USB Personal Logger

Review for DL-USB-LOGGER... I've had this device for a couple weeks, and am using it to record calls coming and going from my home phone line. I have it set up on my "digital phone" service (from my cable company), plugged into the same wall jack as my regular "base unit" home phone.

What does it do: It records ALL phone calls directly to a file on my computer hard drive. You do not need an additional tape recorder or other device. Just a phone line and a computer near by. A phone jack "splitter" is included so you can plug the phone in the same place (or plug the phone in at a different location in the house... either way works). As long as your computer is ON, and the recording software running... you don't have to do anything else. It will record all phone calls automatically, giving each a file name with time/date stamp. You can then playback any file as an audio recording later, copy files, email, etc. There is another version of this device that WILL work with a tape recorder (or ipod or whatever)... it has a microphone connector instead of a USB connector.

What's in the box: the module as pictured, a USB cable, an RJ-11 cord and "Y" splitter, an RJ-12 cord and "Y" splitter... and here's the first surprise: there's an actual disc with software (you don't have to go to some strange website and download anything). And the really big surprise: a real INSTRUCTION MANUAL!! Now you kids out there... if you've never heard of, say ... Gilligan's Island, then maybe you don't know what an instruction manual is. In the old days, these small booklets made of paper came with every electronic device made. Inside they had pictures and words instructions (with proper english grammar) that actually worked if you follow them, and tips for what to do in case you have any problems. Well kids... it's like going back in time and doing things the way your grampa did, because the DL-USB-LOGGER actually has a REAL instruction manual!

There were more cords and connectors than I needed. I followed the simple instructions, and had the thing installed and working in about 10 minutes. It was easier than installing a new printer. It has worked perfectly... the only odd thing: It breaks longer calls into separate files, each 60 seconds long. This could be handy... but you do drop a word or two from the conversation at each break. There may be a way to correct this in the software, but it's not really a concern for me, so I haven't looked into it.

This works well but has a technical aberration that is both annoying and holds potential for failure. The setting on the recording device does not consistently stay where it has been placed........so it requires the settings to be checked before each use. When the setting is correct, this works very well and is certainly an economical option.
