorder in this price range. I would highly recommend this camcorder to anyone looking to just film family gatherings, vacations, or for filming budget movies. The camcorder has an attractive design, fits in your palm, and is the perfect weight. It takes fantasic video, has a 3 second pre-record function, face tracking, good battery life, a flash & video light, average photos, and dolby digital audio recording. My only complaint is the location of the record button, it is a bit awkward. I was going to go with the Sony cx110 which has mostly the same specs, but decided on this camcorder since it has optical image stabilization (which works flawlessly) instead of an electronic stabilizer. It also has an LED video light and a flash, for photos. It supports SDXC memory cards, which can hold 64GB or more. If you prefer flash memory over using a hard drive, like me, you are better off with this base model and getting a 16/32GB SD card. I bought the 32GB Transcend SDHC card from Amazon and it works perfectly with this product.

I've had this camera for a couple of months now, and I am pleasantly surprised by it. I've never owned an HD camera, and this is my first new camera purchase in about 15 years or so. I've been using my phone camera for most pictures or borrowing my wife or daughter's digital still camera for the occasional need. This camera is many times better than my Droid phone camera mainly because of the versatility. That is, the phone camera isn't great for video, or zoom and slow motion playback or low light situations. I scrubbed Amazon for quite a while before purchasing, reading all the reviews I could find on other cameras looking in this price range down to about 1/2 the price of this camera. Although this one didn't have many reviews, and wasn't cheap, it was well-liked by those who purchased it, and now I know why. It has a bunch of advanced features which I haven't used but I will detail the ones I have used.

The camera fits in my pocket reasonably comfortably, it's slightly larger than my wallet. It's a touch wider than my hand when I hold it but comfortably fits in the palm of my hand. The controls are easy to use once you get used to them. There are 3 modes, playback, video and still. The still pictures are quite impressive. I sold a car on eBay and the pictures were huge and very crisp on my computer. They were amongst the largest pictures on eBay after I posted them, larger than most of the car dealers selling anyway. I believe it's 4.3 megapixel, but not all megapixels are created the same. I think this 4.3 quality is better than a 4 megapixel camera phone.

The video quality is exceptional. Oddly, on playback using my TV this camera seems to have better video quality than most of the HD programming I watch on Dish Network. I'm not sure how that can be possible, but it is better. I can see every hair on my daughter's head and every blade of grass when I watch a playback. During video recording, there is a box that appears around faces, apparently it's recognizing and focusing on those faces.

I've used this camera in several challenging situations and found it to be very good. I've used it low light for example, and it has a built-in light that comes on automatically. We were at a restaurant recently which was dark, and I recorded video for a few seconds and the image was somewhat dark, but the light automatically came on for both the video mode and still picture mode (flashed). The people whom you are recording might find the light annoying (in video mode as it stays on), but as the cameraman the playback image looks great you can turn off the light manually, easily.

The zoom is pretty incredible. I was recently at Brewer's baseball game, from the 1st base line I was able to zoom in on the center fielder to fill the frame, he was about 500-600 ft away from where I was sitting. Zooming out, I turned the camera back on myself and my son for a nice wide angle shot at arms length. During playback on my TV, I could even see the thin stripes on the center fielder's shirt. The stabilization (anti-shake) mode (OIS) allowed me to see the players on playback with no noticeable shaking or movement on my part. With the OIS turned off, I could not hold the camera steady enough for the long range zoom shots. You don't need a tripod to steady the camera but I've used a tripod and it works well with this camera.

The battery life is pretty good about 3 hours of use or so playback and at least an hour or more in record mode reduce. I'm thinking about getting the larger battery as although it might heavier, it would be nice to have the extra battery life and a spare battery.

I also recorded my golf swing using the high-speed record mode. Although I couldn't get the super-slow motion playback that you see on TV golf, but I was able to stop the club head fairly well for my purposes anyway. I could see my driver shaft was bending quite a bit which was a surprise. I was also able to see the club shaft angle fairly well during playback. The controls for playback in slow motion are a little clumsy but not too bad once you get used to it (press the pause button, then hold down the FF or Rewind buttons).

I plan to use the camera for recording my daughter's lacrosse games this school year. I expect from what I've seen that it will work well for that purpose as well.

The biggest complaint that I have is that still pictures have a problem with red-eye when using the flash. Even when the person isn't looking directly at the camera, the center of the eyes are red. It's an annoying problem that I can't seem to fix. Other than that I've been pretty happy with the camera's usability and quality.

Accessories:

The camera comes with a detailed user-manual, a charger, 2 connector cables, and a CD disk containing software for IBM-compatible computers. However, just plugging it into my Mac computer worked fine with without any additional software.

The two cables included: a USB cable for connecting to your computer, and cable to attach to your TV for playback. The cable for playback is one of those 6-connector types (red, green blue, video as well as yellow (video), and red/white audio). Unfortunately, it's only about 5' long. Although the video quality was quite good with the included cable, I went for the additional HDMI mini-cable as I wanted to see the quality difference which frankly is hard for me to tell the difference, but the accessory cable below is much longer (nearly 10' instead of the 5' cable that comes with the camera) therefore I recommend it.

I purchased a cable (Panasonic Mini HDMI Cable, 9.8 Ft) and a memory card (SanDisk Ultra 32GB SDHC Card (SDSDRH-032G-A11) both of which I recommend. The memory card was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but works quite well. There may be be cheaper memory cards available that work as well, not sure.

I would recommend purchasing a case, which I've yet to do, but will add that to the review once I find a good one.

I first purchased the Sony HDR-CX110, in the same price/feature class as this Panasonic. If you are considering each camera, here's what I can tell you. Be forewarned that I have only had today to play with the Panasonic, and I have only used each model in Automatic mode. I will post updates if I discover anything significant:

SONY HDR-CX110:

Wins:

+Size the Sony is much smaller, easily fitting into my cargo/tactical pants pockets;

+Image quality the Sony has much better [on fully auto mode] color and contrast;

+Both an HD and an SD camcorder Can make AVCHD or MPG, in-camera!;

+10mm Threaded Filter compatible The Sony has a manual lens cap, and a filter thread on the outside of this. While you won't be able to protect your filter with the cap, you can at least keep your lens protected;

+Manual Lens Cap User preference, but I like having fewer "automatic" moving parts to break-down.

Looses:

-Image Stabilization not strong enough for my hand held video needs I believe the IS on this model is digital only you can spend a couple hundred $ more for the CX300, which has Optical IS, you might find better IS [out of my price range];

-Artifacts I noticed several blocks in my video test. I don't know if this was from the digital image stabilization trying to figure out how to handle lake water on a windy day, or something else. I did not notice this in the Panasonic, but have only done limited testing.

Panasonic HDC-SD60:

Wins:

+Lighting Panasonic SD60 has built-in video light and still flash these will probably be of limited use, in only close quarters, but there if you need it. In preliminary testing, these both worked fairly well;

+Image Stabilization in this model is optical, and includes two modes regular, for simple hand-held video, and "active" for filming while moving. Both worked well, much better than the Sony, but will not completely eliminate camera shake.

Looses:

-Size While still quite small, this camera is large when compared to the Sony [longer and heavier]. I probably won't be carrying it in my cargo/tactical pants;

-Automatic Scene Mode It takes much too long for the camera to adjust to lighting conditions, and it cannot seem to find the right color temperature for indoor lighting I have not played with manual mode, yet, but many reviewers write that the manual mode is much better;

-No SD mode only writes AVCHD files;

-Automatic Lens Cap User preference, but this seems to be another piece to breakdown;

-No Filter Threads Can this really cost much to implement? I can't install a polarizer, UV or any other filter to enhance my video or to protect the lens.

Conclusion:

I tried the Sony first, because of the ability to change it from an HD to an SD camcorder at the push of a button Writing either AVCHD, or Standard-Def .MPG files, when appropriate. After I discovered that the Sony IS was limited in its ability, I returned the Sony for the Panasonic. The Panasonic's IS is much better, but the Sony does seem to have much better image quality [Automatic modes tested, only!].

Overall, I'd choose the Sony, but only if using a tripod most of the time. I'll keep the Panasonic for hand-held videoing.

Want Panasonic HDC-SD60K SD Based Hi-Def Camcorder with 35X Intelligent Zoom (Black) Discount?

I just tested this camcorder for a full day and was pleasantly surprised. I bought a Canon HFS100 last year and liked the video quality but was disappointed with its stabilization, wind noise, and limited optical zoom. Even though the HDC-SD60K was half the price of the Canon, I really could not tell the difference in video quality between the two cameras on my HD TV. In some respects such as color accuracy, I think the Panasonic was better. I really liked the 25X optical zoom and the excellent stabilization, even at full zoom. The wind noise cancel feature seemed to work well too. For the price, I am amazed by the video quality.

New 4 Channel Embedded Linux US411ZS D1 H.264 Network DVR With 500GB Hard Drive, Real time True Triplex with built web server for remote viewing and operation, backup and operation 4CH DVR 480FPS SATA readyI am mildly computer saavy, and this product seemed fairly easy to setup. I wasn't getting a video, and once I contacted the seller, they set me up with amazing customer service. He walked me through everything, and we realized that my cameras came unplugged. Loving the quality and the help!!!! Very satisfied!!!

I initially had a kguard dvr and camera set and the quality was pretty bad on the recorded and streaming video. I took those cameras and put them on this dvr and it was night and day. Crank up all the quality settings and bask in the glory of this thing. It's got all kinds of great configuration options and the motion masking tool is easy to use. My only complaint is that the hard drive was not well secured inside the unit. Other than that it's an incredible deal. I'm going to pair it with some even better cameras and really go nuts.

A good buy! My Grandmother's TV has only a CATV input so this combo works great without having to buy a converter. If I ever buy a widescreen plasma display for Grammy, I can use the progressive scan component inputs as well! Anyway, I just hooked up the rabbit ears to the input and the TV to the output. I was up and running in no time!

Coby TFDVD7052 7-Inch Portable Tablet DVD/CD/MP3 Player - Black

Coby TFDVD7052 7-Inch Portable Tablet DVD/CD/MP3 Player - Black
  • 7-Inch widescreen TFT LCD, DVD, DVD±R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, JPEG, and MP3 compatible
  • Anti-Skip Circuitry, Dolby Digital Decoder
  • Digital and Analog AV outputs allow for use with home theater systems, Audio/Video input jack for video games, VCRs, or other AV sources
  • Headphone jacks for private listening (x2)
  • Multiple language, subtitle, and camera angle support, Parental lock control, Car kit included

We have owned quite a few portable DVD players. Normally, we use them on trips for the children. On this last trip, we decided to splurge on these Coby tablet DVD players.

The DVD players fit into sleeves, which have cutouts for the screen and controls. Buckle straps attach the sleeves to the headrests. This is an easier process than attaching standard DVD cases to headrests. The sleeve design makes it more difficult for the children to access the DVD's in the player -a positive, if your children are very young but a negative, if you have slightly older children who would normally be able to change the DVD on their own. It's not impossible to do, just inconvenient.

The player can be controlled from buttons on the front, but it's easier to do with the included remote (which comes with batteries). Volume must be controlled via a wheel on on the side of the player.

Picture quality is very good, rich and vibrant, even when viewing from different angles.

Sound is fine at home. In the car, the sound can sometimes be drowned out by the white noise of the road and other background noise. Headphone jacks and earphones are included. Sound quality through headphones is excellent.

The back of the DVD player has a pull-out stand, in case you want to set it on the table for viewing. We tried that and it worked very well.

The DVD player has a battery so it can be played without the need for an outlet. It also comes with plugs for the wall and car outlets.

So far, so good. We are very happy with our choice and would buy these players all over again.

PROS:

+ case straps easily to headrest

+ includes remote with batteries

+ includes earphones

+ picture quality is very good

+ includes stand

+ comes with AC and DC power cords

CONS:

inconvenient to change DVD's when mounted on headrest

sound can be drowned out by the noise in the car

I bought two of these in order to entertain 3 children on an upcoming 3 hour road trip. I liked how the DVD player was able to attach to the back of our minivan's headrests and not impede the path in and out of the sliding doors. The tablet format of this model versus a standard laptop format of other models worked best for me.

I plugged the players in via the included AC cord and a DC/AC converter that I already had in the minivan. I used a power strip to allow for multiple plugs (I needed 2) and also to allow the players to plug in under the console between the two front seats. This alleviated the need for a Y-adapter for the cigarette plug and also the need to stretch the power cords all the way to the front. Advertising the cord lengths would be a great feature for each manufacturer, as I suspect that each buyer's application could be different.

The item description does not talk about playing one movie on two players (because they aren't sold as a set of DVD players, only one DVD player or a DVD player and monitor combo TFDVD7752); however, each player comes with a cord that outputs the audio and video from two mini plugs to your standard red, white, and yellow RCA plugs. The players have a switch on the side for input or output, so I bought a triple RCA coupler at Radio Shack, plugged in each cord's RCA plugs to the coupler, and can now watch one DVD on both players by switching one player to "output" and the other player to "input". These plugs are in addition to the two headphone plugs that each unit has.

Another feature that I like is that each DVD player comes with a battery (+2 hours worth). This will come in handy when traveling on a plane where there is no power outlet. Most dual players don't come with a battery, which makes them useful for only automobile applications when the automobile is on. I haven't had them long enough to know exactly how long the battery life is per charge.

The screen size of 7" is plenty large enough when sitting in the car and viewing on the headrest in front of you. The LCD screen is bright and I found the picture resolution to be very good. I didn't see any pixelation that was referred to in another review. When the earbuds (included) are plugged in, the external speakers are muted (a very parent-friendly feature). Each DVD player has 2 headphone plugs. Younger kids may require cushioned headphones instead of the included earbuds.

Overall, my purchase of two of these DVD players has been very positive.

You get what you pay for pretty much sums up how I feel about this DVD player. I purchased 2 players, 1 for each child, in June 2010. In November 2010, my 4 year old wanted to switch the movie she was watching so I hit the stop button and opened the player to remove the disc. The first sign of trouble was the disc didn't stop spinning when the player was opened like it was supposed to. Turning the power off did stop the spinning, but when I removed the disc, I noticed that the laser didn't go back to it's start position. Because of this it can't recognize new discs. When I called Coby, they recommended getting a cleaning disc. This basically turned into a waste of $30. After trying that, I called Coby back and they said there was nothing that could be done and the unit was out of the 3 month labor warranty. Even though this was a problem with a part, since they would have to install a new laser it falls under the labor portion of the warranty. The player had become a paper weight. This player was mostly used on vacations and had not had a lot of use, so there was really no reason for it to break.

In case you think this was an isolated incident, the second player broke in exactly the same way in January 2011. It is really too bad because I really liked the tablet format and it worked much better for car installation than a laptop format. The tablet format is very difficult to find in a single unit version. For some reason most are sold a dual units that are for car use only; since they don't have a battery they can't be used on an airplane and both kids have to agree on a movie. While the players were working, they were good players and played movies for at least 4 hours before the battery ran out.

It's very disappointing since the format was good and the price was quite reasonable, but after 2 deaths in 6 months of ownership I decided not to get another Coby. This is the first review I've ever written, but I felt it was necessary to provide a longer term view than most of the 5 star reviews gave. I hope they have had better luck than I did (and I still have one more Coby player that was purchased to replace the first one), but since I put more stock in the lower ranked review (and read them first) I felt it was important to provide this information.

Purchased 6/2010 on Amazon. Price was similar to the older model (TFDVD7051) so I figured I'd get the new one. Since we own several non-US DVDs, I realized the risk of getting a recent model with unknown capabilities, but Coby has a solid reputation for dependable region hacks... although it took a while to figure out the right combination for this one (all key presses done with the supplied remote):

1. Turn on the player

2. Press: Setup

3. Press: Next (>>|), Prev (|), FR(
