I am not sure if the wire or the laptop was the problem. The wire seemed in good condition but my laptop PC did not accept the USB. It detected it but said there was an error and it was defected or something. I was trying to transfer video from a jvc camcorder and i couldnt use firewire because there was no firewire port. I would not recommended this cable to use video transfers/downloads
I have Windows Vista, and I needed a cable for a Canon ZR 500. This is not a piece for Mini Dv cameras. I was not able to use it.

The name of this item is misleading. It is not USB, it is firewire, and not compatible with Windows 7. Do not buy this if you use Windows 7.
